2012 NAB Cup Team

🥰 Love BigFooty? Join now for free.

Round 1 we get 20 players + 2 subs.

IMO Watson, Stanton, Hocking, Fletcher, Pears, Hardingham, Zaka, Melksham, Hurley, Monfries, Crameri, Ryder, Heppell and probably Hooker and Howlett are locks in the team so we should play a handful of those guys and the kids/fringe players.

I'd like to see the 5 fittest of those guys at the point of the NAB Cup play.

B: Hibberd - Davis - Dempsey
HB: Baguley - Hooker - Slattery
C: Colyer - Browne - Kavanagh
HF: Jetta - Gumby - O'Brien
F: Winderlich - Carlisle - Dell'Olio
R: Bellchambers - Browne - Lee
I: Ryder/Hille - Watson/Stanton/Hocking/etc
S: Steinberg - Watson/Stanton/Hocking/etc

I reckon that team is more of an experimental side, and would really struggle. Have to have some experience in there - Id include a few players who are coming back from injury or have been a little out of form - give them a chance to prove they are back on track for 2012;-

H.Slat Hooker Dyson
Hibberd Myers Dempsey
Kavanagh Lonergan Jetta
Crameri Carlisle Reimers
Winderlich Gumby Colyer

T.Bell Howlett Melksham

Ross Browne Steinberg Merrett Davis O'Brien Dell'Olio Lee

Has to be tough fitting in the PSD/Rookie listed players into the NAB Cup.

Draft on Dec 13 - club is away this week - Maybe a weeks training before XMAS - 2 week break for XMAS ( God Knows why ) Back around 5 Jan - Gives these players a total of about 6 weeks training at AFL intensity - before the NAB cup.

Suppose the first round of the NAB Cup with reduced game time is the best time to use these players.

Where is Merrett :(

People should now know im all about developing youth and playing some players out of position so here is a quick go

Hibberd - Davis - Howlett

Baguley - Myers - Dempsey

Merrett - Jetta - E Kav

Colyer- Gumby - NOB

Hooker - Carlisle - Dellolio

TBELL - Browne - Lee

Steinberg, Ross, Haridngham, Melky, Reimers, Lonergan, Dalgleish (must) ect

I'm pretty sure Hille, Fletch, McVeigh and maybe even Watson will be rested for the first few weeks. The better prospects out of the rookies need to be looked at as there is room for at least one promotion while Prismal recovers, going by the usual 12 rehab for an ACL they could play most of the year.

Long, Dalgleish and handball machine (name escapes me) will have to be looked at if they have a good preseason.

You can't just keep the players all year. They need holidays at some point.

Need a mix of youth and experience. Since we're only allowed 2 bench players, I'd start our back up ruck forward. Personally I'd also go 2 fringe players, 2 inexperienced players/players yet to debut and 2 best XXII locks in each third of the ground. So for me:

Davis-Pears-H Slattery
Bagueley(sp?)-Hooker-Hibberd
Stanton-Lonergan-Kavanagh
Dell'Ollio-Gumbleton-Monfries
Crameri-Steinberg-Merrett
Bellchambers-Hocking-Lee
Browne-Colyer-Myers-Dalgleish

You're not serious...?

Why do people always list ridiculously young teams in these threads? It's a myth that the better/older players don't play early on.

Most of our good experienced players will be playing first up, the ones that miss out will play second game.

It's just as important to get some game time into the likes of Watson, Hille, Stanton etc as it is the young kids.

What is the format for this NAB cup? If it's knockout expect even more of our experienced guys playing first up.

Last year we looked a million bucks over the preseason cup and through to round 8. We fell into a hole after that. Credit to the boys they played some good games later in the season, but still never recaptured that awesomeness that was on display early. I'm guessing that aim this year to start well but still have plenty of room to increase awesomeness as the season progressing and being in good enough shape to win at least one final next year.

Don't expect them to go all out in preseason cup. In fact I'd back them to "do a Sydney". Hell all the training sessions are closed so perhaps they want to play game plans close to their chest until they actually need them.

I think the teams are listed are more what the personal poster wants rather than expects. Every team plays 4 rounds of proper full on games before round 1 of the home and away season.

It would be idiotic to give a best 22 than expect that same 22 to line up every week. The clubs wouldnt do it like that. They would have very few players who they write 4 games next to their name before the NAB/Challenge games starts. Most would get 3 and 2 penciled in and a few would just get the one.

Basically their is little point to this exercise as the team knowingly will drastically change from round to round or even game to game.

FWIW the older players have tended to play towards the back half more of NAB/Challenge games rather than the early games. We probably dont have alot of these players, but ones i am talking about would be Jobe, Fletch, Hille, NLM and Mcveigh.

I tend to favour the young guys as i have excitement at seeing what they can do in an AFL scene. We need to get a look at as many players especially the mature aged to see which ones are best to upgrade and which ones that may struggle to get games throughout the year, but are worth keeping. Certainly for round 3, i would be looking to play my very best team just about, see who pulled up well, who wants another week after that and pick my round 4 team from their, basically the best 22 again. Usually is a 25-26, thats how most teams did it. I believe Rodney Eade said if your not in the round 4 NAB team than you wont play round 1 unless of drastic injury. Most teams go along those lines.

Same as last year I believe...

The first week is the same where there is 3 short games in one night. The following 2 weeks (full length games) also count towards some stupid ladder which determines who plays the final.

Only senior/best 22 player I can think of off the top of my head that didn't play much in last years NAB is David Hille. The rest of the older/best 22 players played alot of games and the players that played lots were the ones that lined up in round one.

As I said, it's a myth that we use the NAB to give heaps of game time to young kids and rest the senior guys.

The mature age recruits will be given an opportunity early and if they play well they will keep their spots throughout the NAB and into round 1 ala Crameri (providing a spot opens up)

Would rather send our best team over for the first round, purely so they can get some winning form over at Perth.

It will be a strong team and when the team is released we will have the usual outcry over guys like McVeigh, Stanton, Prismall and Gus playing when we should be playing some kid that went 198 in the rookie draft.

Key is right in one regard, people tend to just wanna see what they wanna see not what is best for the clubs preperation.

Doubt he'll be playing though.

In the scheme of things, I am not against trying for trying to win the NAB Cup.
Last years effort did great things for team morale, individual belief and membership support.

I understand that there is the risk of injury, but if we end up going quite well it might be enough to inspire the younger and newer players to take the extra step and get a spot in the 22.

Then again, last thing we want is another Winderlich/Lovett-Murray episode before the season has started.

You can't just keep the players all year. They need holidays at some point.

They get 6 weeks at the end of the season - older players get 8 weeks.

Could train up to the 23rd - off for 24-27 - train 28-30 - then off 31-2jan.

Lots of time to catch with family and friends at XMAS and New year.

And they spend 6 days a week at the club for the rest of the time and during the " time off" they are expected to train at a level that will see them back at the club at around 80 to 90% fit.

It is pretty standard that during their time off most of the players will be around the club doing weights etc for most of that time.

The other issue is you do not give the interstate players a lot of time to get away. Flying to Perth and back and staying 2 days is hardly enough time to see anyone !

Mickey Mouse round robin format first up. Why not pick a Mickey Mouse team and see who deserves to keep their spot as the team gets progressively stronger.

Crameri came from probably last spot on the list to best 22 because he was given an opportunity.

For Rd 2 of the NAB Cup, you drop a few more kids and bring in more Stantons, Howletts, Ryders etc and so on each progressive week.

It's not knockout this year, so all the more reason to see who should be in contention for Rd 1.
