John Clark to play 100th
Since starting his Maroon and Blue playing career at Brunswick St in 2007, John Clark or "Clarky" as he is affectionately known, will notch up game # 100 for the Fitzroy Football Club (Inc The Fitzroy Reds) as they tackle old rivals Rupertswood this Saturday at the mighty Brunswick St Oval.
After moving to Melbourne due to work commitments, and previously playing for his hometown Romsey and also Kyneton in the Bendigo League, Fitzroy sounded like a good place to have a kick and continue on his football career.
"The ground and connection to the old Fitzroy Footy Club was probably the key to me joining. I didn't know anyone at the club before I walked in but was made to feel very welcome by the coaches, players, staff and supporters from the word go.
I really enjoy playing for Fitzroy because it is a footy club which means a lot to a lot of people. The support we get at home and away games is like nothing else in local footy. There's a lot of good in Fitzroy".
When asked about his fondest Fitzroy memory in the lead up to the 100 game milestone, John lists running out in the 2009 Grand Final alongside brother Dan, and some of his now closest mates including current players Ben Atherton, James O'Reilly, and past player now assistant Coach Simon Kelleher right up there.
"The great friends I have made since joining the club is the most important thing I'll take out of my time here at Fitzroy."
How about season 2012 and beyond?
"There are some really good signs for this season. We've made a solid start but probably haven't played our best footy yet. The injection of new players is having a real positive impact and they are all great blokes. They have made a real difference and hopefully we can get it all together and go on to win a premiership. That'd be a nice way to wrap up my time at Fitzroy."
Get along and support John and the boys this Saturday as they tackle Rupertswood in Round 8 of the VAFA Premier C Home and Away season.
Action starts at 11:50 with the top of the ladder and undefeated Reserves, followed by the Seniors at 2:10.
