2010 NBA Mock Draft

As I did this time last year, I've visited Draft Express and taken the liberty of copy-and-pasting what is their current 2010 NBA Mock Draft, and saved it with the intent of looking back at it before the draft next year. I'll post it here, for those interested in seeing who are currently the top prospects for 2010. Maybe keep an eye on the names that are mentioned in the coming year, and we can keep a discussion going on who we think has risen and fallen over the course of the next 12 months or so:

Some amazing names in there.

Quincy Pondexter, Willie Warren, Pat Patterson...the list goes on.

Also, I think Givony's getting carried away with internationals as usual. There's no way there'll be 49 Russians drafted.

Only Alexey Shved and Artem Zabelin are actually Russian :p

Anyway, there are a lot of relatively unknown International names thrown in there, but there's also a lot of realatively unknown International names selected in the draft every year it seems, so it's not really unusual I suppose.

Watch out for Cousins and Monroe to rise.

Wall won't move from #1 all year.

I suspect these two are also Russian Nationals. Please to be passing list to your government for further inspection.
Parakhouski is from Belarus, and is attending college in the US. Shashkov is from Ukraine, and is playing in Russia. But yes, Shashkov has represented Russia in junior tournaments, but I'm not sure on Parakhouski. I was just initially judging by places of birth.

I hope there are plenty of talented centers for the Hawks to not draft next year.

Hopefully Vandy get some Help to open it up for Ogilvy

I really like Vandy next season. They've retained their entire roster (watch out for Jeff Taylor and Jermaine Beal) and recruited John Jenkins (SG) who led the scoring for high schools in the nation and generally considered the best shooter in his class. He's a 5 star recruit and I reckon Vandy can not only make the tourney but do some damage. This is all good news for Ogilvy, he'll have another season to develop his low post scoring and overall offensive polish. If he has a good season there's no reason he can't be a lottery pick.

As far as Australians go, i think he's our only hope for '10.

Clearly the second round is just a bunch of names at the moment. But I'd expect Robbie Hummel and Matty Bouldin to rise very quickly.

I can't wait to see Ed Davis this year at UNC, he'll be an absolute star.

Interestingly no Harangody?? The Heat were really keen on him this draft but he chose to return to Notre Dame, would've been a much better pick than Dozier at #60.

I can only hope that Kings end up with the #1 pick and select John Wall. That kid is a BEAST. Size, athleticism, quickness, just overall talent. If he learns to shoot from deep he will be unstoppable.

Pairing Wall with Evans and trading Martin away for some defensive presence at C and or PF and we would be set.

Did you like the Evans pick Stiffy? I don't get it at all.
I actually didn't mind it. I would have gone Rubio but I can see why we went with Evans. The kid has a lot going for him. Great handles, great length, tough, competative, athletic, can beat people off the dribble. He had a very good freshman year. Many experts say that he was the second best player in the draft. Over the years I have learnt not to question Geoff Petrie with his drafting. He never goes for popular pick, gets canned immedietly after the draft and the proof in the pudding sees everyone else with the egg on their face. He did say that if they had the 2nd pick he would still pick Evans. In fact the Kings "war room" were shitting themselves for the 1st 15 minutes of the draft in fear that someone might pinch him or trade up to get him. I have never seen Petrie smile so much after the pick.

While I thought Rubio was a better fit, I am happy with Evans. He has a more complete game and brings some of the things that we need. Athleticism, defence, ability to beat people off the dribble and finish strongly at the basket. While he is not a pure PG he can play some point and if he doesn't work out there we can swing him to SG and trade Martin to address other needs. Petrie and Westphal are confident they got the 2nd best player in the draft and think he can end up being the best of the draft. Time will tell but in all my time following the Kings I have never seem Petrie smile that much after the draft. He was genuinely happy to get his guy.

Who's said that?

If I was a Kings supporter, I'd be very unhappy with the decision. Yes, Evans will probably be a solid player in the league, and a good scorer (he could even go close to winning ROY), but will he be a consistent winner? I doubt it.

The Kings drafted too safe, just like they did last year. To win an NBA championship, you need game-breakers and match-winners on your team. I don't think Evans will be one of these. I don't think his attitude is that of a winner. Will Thompson, who they picked in the lottery last year, be a game-breaker? No chance.

Rubio is a potential game-breaker. A player of his talent is the type of player that can help build a championship winning team. Additionally, he is a perfect fit for the Kings. They need a POINT GUARD who is unselfish and can distribute the ball to offensively-minded shooters like Martin and Hawes, not a combo guard who needs the ball in his hand and loves to score himself such as Evans.

Last year, the Kings could have taken a risk on someone like Randolph, Speights or Hickson, but went for the safe option in Thompson. He'll be a solid NBA player, but those aforementioned three players have a much better chance of being stars, and in the NBA, stars win you championships.

Sacramento may be building a playoff level team with these players, but they are not building anything close to a championship contender. Rubio was the way to go.

Proof will be in the pudding. And you are saying Jason Thompson was a safe pick?!

Are you ****ing kidding me?! Most of the experts had him pegged as a late first round pick. Everyone called it a reach after the draft and everyone ended up with an egg on their face. How the **** is it a safe pick when someone picks a guy at 12 that no one really had going in the lottery. A college senior who played for a small school and was not on the radar of majority of the teams in the lottery. The only other team that was picking in the lottery and had strong interest in Thompson was Golden State. Many had him going in the 20-30 range and all of a sudden he is a safe pick?!

Give me a ****ing break!

As for Evans, I guess time will tell but as a rookie he has achieved as much as many of the franchise players in the league.

Also on Rubio, lets get one thing straight I am a HUGE fan and I think he will be a great player but franchise player he is not and never will be. He is a great ball handler and a great passer. Genuine leader, creative player. He is not quick enough to keep the quick NBA point guards in front of him. He is not great at finishing at the basket and is an average shooter. Even though he has improved his accuracy with his shot, its a painfully slow release. With all those flaws he will not be a franchise guy. An all-star type of player, yes! A franchise player?! No! I don't think there is one genuine franchise player in this draft. For me franchise player play both sides of the ball, has more than 1 or 2 strings to his bow.

While Rubio would have been a much better fit for us, he was never going to be a franchise player. A great little player no doubt but franchise player?! Give me a break!

In theory if they were born before July 1990 they were born in Russia ;)

A 'safe' pick doesn't necessarily mean a player is picked at the spot they are projected to be picked. A 'safe' pick is when a team drafts a player who's been very solid at college level, will probably be solid in the NBA, but his potential ceiling is much lower than other players still left on the board, who have perhaps been less productive in college.

Thompson is one of those players. He's solid, but he's probably never going to be a superstar. Someone like Randolph, who was still on the board, is not as solid as Thompson but he is more likely to be a star in this league and has the potential to be a much better player tha Thompson.

I'd also say Evans was a 'safer' pick than Rubio in this draft. He's less likely to be a bust, but also less likely to be a star.
