I don't remember that H got caught much, but it must be conceded that he sometimes ran himself into trouble, forcing him to dispose of the ball in a less than elegant manner. But overall I'd say that the rewards of his playing style that year vastly outweighed the costs.
Yes all true.
Maybe he should go in then I can drop...

Now now, SV, it shouldn't be too hard to find a place for him. It's not like we're trying to shoehorn Blair in there...

Very good :)

He was very good that year.
But I'm so over him, he's punted and out.
Harmony is important in the team and he's a fully charged over the top, pain.
So he's out.
Not in 2010 the year in question

Would definitely take the Adams of 2018 over Beams 2010

Would also take the Pendles of 2010 over Pendles of 2018. Reid of 2010 also gets in over Reid of 2018. Sidey of 2018 clearly over Sidey 2010
I agree. Imagine seeing Adams and Heater in the same side, agro city.

That’s true.

But I’m not sure just relying on one year overall is a better way to pick the team.

I’m sort of looking at the totality and somewhat projecting. Eg Moore hasn’t been better than Dawes that finals time. But I can’t see Dawes more than an honest toiler.

My thinking was which of our current squad would you select for the 2010 premiership side. The incumbents should be assessed based on their 2010 form.

You are probably right.
If I'd put Obrien in I'd have to take Maxwell out. And I'd prefer him overall.

I actually think we semi lucked 2010. A good side but it sort of all came together that year.
The stars aligned. We had quite a few basic types in the side, who all did the business.
Macaffer, Toovey, Wellingham, Blair, Dawes. Even Maxwell was just a player (had the organisation down back) and a darn good leader (you get crowned that with a flag. Had we lost to saints game 1 his stock would not quite be the same.)

But no Jolly no flag, in many ways Jolly and Ball made the difference. Without them and particularly Jolly, that era would have been consigned to the dust bin of history.
But we completed the job in the replay week.
Love you SV but hate that point of view. Its so typical of how the outside world views Collingwood that we shouldnt do it to ourselves. They * everything we do. Buckley was great but, you have had lots of great players but, now you won 2010 but semi lucked out

2010 we lost 1 game in the lat 16 we played. We won our 3 finals by 10, 9 and 8 goals. 2nd half of the season we comfortably beat Geel and Saints also. We dominated the 2nd half of 2010 and would have been a travesty if we lost. The only luck I saw was bad, us getting cold feet in the 2nd half of 1st GF and letting the much inferior Saints back in. However unlike many other times we steadied and did the business

Maybe only a good side but to me the 2010-11 (esp the 2nd half of the 2010 season where we dominated more than 2011) was clearly the best Collingwood side I have seen. Our best side for 80 years

Sorry for the rant but we should drop the *. We were bonefide best team in 2010 without doubt.

Love the passion.

You have no doubt articulated it better than I could have.
After the Melbourne draw, yes we were best that year.

I'm looking forward to our next successful year .... hopefully very soon

Would probably have Dunn in for N Brown. Dunn does the same shut down role but with more strings to his bow.

I'd take Presti over both of them.

B: Nick Maxwell ~ Lynden Dunn ~ Ben Johnson
HB: Heritier Lumumba ~ Ben Reid ~ Heath Shaw

M: Dale Thomas ~ Luke Ball ~ Daniel Wells
R: Brodie Grundy ~ Scott Pendlebury ~ Dane Swan

HF: Dayne Beams ~ Travis Cloke ~ Alan Didak
F: Jordan De Goey ~ Darcy Moore ~ Jamie Elliott

I/C: Adam Treloar ~ Steele Sidebottom ~ Jeremy Howe ~ Will Hoskin-Elliott

Which of the current squad would get a game in the 2010 Collingwood Premiership Side?

Here are my changes:
Out: Wellingham, Beams, Blair, Macaffer, Goldsack and Brown (Leigh)
In: Treloar, Adams, Wells, Elliott, Howe and Grundy

B: Maxwell Brown Toovey
HB: O'Brien Reid Shaw
C: Wells Swan Johnson
HF: Didak Cloke Ball
F: Elliott Dawes Sidebottom
Foll: Jolly Pendlebury Thomas
Int:Treloar Adams Howe Grundy

Given we're yet to see the 2018 season, I'll go off of 2017 form. If it was 2018, it would be nice if Moore could push Brown out and Maynard, Scharenberg and De Goey could pass by Johnson, O'Brien/Lumumba and Ball. But until they do, they haven't, and have the work to put in before they enter that conversation.

As an out and out best 22:
B: Howe Brown O'Brien/Lumumba
HB: Maxwell Reid Shaw
CEN: Wells Swan Thomas
HF: Didak Cloke Beams
F: Sidebottom Elliott Varcoe
FOLL: Grundy Pendlebury Treloar
BENCH: Adams Jolly Ball Johnson

In: Grundy Howe Elliott Varcoe Treloar Wells Adams
Out: L.Brown Toovey Macaffer Blair Dawes Wellingham Goldsack

Grundy is an obvious upgrade on Leigh Brown as a ruckman and allows Jolly greater opportunity to push forward. Jolly kicking 24 goals and taking 131 marks (32 contested) in 2010 from 26 games would have had greater opportunity forward to allow Grundy to play a higher proportion of the ruck minutes - as he has yet to develop the into much of a forward, maybe in 2018 that changes though as with Mason Cox staying, Grundy will be forced to play forward more and asked to put his aerial marking prowess and clean ground level work to greater use up front.

Adding Howe for Toovey is a substantial upgrade. Howe was in my view the Pies best in 2017 and would take even more intercept marks on this team with all the pressure coming from up the field leading to pressured and shallow forward 50m entries from the opposition. He's also a capable stopper and it wasn't until 2011 that Toovey became an elite stopper, for that to be a reason to retain Toovey over Howe.

Another major positional upgrade is Elliott over Macaffer. Elliott assuming healthy adds major offence to a front half that didn't have a whole lot of firepower. As a further marking target who also means business when the ball hits the ground, he adds more than a goal a game with Macaffer despite achieving what would be a career high 16 goals from 21 games and being a great asset for his pressure, just not in the same conversation.

Varcoe coming in for Blair as another major upgrade. Varcoe I'd use as a pressure forward, and with his forward pressure up there with what Dale Thomas was doing at that time, he would be huge from a gameplan perspective as a speed, pressure and talent upgrade by position.

Treloar I'd bring in for Dawes. The addition of Elliott up forward and with Grundy and Jolly both in the same team, I wouldn't be afraid to go in smaller, with the team winning stylistically on the basis of pressure anyway. Just adding that extra firepower, pace and ball winning through the midfield. It's an obvious talent upgrade and gives the midfield an even more decisive advantage over an others.

Wells on talent is clearly the better performer to Wellingham. He'll win more of the ball and do more damage with it, providing much improved delivery into the front half and make their life a lot easier.

Adams in for Goldsack is another on talent you just have to do. Adams has the versatility to play back as required to make the rotations work and there a whole lot of the midfielders in this squad can play forward, so the squad isn't too midfield heavy. He improved the midfield and is another when you go to war, you want him in there.
