As I've continued to say, I really hope we take Bontempelli, thought we may lean towards Scharenberg, because of his build, this rubbish about posters on here, discussions about Bontempelli, fumbled under pressure, well what can I say. The two blokes that I know, just talk Bontempelli up to me, one has been in recruiting for years, at a very successful AFL club, and the other I helped out at the same club for 3 years. They tell me the upside to Bontempelli is terrific, they would take him with their pick, but he won't be there. Both men know the recruiting backwards, I hope we take Bontempelli.

I'll post my write-ups here as well so people don't need to navigate to the draft thread if they're not interested.

Pick 4 - Western Bulldogs: James Aish
James-Aish.jpg
Height: 183cm
Weight: 74kg
General Comments: There's been a lot of talk about Aish lately. Regarded as the best draft option after Boyd for much of the year, he's slipped down the order according to some. While some cite his champs stats - where a huge majority of his possessions were uncontested, placing him in a category with the likes of Cale Morton - there is also talk about some clubs being concerned that he'll want to return to South Australia after a few years. That probably isn't helped by the recent 'exodus' of young Brisbane Lions, which may have made clubs a bit more wary than they would have been in recent years. Whether this talk is the pre-draft hyperbole that gets spun about a lot of players is yet to be seen - but given the quality of Aish as a player it's a risk I feel sides should be prepared to take (provided he does interview well, of course).
Strengths: In my mind, Aish has never stopped being the second best player in the draft. His champs numbers are concerning on paper, but when you consider how well-stocked SA were for players inside the contest it's no real surprise that he played a more outside role, allowing him to use his strengths to the best of his ability. He's a brilliant user of the footy by both hand and foot, and on both sides. He finds space effortlessly and operates so well in it as well, using his dynamic sidestep and burst of speed over a short distance to really give himself more time than the next guy. Additionally his vision and decision making are both superb, allowing him to really hurt the opposition when he gets the opportunity. While he is an outside player, first and foremost, he has no problems inside the contest. He's a skinny kid, but it doesn't bother him. He's more than capable of winning his own ball and entering the contest when it's required of him, and he certainly doesn't lack the courage to put his body on the line. It's for these reasons that I think his outside-oriented reputation is really overstated - he doesn't lack any of the tools required to be serviceable inside the contest apart from body size - which can be worked on - he simply didn't need to in a strong SA side. The other promising aspect of his game is how damaging he can be within the contest. Unlike some other outside midfielders in the draft his vision and ability to kick on both sides of his body allows him to hurt the opposition even when he's not in space - something that bodes well for his potential at AFL level. Despite being quite lean, he is reasonable one on one and always competes hard. His positioning on his opponents is often very good and, despite not being as strong as a Scharenberg type, can mark the ball very well overhead.
What He Needs To Work On: The big thing for Aish is his strength and size. At AFL level he's going to be under more pressure, get more attention and be forced to enter the contest a lot more than he's used to. At a little over 70kg, Aish will need to build a bit more bulk in order to allow him to compete more consistently with the bigger bodies. We saw with Macrae's success (albeit in limited game time) this year that the players who can find space and time and compete vigorously are more than capable of making an impact, even if they're quite slim, and I think Aish's abilities will allow him to perform similarly - especially given that he'll be expected to do much of his work on the outside.
As do most young midfielders of his ilk, he'll need to learn how to cope with extra attention and tags. Hartung kept him to four disposals in round three of the champs, which demonstrates my point. He won't be tagged at AFL level just yet, but it's something he needs to be prepared for as such a damaging midfielder won't be left unchecked for long. No doubt, as he builds his strength, he'll be better equipped to deal with this type of attention by becoming more of a force inside the contest.
How He Fits: The 'Dogs are building a formidable core inside the contest, with Liberatore, Wallis, Hrovat, Macrae, Dahlhaus and Smith as those younger options with Griffen, Cooney, Picken and Stevens all capable older guys. Aish compliments them beautifully, with his work on the outside allowing the 'Dogs a bit more speed and a bit more precision with their forward entries. Working under the likes of Griffen and Cooney, Aish won't cop a tag for a while, allowing him to find his feet at AFL level and also to learn to deal with it the attention, which will no doubt come in the future. He also brings with him some great leadership qualities to go along with the future leadership of the likes of Wallis, Roughead and Hrovat.

if saint's get Mark Williams they most likely will take Aish :(

Scharenberg. There's a well known quote out there in the internet, that shows how much Chocco loves him Shazz.

As reported in Adelaide Now:

Port Adelaide premiership coach Mark Williams once described Matthew Scharenberg as the best schoolboy footballer he had seen since Wayne Carey.

However if we've learned anything from Watters' demise it's that Pelchen beats to the sound of his own drum. I'm not sure a new coach will make too much of a difference to their selection.

May I ask why?

Every time I watch him, I walk away wanting him even less than I did before. Really selfish player who turns it over a lot trying to do something flashy, or going for it by himself.

Profile: Tall, outside player who really stands out with his linebreaking ability and his strength overhead at his height. Bourke is a real athlete with some real top end pace allowing him to really take on the game and do damage with his run and carry. Bourke also has a long kick on him and is an above average user of the footy. He has some positional range with the ability to play wing, half forward or half back well. Next stage in his development will be winning more of his own footy because at this point it really comes from those handball receives or marks.
AFL.com:
The inside word

Medium midfielder with fantastic athleticism and overhead marking ability. Can play at both ends of the ground as well as through the midfield. Is a thumping left-foot kick and loves to run and carry the footy on the outside. Has clean hands and likes to bring his teammates into the game.

I've seen him play once and he typified what is said above

Just hope Aish is there at 4 and it doesn't matter who we get at the other picks its been a good draft for us, he just compliments our team so so much!

I still can't see him getting past St Kilda though.

How
How much would you like to bet.

FWIW Gibbs isn't a complete bust, and I have him borderline top 15 from his draft class including the Rookie draft. Right now it's all still speculation and opinion as to how well they will go in the AFL.

I think Gibbs is underrated. He's not a superstar, but he would be very good for our midfield.

I still think Scharenberg is the favourite for our pick.

I think Matt Scharenberg will be a 250 game, club captain type of player. Be it midfield of halfback. Reminds me a lot of Luke Hodge.

Seeing a lot of the talk is on our first round pick. Who does everyone hope will slip to us for our second round pick? Who would you like to see us grab?

Personally I would love to grab one of Fort, Sicily and there was one other player who I forgot his name. I think Fort would be a good addition, I think we need more players who can shut down players in the back half, we seem to have a few players that can carry the ball. But once Morris goes, we will lose our best shut down defender.

I know Fraser Fort he's pretty funny. Fort, Sicily or Bourke I'd be happy with at that pick

I would not get Aish
Big call, I know, the kid has nothing special - nothing
After Boyd, Kelly is the most likely

But for me, if we believe we don't need another mid fielder than Kade Kolo.... is a stand out, what an exquisite left foot, fast, good in and out. If we pass on him than Sharenberg looks strong too but not quite sold on him

If we are after another midfielder, without doubt we should be jumping on Nathan Freeman - check out his highlights and stats. Takes on the game and thru traffic like there is no one there, super fast, and a long kick. Watch his repeat efforts.
Not sure why he is not rated higher, makes no sense.

If we passed on Aish for Freeman I'd burn down Whitten oval, in saying that it will not happen.

Freeman was the third best mid on his TAC cup team. I think he's massively overrated.

Certainly wouldn't spend a top 10 pick on him.

Tested in at 194cm too. Might see him go higher coz of that maybe.
Oh wow, that's insane. Thought he was around the 191cm mark. Could definitely do worse than have a look at him. Massively talented. The first time I saw him run was ridiculous, I couldn't believe how quickly he covered the ground for such a big guy. Great shutdown game too.

Do you happen to know how he tested in the sprints/agility?

Fort tested bad and to be honest I've never really rated him. I'd be disappointed if we got him.

A Vandeleur or a McStay would be a good gets at our 2nd pick. Love Sicily as well. But it's probably going to be Ben Brown.

Have no idea on Fort's testing. So was making my opinion based on what has been said otherwise. But if he truly tested bad, then I guess you can cross him off the list. Surprised he's been able to be a good shut down defender with poor results though, unless he got the slowest forward each week. You need speed, agility and strength, as well as ability to read the ball in the air to be a good shut down defender.

McStay was the other one I was trying to think of. Will be happy with him or Sicily.

3 seconds flat over 20m, top 11% repeat sprints. Agility in the bottom 37% (8.68s). I think he should get drafted and around the 3rd round is his range.
