NAB Cup Attendances

Round 1, Week 1

Richmond, North, Hawthorn (Docklands) - 22,288
GWS, Collingwood, Bulldogs (Blacktown) - 7,086
Essendon, West Coast, Fremantle (Subiaco) - 27,581

Total: 59,965
Average: 18,985

29k there Friday night

Etihad was obviously updating their attendance figures as the evening went on as they posted several figures up on the board across the course of the evening.

I'm guessing someone from the age looked up at one stage, saw a number and wrote it down with their typical journalistic diligence.

I do recall they put up an 'official attendance' figure at some point, but I don't recall what it was, merely that it struck me as pretty good for a NAB cup match.

Slightly disappointing turnout at Blacktown on Saturday. With Collingwood playing, the AFL would've been hoping for at least 10k. Stands looked half-empty on TV as well.

Anyone care to predict the crowd for the GWS v Swans season opener? I think it may be around 42k.

The capacity is 10K at Blacktown and with the whole ground being general admission I think people simply chose to not sit in the stand (although some of the stand may have been reserved for club officials, corporates, AFL, etc.). They've had 9-10K at previous pre-season matches there (Syd-Carl, Syd-Ess, Syd-GC-GWS) but I don't think 7K was a terrible result.

I know attendances at ANZ have trended downwards, but I'd like to see them crack 50K for the season opener.

I do as I was there, and there were at least 30K in the stadium.
The figure given was just on 29K, but it looked more like 33 -34, to me.

I had a look at the screen in the last qtr but cant remember the exact figure but was a tick under 29K (28,9??) but gee it looked in the 30's and a few of my mates said the same....

From memory i think the crowds at Docklands and Blacktown were well below the corresponding figure last year, but Im not really surprised.

last year - GWS, Gold Coast and Sydney - sold out
last year - Carlton, Essendon, Richmond - cant remember but it was bloody packed
last year - Essendon, Fremantle, West Coast - no idea

I agree AT. Having been to Etihad on many occasions I consider myself a reasonable judge of attendance and was surprised to see the figure sit just under 29K as you have mentioned.

Level 1 was virtually full, Level 2 was reasonable under any cirmcumstances and Level 3 had a fair few there.
It seemed more than half full to me.

Mate of mine thought there was at least 35K, i said 32K so when i saw a trickle under 29K thought gee looks much more by looking around the ground but anyways overall a good crowd....

I thought 7k was a reasonable result but there was a lot of B&W stripes in the crowd.

Which is why I think the opening game at ANZ will be lucky to get much above 30k there. I'd consider 35k a good result.

GWS at this stage doesn't have a large supporter base (currently @5k members) and the Swans supporters have been deserting ANZ in droves.

The Swans attendances at ANZ in 2011
v Essendon 28k
v Collingwood 38k
v St Kilda 25k

Now given it is GWS' first game it will generate interest, but TBH I think most Swans fans have it marked down as a win and I'm not sure it will be considered as a must see game.

The problem as I see it for the AFL is that in deciding to fixture the game as a GWS home match they have limited their options.

Skoda ( 25k) should be too small, but ANZ (80K) may be embarrassingly large. A Sydney home game at the SCG (47K) seems to me to have more logic.

It will be interesting to see what promotions GWS/AFL run in the lead up to the game and whether, like the Swannies of old, that freebies are readily available.
