So, the NHLPA approved hybrid icing. Interesting. What is everyone's view on that. I hope it will stop players taking liberties on obvious lost causes, but I also hope linesmen will be lenient on it when there is a late rush from a forward on a tired defenseman that might win it.

Bring it on! Just hope the Oilers can finally show some improvement. We have some big defensemen that could help now. A playoff spot would be great.

I'm gonna go with the Rangers for the cup.
el oh el

I'm gonna go for Rangers to get shut out the most.

So I was enjoying the season opener until now.
Hoping all of that was precautionary and Parros can recover quickly.
This has really marred the game.

Here's the second Parros v Orr fight if you guys haven't seen it yet.

I've heard a few people claim that Orr's intentions were to cause that sort of injury to Parros, but his face and actions after the cut of the clip (he immediately signalled for a stretcher and looked quite concerned) make me feel as though this was unintentional.

Again, hoping for a really speedy recovery for Parros

You've got Dallas Eakins on the bench now! Hoping he's a catalyst for success, just like he was for the Marlies

Haven't seen any details yet- just got home from work and wanted to find out more about Franklin etc.. but a win over Montreal- tick... signed Kessel for 8 more years... tick v. good...

I'm a bit of a modernist and don't like the ancient and unnoble art of hockey fighting.... got to say I'm a bit embarrassed by Orr and Carlyle's 'fight club' ethos he brings to the leafs. But the American market really loves this stuff.

It was entrenched in AFL/SANFL/WAFL culture in the 70's too. But the whole concussion thing will surely force the NHL's hand.

Putting that tosser Cherry out to pasture would help too.

Jets 2, Oil 3. 2nd period. Night all.

Nothing to do with American or Canadian market loving it. In fact, there is a big push to get rid of it. It is just so entrenched in the game though.

The League will take steps to mandate it, but they'll never get rid of it. For the simple reason that it puts butts on seats in arenas and it helps govern the game. I mean, Matt Cooke and Steve Ott are about the only guys now who'll risk getting their faces rearranged by a brawler after cheap-shotting someone. Fighting is a deterrent. Take it away, and it'll be open season, and there'll be a dozen Marc Savard-like situations each year. Guys like Crosby will be massive targets. Suspensions and fines don't kill a guy who's on millions, but getting on the wrong end of a guy who beats his lights out, that will.

Two ripping games to start the season. Washington's Mikhail Grabovski scored a hat trick for Washington, but the Caps fell 6-4. Similarly wild in Montreal where George Parros was taken to hospital after face-planting the ice in a fight with Colton Orr. It was on for young and old. Leafs won, in Montreal.

Two reasons why fighting shouldn't be banned after the Parros incident -

#1 - Basically this,

Take [fighting] away, and it'll be open season, and there'll be a dozen Marc Savard-like situations each year. Guys like Crosby will be massive targets.

You'd also have a dozen Sean Avery's in the league, because they'd be able to get away with more douche-baggery unpunished.

#2 - The injury was not caused by the fight itself. Yes, Parros had his arms wrapped up when he hit the ice due to a fight, and yes it's very unfortunate that happened - but if you want to ban fighting due to this concussion that was caused, you may as well ban hitting for the concussions that causes. I reckon that sort of fall could take place incidentally in the rub of the game. It wasn't like he took a KO punch or anything.

Side note: I don't want to make accusations, but I've rewatched the Orr v Parros II fight and the Ashton v Tinordi fight and to me it looks like the fight only broke out because Subban wouldn't stop yapping at Orr, and Parros decided to step in. Parros shouldn't have to pay the price he's paying for doing so, but if Subban hadn't been a douche, Parros probably would've skated the rest of the game.

I'm writing a piece on fighting for US Sports Down Under. Name-checked Cooke and Ott a time or two.

don't forget to mention that Buffalo just rewarded Ott with a 'C' on his jersey at away games.

Buffalo's welcome to that mutt. Jack Edwards called him a sociopath once, during that wild Dallas vs. Boston game where there were three fights in three seconds from the face-off. I don't know that he's too far wrong.
