2013 ATP Masters 1000/WTA Premier: Indian Wells

And now the big tournaments come thick and fast with the first Masters 1000 event of the year while it being a mandatory event for the women as well. My favourite non-slam event of the year is in the U.S state of California which is the most attended event out of the non-slam events. Everyone is here so far on the men's side including Rafael Nadal who is playing his first hardcourt event in his comeback, a lot of interest will be there. The women are all here apart from Serena and Li who has an ankle issue.

The women have started qualifying today and main draw start Thursday while the men start qualfying tomorrow and main draw starts friday. List of aussies competing:

Men:
Marinko Matosevic
Lleyton Hewitt
Bernard Tomic
Matthew Ebden (qualfying)

Women:
Sam Stosur (1R: Bye)
Casey Dellacqua (Final round qualifying vs. Burnett)
Anastasia Rodinova (Final round of qualfying vs. de Brito)

TV Coverage: For the men it's on ESPN although they are missing bits and pieces by starting late a couple of days but it starts on Sunday with 2nd round coverage at 7am (missing the first couple of hours) going throughout the day to 5pm. Check you local guides but order of play starts at 5am each day if you have tennistv etc. The women will only have the final on Fox Sports, will have to go to tennistv.com for more coverage, it says it'll be starting from Sunday as well. Semis and finals times here:

Women's Semi: 12.30pm-4.30pm Sat Mar 16 tennistv.com (Fox Sports have it delayed)
Men's Semi: 6am-10am Sun Mar 16 ESPN
Women's Final: 6am-8am Mon Mar 17 Fox Sports
Men's Final: 8am-10am Mon Mar 17 ESPN

Enjoy!

Love this tournment.

Rodionova lost in straights and Casey had a good 6-3 6-1 win. So she is in the main draw. Ebden playing now lost the first set to Golubev 7-6 but is up 3-1 in the second.

Ebden ended up winning that first round qualfying 6-2 in the 3rd. Will take on Dancevic for a shot at defending all those points...

And the draw for the men has come out. The link is in the OP and probably the most noteworthy feature is Rafa and Federer are in the same quarter! That hasn't happened since 2004. Anyway, here's who the aussies got:

Matosevic vs. Robredo - Got himself a great draw really, this is very winnable and then a 2nd round match against Monaco which he would also have a good shot at. Possible 3rd is Querrey and while that is too far down the line, he did beat him in Memphis. Can't whinge about this one.

Tomic vs. Bellucci - Tomic is favourite but has potential to be an absolute mugfest, Gasquet is waiting in the 2nd round.

Hewitt vs. Rosol - Actually a good draw for Lleyton, Rosol will have to be on song to win this and that happens rarely. Isner waiting in the 2nd round who has been having knee issues. Unsure how he is going to come out but he'll be keen defending final points.

Sam has a bye in the first round and then Keys or Oudin in the 2nd. Keys could give her some trouble.

All 3 of the men with good draws. Matosevic a decent chance to make the 4th v Djokovic, and Hewitt has drawn Isner (who is struggling with a knee complaint still I'm pretty sure) in the 2nd Round. Would probably have to beat Wawrinka to get a 4th round matchup with Federer. Tomic's draw is a little harder and I can see him going out in the 1st/2nd round just with how disinterested he has looked lately..

Yeah all have winnable round 1 matches thats for sure. Im worried for Sam against Keys she has a big game. Casey qualified and will play Medina Garrigues tomorrow. Not the best draw.

Can't see her winning that

Going through ESPN next week, man they are missing a lot of coverage due to replays of fa cup, champions league and college basketball. Making that tennistv investment worth it even more

Dissapointing. Last year they had really good coverage. Although i loved when the master 1000 events were on Fox Sports. Anyway Tomic won his first round 6-3 6-4. Cant see him beating Gasquet in the second round though. Hewitt is to play after the Mattek-Sands/Hampton match.

Hewitt beat Rosol 6-4 3-6 6-1. Isner next should be intresting. Matosevic is first on Staduim 3 tomorrow which will be 6:00AM Melbourne time. Ebden is first on court 6.

Very thankful Lleyton got past Rosol, kind of matches he still needs to be winning. Isner will probably depend on how John comes out. Very winnable. Don't know about Tomic

Looking like no streams tomorrow despite there being coverage in the us. Matosevic's match I would like to see

Matosevic wins 7-5 6-2. Good win for him. Monaco in the second round is winnable aswell. Ebden beat Kuznetsov 6-3 4-6 6-4. He has Dimitrov in the second round depending on what Dimitrov shows up Matt can cause an upset here. Probally more wishful thinking though.

Stosur Vs Keys first on Staduim 1 tomorrow from 6:00AM. Then Hewitt Vs Isner. Tomic Vs Gasquet fourth match on Staduim 2. Im at work from 6-3 hopfully i can get home in time for Tomic's match but i dont think i will.

Good start for the 4 aussie men, rare to have 4 australian men through to the 2nd round of any overseas tournament.

Ebden has a winnable 2nd round match against Dimitrov, but will come to a halt against Djokovic.

Matosevic has a winnable match against Monaco, but will find it hard against Querrey/Sock in 3rd round. Possible Djokovic 4th round.

Hewitt could conceivably get past Isner & Wawrinka, but its highly unlikely. Fed would be waiting in the 4th round.

Tomic (if in form) probably has the most open section of the draw, but has Gasquet 2nd round, Janowicz/Nalbandian 3rd round, prob Berdych 4th round, prob Ferrer quarters. Could see him getting to 4th and giving Berdych a scare, but will likely be up against it with Gasquet.

Nice win for Lleyton against Isner 6-7 6-3 6-4. In the last couple of years, the type of players that Lleyton can seem to beat that are higher ranked are the big servers. Faces Wawrinka next, will be tough to get the win in that match.

Sam won her 2nd round match against Keys 6-3 6-4. Faces Peng next, hoping that this American win can start her season. She needs some points with quite a few to defend in the clay court season coming up.

Just a huge win for Lleyton, at a stadium where he won the tournament for him, those are the sort of matches is why he still plays. Stan will be very tough to beat but I am very curious to see how he goes.

Sam played probably her best match of the season so far, pretty solid all round. Has no business losing to peng if she plays like she did today.

Isner drops out of the top 20 with that win to Hewitt. Apparently if Querrey fails to pick up points at Indian Wells, it will be the first time no american has been in the top 20.

Mad result there from Lleyton. I watched a bit of the first set before I went to work. Even though he lost it he was playing well. I really liked how he sucked Isner in a bit to hit some lovely passing shots.

I didn't wake up early enough for Sam's match but her second serve stats were pretty crazy. Although Keyes' dickhead agent is apparently pissed off coz they were cheering for Sam over an American. Good to hear Sam played well, as did her opponent. Now for Bernie and Marinko to do some dammage.

Ferrer (my favourite, alas) just lost to Kevin Anderson, so Tomic's draw opens up a little. Still, couple quality players in that quarter, will need to be at top form.

Been a few seeds knocked out today. If Simon hadn't of made that 5-1 comeback against Lorienzi , I think that little section would of been seedless for whoever who made the quarters. Fed was solid today, should apply himself big this week given the break he is taking after this event.

Now for the Tomic games to begin!!
