interesting jolly got dropped?

no suprise swannys not in there, he doesnt seem like he has much leadership qualitys.

bit disappointed pendles isnt captain.

Heath Shaw being named will be the headline here, although most of us saw that coming anyway.

Interesting that Swan has been demoted, Bucks' decision or maybe Swanny just wanted to concentrate on his footy.

Anyway, apart from Swan, that's damn near our best group of players, and easily our best leaders.:thumbsu:

I don't think that having Shaw in the leadership group is a great idea.

I think more time should have passed since last year's big and costly error of judgement before he should have been considered.

I'm a big believer in redemption, but I think leadership candidates should at least have had their previous season scandal free.

All leadership roles are decided by the players. So either swan didn't nominate again of he got outvoted. Nothing to do with the admin.

Does the Admin have to Okay it 1st?

interesting view, but in that case we'd be looking for a new captain as well...

I initially thought the same thing, but seeing as the players vote on it i'm happy with him being included.

Shaw has had leadership qualities for years, it's been his off feild dramas that have held him back so long (some perople were throwing his name up for captaincy when Burns retired). His $5 bet was stupid but his last real stuff up in terms of leadersip was the car crash and not telling the truth. Since then he's been fine IMO.

I think it's good Jolly & Swan have chosen not to nominate for leadership roles as well. Like others have said, Swan doesn't ooze leadership qualities and Jolly is probably better off focussing on himself this year.

It is fantastic to see the club allow itself to be open to criticism and allow a player with a few off field issues to be the on field leader he should be. Heath Shaw is a great choice for the leadership group. I thought his last issue would have prevented an appointment so I am glad we made a football decision for the football side rather than a marketing decision for the hystertics.

I am looking forward to hearing Patrick Smith call it the end of the world. Also looking forward to Caro's comments about the odd and risky decision. She'll hedge her bets a little waiting for an I told you so moment. The club's I told you so moment will come on as Norm is presented to Heath....get on early.

It is a view worthy of debate and I am sure there was a fair bit internally. I hope he was told flat out that he may very well have cost Collingwood a premiership and he owes the club big time. I also hope it is taken into account at his next contract negotiation. We shouldn't pussyfoot around it. I personally don't care that he had a bet as such but the rules are the rules and his suspension was hardly the first dumb off field act. He should be accountable.

Shaw is a bit dumb IMO but he is a Shaw and he has the footy smarts of his father and uncle. He is an on field leader. He will do well in an on field leadership role. The role may even make him a bit more thoughtful off field - not that I'm taking bets on that.

I'm not. The captaincy isn't for sale. It is an honour and he'll probably earn it but I wouldn't want it to seem that he got it to stop him leaving. Also Maxwell is the best captain at the club. While he plays well enough to hold his spot he should keep it. If he struggles on field then it will be time for a change. Pendlebury will probably take over then. I'm not convinced he's the next best but I am not on the inside.

Exactly what I've been saying all along.

Scott Pendlebury can not be the captain of this football club until he commits to it long term.

We never have, and never will offer someone the captaincy just to keep them at the club, that's for pissy little football clubs with no history and respect for the captaincy.

If Pendles signs a long term deal later this year, then yes, I would be expecting Maxwell to hand over the captaincy voluntarily after this season.

I dunno, he screams leadership to me

;)

Seriously though, from an outsiders perpsective, one thing I reckon is good about Shaw is his consitency and ability to stand up in the really big games. On field, I think he is one of your better leaders.

HAHAHA.

I was drinking a Big M... It is everywhere now! The fact that it's the first post on the 2nd page makes it so unexpected! :D:thumbsu:

Very good group. Great persistence and consistency shown by daisy, trav and heater to be rewarded by their teammates.

We have some quality leaders at the football club.

I wouldn't have thought having Shaw in the leadership group would change anything on-field. He is already an on-field leader that marshals the backline, and he always will be. It's hardly as if he's going to talk more or yell louder.

And he is playing alongside the captain (assuming players keep their current roles and the captain is fit).

I think where it'll make a diffence is off-field when the leadership group meet to handle internal disciplinary issues and that kind of stuff. Does he have the maturity for that?

But then again, it is only a junior leadership role so maybe putting him in a forum of responsible types might be good for him?

Is it organised so that each of the junior leadership positions comes from the back, mid and forwards?

If that's the case, it's easy to see why Shaw got up ...

Leon's gone.

Maxy is already the Captain.

Harry has been there and done that, and will be focusing on his footy and saving the world.

Brown hasn't played for a year and needs to focus on his footy.

Goldy and Buckley haven't been consistently holding a spot. Buckley hardly strikes me as leadership material (strange sentence now that I read it :))

Tarrant and BJ strike me as the types who just want to keep it simple and play footy. And who knows how much they're going to a part of the 2012 campaign as young lads come up through the fold.

So that leaves Reid and Tooves. Reid could probably do with another season under his belt. And Tooves, well he was on the brink of leaving the club only a few months ago and it wasn't handled the best way - mostly by his manager. Not sure if and how that would affect things.

I think going through the list, Shaw would seem an obvious choice if his last year's indiscretion is conveniently overlooked.

If it is left up to the players vote as to who they want in the leadership, how would anyone get to be excluded.
The only way would be for players not to vote for a certain individual.

If Pert/Walsh/Bucks have the ability to exclude certain players then the whole process is a sham anyway.

Either its left to playing group or its determined by others, I don't think we can have some sort of hybrid version.
