If that is true, i say we go at Roughead really hard give Hawthorn Jacobs and 1st round draft pick.

Agreed Harks, we would have to give up a lot to lure a young forward who has already kicked 80 goals in a season. Would love to have him but can't see it happening.

Pavlich by the sounds of it is a good possibility, would love us to try and get Travis Boak and even have a look at Lachlan Hanson from the Roos.

The reasons players leave clubs are:

1. Lack of success - want to win a flag (e.g. Buckley )
2. Lack of opportunity / falling out with coach (Aker)
3. Homesickness (Judd)
4. Money (Wanganeen)
5. Sacked (Fev )

For mine, money is probably the lowest on the list, and if Roughy does want to leave for money next year then he will be playing for GC17, not us. None of the other factors apply to Roughy.

Secondly, Hawks will want no less than two top 10 picks.
Our first round pick will be in the late teens somwhere due to GC17's concessions, and sorry......but Jacobs as much as we love him, doesn't fill the bill for Roughy. Hampson or Warnock maybe, but they are going nowhere.

Sorry, it just won't happen.

Thirdly, we have Henderson. Right now as a (coming into his) third year player, he isn't as good as Roughy.......but he is better than Roughy was after his second year. This kid has everything about him that says he'll do a bloody good job for us, we just need to be a little patient, as Hawks fans were with Roughy for 3 years or so.

Keep our first round pick and let Hendo do the job.

I'd also suggest that we have very little room left this year as I suspect some "front loading" of re-negotiated contracts would have occurred over the summer to free up room over the next couple of years.

Keep in mind people that Buddy is also out of contract as well. Whilst I think we won't get either of the Hawk forwards, it certainly doesn't mean that we won't throw a massive deal at both of them.

Also think that because we have loaded up on kids over the past few seasons, wouldn't mind thinking we may take a slightly different approach come trade week, and we might we willing to trade away our first selection again, like we did for Brock McLean last year.

Agree with Blue Bear on this.
Just giving up a first round and Jacobs won't cut it with Hawthorn particularly if our first round pick would be around pick 20 (with GC17 having first 5 picks and every a heap of other first round picks). Would love to have him at the Blues but we'd have to give up a lot more than that

Even though we have room in our salary cap we need to remember that the likes of Murphy, Gibbs, Kruezer etc... will be in the elite by the time their next contracts come around so they will be wanting (and deservedly so) more money, so we will need this extra salary cap room to cover their increased salaries in the next couple of years.

On the Pavalich issue - he is an obvious A Grade player but by next year he'll be 28-29 (not sure his exact age) and be past his prime. I wouldn't like to be using any salary cap room on a player that may only last 2-3 years, prefer to go after a big name who's 23-24 years old, where you can still get about 8 years out of them - someone like Mitch Clarke for example

I like your thinking S23 but I cannot realistically see Hawks even thinking about trading Roughead given all the bs about the Campbell Brown offer to Port.

Also given all the GC17 draft picks and the introduction of a new West Sydney team, I don't think Carlton's first round draft pick will be all that enticing if we finish in the top 8.

Wayne Hughes will certainly have to earn his money over the next couple of trade periods, given the draft concessions to the new teams.

He has struggled to have an impact and had a few injuries to date. This is normal for a KPP player his age, settling into a position has been an issue for him.

He has been played down back and up forward but looks settled as a defender. I expect him to line up at CHB this season and hold that position. He is not what we are looking for and North will not trade him after putting the time into his development.

Henderson will deliver over the next few years, and we also have either Austin or Waite as surplus down back........not sure how many more "talls" people think we need up front.

Sure, having a "gun" forward like Roughy would be great, but history tends to suggest players don't often move for money alone, and again, if this was going to be the case GC would be able to trump whatever we put in front of him IMO.

Agree that it is unlikely even from a club perspective.

If Hawks give up Roughie they have no immediate quality tall cover for Buddy - the exact reason they spent 4 picks on Dowler, Buddy, Roughie and Thorpe. Why would they undo 3 years of tall drafting which gives then cover.

If they did trade for Hampson, Betts and a 1st rnd pick they would then need to go and find a KPP which is VERY hard (harder than picking up a useful ruck).

Very very highly rated junior, who hasn't developed as rapidly as others would have expected, including myself. In fact, the year he was drafted, there was some feeling that he was the no.1 player in that draft pool, which included Gibbs.

As for Setanta, I love the guy but CHF he is not.
He'll show us glimpses and have the odd good game but for a key post he is not the answer.

That's funny because this time last year I was suggesting he be tried forward and many suggested he couldn't do it......yet several games this year he has proved that he can.

CHF demands you to have a good game even when you are having a bad one, and The Irishman could not give us that.

Not really sure what this actually means..........but I'm equally unsure about how you can make that call. From the Saints game for several weeks he was consistent, and until Fev rammed him vs Dons he was our best forward option, clunking several contestes marks around CHF. The Freo game at Subi showed he can also play deeper as a leading forward.

For the record I don't actually believe we need a "true CHF" the way we play. Dual forwards along the Brown/Bradshaw, Riewoldt/Kosi, Roughy/Buddy lines will do fine. None of these play the traditional model of FF and CHF. I think Henderson and Setanta are also suited to this.
Both can play deep, both can push up the ground.

I won't continue a debate about Setanta because its off topic, but I think he (if he can stay fit) became a good senior footballer last year and took a big step, and should do so again this year.......I think the Aussie rules penny has dropped for Setanta.
Will he be a superstar forward? No, but he will be more than serviceable and provide one of a number of forward options that will be hard to match up on..........as for holding down CHF.......IMHO the position has been extinct for 10 years.

Much as I like to see the Colliwobbles get rubbished, I can't agree with this. Thomas is a little pansy but he can play alright. He just needs so sacrifice a fair chunk of Ego for some Consistency

NOt really. Starts a lot out of the goal square. Does tend to push up the ground a bit as well, but I think the days of labelling FF and CHF's and actually having guys play those positions as we knew them are long gone.

My preference would be to develop Henderson/Kruezer as our main dual forwards. Both are only 20 y.o. and in
2/3 years this combination would be awesome. Krueze has already kicked 26 goals from 43 games, and thats playing mainly in the ruck and resting in the fwd line - he is also great with 2nd and 3rd efforts. Something we've lacked with our KPF over the last 10 yrs on a consistent basis.

Grant it we will need Warnock and Hampson/Jacobs to carry the ruck duties, and we might lose some of Krueze's ruck roving efforts in the middle. But I reckon in 2/3 yrs time a Henderson/Kruezer combo up fwd would be the envy of the comp.
