Hartung will please the crowd who think Richmond is too slow and needs another outside runner. I'd like to see his inside game develop a bit more, but if Richmond is able to recruit Adams and keep the 19th pick, then Hartung makes a lot of sense, a nice inside outside balance.

Do people think that Adams + 19 for Foley + 11 is doable? Seems fairly good for Richmond, although I doubt Foley will be happy, and I don't know whether it will hurt Richmond's culture, given Foley has been a loyal tiger. No-one would let Richmond trade say King or Newman, yet Foley has been as important as these guys.

Hartung a great outside player but unless you have multiple early picks then I think your best suited to go for a more rounded player. Would much rather Salem who has a similar outside game albeit doesn't take the game nearly as much as Hartung and has a much stronger inside game. Though obviously it comes down to who's available.

Foley being traded just isn't going to happen. Unless he wants to go. There is no way we would offer him up and even then he is too injury prone for GWS to want him.

Edit - Plus everyone should probably wait until he gets a full pre-season under his belt to see if he can regain some of his speed, before passing judgment. If he does then he is in our 22 anyway.

Yeah spot on. Not sure he's what they would be after either. Reckon they would be keener on a Daniel Cross who I physically bigger and stronger and more likely to protect the younger GWS mids

So if the top 20 are pretty even I think it would come down to two main factors for us. 1 - need. 2 - character. What do we need the most: inside mid, outside run/distributor, speed/x factor, two way run? And who is the best character. Who will train the hardest, be the best team player, compete the hardest?

Ideally I'd hope we pick Freeman and he turns into a dangerfield type but it worries me that he doesn't find the footy consistently. Matt White has these attributes, Veszpremi was meant to have similar attributes. With Dusty looking like staying I don't think he is a great need as Dustin is our explosive x factor.

I suspect we will target a player who is more consistent over 4 quarters. I think Dimma has a more money ball attitude that favours numerical output over inconsistent x factor type output. So who are the types that fit into this category? Salem, Crouch?

The one thing that worries me is outside types often struggle to make the adjustment to AFL level unless they are truly exceptional. At junior level you have a hell of lot more time on the outside and so you don't truly see there ability under the pressure, time and intensity of AFL level.

I know polec has been injured but he has never looked comfortable at AFL level but he is one of many. WHE I don't think has been great but being at GWS makes it harder. Meyer has only now started to look remotely useful Jetta never has. Gaff killed it at first but is being found out this year and I don't think he has enough pace to make up for it. Toumpas could be down to Melbourne development but has struggled. Yarran at the blues teases but never taken that next step and I often think its cos he can't think fast enough at AFL level. Palmer, Gibbs and scully guys look amazing at lower levels as they can run and get time but will never be elite at AFL level (I know Gibbs is very very good but his SANFL form was exceptional but he has never gone to that level at AFL level whereas Selwood as a strong inside mid became a star).

Those are just off the top of my head but I've always thought outside pace is overstated and would rather strong inside guys with better skills and decision making in tight as at AFL level they think faster on the outside.

IMO Martin while also forward may be more outside, Lids is outside, S Edwards more outside IMO.

That's fair enough but I don't think Acres is a pure outside player and I think he will be able to play both, but he's just very good on the outside. Most of the guys you've listed are purely outside and are either small, slow or both. Acres is a big kid, with very good skills, has good pace and an absolute ball magnet and is versatile and able to play anywhere. I'm not against Acres per say I was using your post as more of a segway into outside types at junior level. I mean I've only seen acres in the Vic country game so cannot make a full comment but I was far more impressed by hartung but he is the type I'd more direct my observation at.

For mine there are not any elite outside mids. Hill might be the closest, Jetta (Syd) had one great year in a game plan built around him, rioli is good in patches, motlop might be closish but it's only one year. The best players in the comp are mostly guys who are inside who are end up being good on the outside. Ablett, Pendles, Cotchin, Danger, Rockcliff, Hannerbery, Beams, Boak, Wingard, shuey, Mundy Fyfe, Kennedy, Ziebell, Judd, Hayes, Libba, Griffen and so on and so forth.

I just remembered Wells who is probably elite. I just personally think we should be looking at Vlastuin types. Acres might be that??? Like I said I haven't seen enough of him but don't waste our 1st pick on a hartung if a Salem/Dunstan/Sheed/Dumont ect...

I'm not adverse to Taylor but I really worry about his size!

Frankly i would prefer a Barlow type but there doesn't appear many around based on the profiles. We might get inside mids with later picks yet. I am not yet convinced we may pick a inside mid with our first pick. I support best available whoever that is

I think he is more likely to make it now, and has shown some better qualities but I am not as confident in him than someone like Dusty or Fyfe that are genuine jets with most boxes ticked.

Should be a good tough nut with skill in the middle but not sure Adams will step far above that

I agree with this, I reckon in finals players that don't win their own ball become pretty useless, all of the best finals players over the last few years have had a strong inside game: Hayes, Goddard, Johnson, Chapman, Mitchell, Hodge, Pendlebury, Judd, O'Keefe, Kennedy.

IMO, the first two rounds you go for 'low-risk' picks with an inside game, which is what we've done lately. Then in the 3rd round and with rookie picks you can have a crack at some outside types as well as small forwards and ruckmen and players like that.

And I don't really agree with the chorus on here about us being deficient in speed. Wouldn't say that Freo have much speed in their side.

I am never categorical about anyone. That was from a range perspective in terms of evaluating risks benefits , pros and cons etc..
