Of course there will be disappointment and some harsh truths discovered about some of our younger players, but I would rather go through the weeding out process in an attempt to build a premiership side rather than cling to aging stars trying to put together a side capable of making the finals, but not ever really having the squad to challenge for a premiership.

Surely after the grand final and seeing how much experience Collingwood had sitting up in the stands that no-one could deny the need to develop younger players and develop your list is more paramount than ever before.

Couldn't agree more...need to blood the youngsters as much as possible...Collingwood's young guns were the prime reason they went onto win the flag. The older Saints players couldn't go with them a second time....

I will give any Mckernan doubters a hot tip. He IS going to make it.... I know he didnt play any games this year but the guy is a gun. He is stuck at South getting pumped each week. His game vs the Eagles where he got the 3 votes and kicked 4 in the last quarter to win the game sold me for life. He is a kid who man-handles men in the tough SANFL comp. Big guys take longer, especially in shit teams. I might change my user name to Freddy Mckernan!

Thirded.

Those I would consider under threat would be: Cook, Armstrong, Petrenko, Schmidt, Sellar, Symes, Reilly, Douglas (in the longer term), McKernan - and yes, possibly VB even if he IS the Captain of the team. That said, I think there's a clear gap between the first 5 named and the rest of the group. I think the first 5 will all be fighting for their survival beyond 2011.

Oh man. If you include Dougie in your list you may as well include every other player we have. It would take a pretty massive form turnaround for a very long period for him to be dispensed with.
There's improvement left in Dougie and it bothers me that people are still pretending that he's hit his ceiling. He just won our B&F as a 23 year old, has the versatility to play as a small forward if needed, has had no discipline issues, no work ethic issues, no injury issues, clearly loves the club, has plenty of pace and agility (more and more important these days). I think it's unlikely that he'll get significantly worse, and I don't agree that he won't get better. Even on his form this year, our future side would have to be pretty ****ing amazing for him to be out of the first 22 - let alone cut.
There are a lot of players you haven't listed who are under more of a cloud than Dougie - long term and short term.

the crows should send SMACK to Centrals

with Griff moving on and Schell retiring, SMACK could play a Ruck / Forward role in a good side, with good structure and good players around him :D

I predict a lot of broken hearts and angry words directed at the football department for "failing to properly develop youth" on this board over the next two seasons.
If we're winning, why would anyone bother complaining?

If we're losing, then any predicted 'angry words' are right.

Over the next two seasons the performance of our football department will be there for everyone to see. They can no longer rely on the inherited guns of yesteryear.

Good or bad, our football department will either get all the glory or all the blame. As they should.

Good PS avg injuries no more excuses. Just hope there are no "tweaks" around round 5-8.

Not great for the SANFL comp, but undoubtedly the best thing for McKernan.
