The World Superbike Championship kicks off this weekend at our very own Phillip Island circuit and promises to be a beauty. Last year, WSB was one of, if not the most exciting motorsport championships on Earth with 5 of the 6 manufacturers all claiming race win and the riders championship decided by a scant 1/2 a point. Unfortunately I don't have the time for a full preview but trust me when I say it's worth your while to watch.

Reigning champ Max Biaggi decided to retire on top which opens up the championship even further. Last years runner-up, Kawasaki's Tom Sykes, starts this year as a warm favourite but has plenty of competition to fight off. Marco Melandri is the man that should have won for BMW if he didn't crash his brains out to finish the season and will be strong again. 2011 champ, Carlos Checa, owns P.I. having won 4 of the last 5 races there and the new Ducati will be fast. Add the likes of Eugene Laverty, Chaz Davies, Johnny Rea, Leon Haslam, Sylvain Guintoli who are all past race winners and the fast Leon Camier on the improving Suzuki and the door is wide open for any kind of result. Bring it on! :thumbsu:

About to watch Super pole very excited for the new season! Haven't made my mind up who to go for yet this year :p but expecting Laverty to carry on the good form for Aprillia this year and obviously Melandri and Checa to be right up there. Should also be good to see how Chaz goes on his new BMW and i will also keep my eye on Loris Baz he looks good. Hopefully Sykes wrist injury doesn't hamper him too much this weekend!

Aprillia domination! Guintoli looks right at home on the factory Aprillia and taking off from where Biaggi left it. Awesome last few laps from Laverty in R2! Brave race from Melandri also after his huge crash with Checa. I hate seeing a rider go down like Checa did and not move, makes your heart sink. Luckily from what i hear he's doing ok!

An excellent way to start the series. Some great races though a disappointing with the Aprilia almost whitewash. Still, don't expect that to be the norm. Great wins to Laverty and Guintoli, both are class riders and will be competitive but won't have it all their own way this year. Tom Sykes was riding with a fractured wrist so a pair of 5ths is a solid start for him. Melandri was on for a pair of podiums but for Checa knocking him off and he scored his second race podium with a bung shoulder that requires surgery so expect him to take it to the Aprilias (he's my pick for the title). Checa was fast too til he crashed and knocked himself out. It's horrible to see a rider lie motionless, happy to hear he's ok.

The supersport race was excellent too, Sofuoglu and Lowes are going to have an immense battle for the title this year with rookie Van der Mark chiming in and old man Foret as well. I was impressed with Roby Rolfo on the beautiful MV Agusta til he retired with destroyed tires, was running as high as fourth which was an excellent effort on the brand new F3.

It's going to be another fantastic season.

The Supersport race at Monza last night was one of the most bizarre races you'll ever see.
Two laps in and one of the riders midpack came off at the 2nd chicane. You could see heaps of fuel get spilt out when his bike tumbled. The next lap the leaders come up to the chicane, with no flags out warning them and BANG,the lead pack of 4 all went down and others crashed into them. Finally the red flag comes out. After a long clean up the race was re-started,but not for long. Two laps in and a female rider comes to grief on the chicane leading into the back straight. Her bike flies into the gravel and she slams into the airbag wall, which got damaged in the hit.Red flag again.
Take 3 - first chicane 2 midpack riders touch sending one flying into others and taking out a heap of riders.

Eventually they postponed it and ran it after the 2nd WSBK race.

^Yes was absolutely bizarre! Van Der Mark ended up with four broken bones in his foot after the 3rd incident too. crazy stuff! Never seen the top 4 go down like that or 3 red flags in a race, was crazy. Back to school for the WSS lads.

Back to school for the marshalls after the 1st red flag
Yeah which was odd because they showed footage of a Marshall rubbing his foot over oil and pointing it out after everyone had gone through and they still didn't give warning. Pretty poor but whoever the cowboy was on the Kawasaki in restart 3 who took out a few riders would have pissed off the entire paddock.

He made contact with another rider mid-pack,which is what might've sent him going off into other riders

Ah ok i didn't see much of the events leading up to it just the dive through the corner into pack of riders.

I didn't see the race after the SBK but heard Sofuoglu stacked it and Lowes took the win. Huge win for Lowes.

Supersport rider Andrea Antonelli was killed in a lap 1 crash in tonights race at Moscow.
It was pouring rain and he's come off and Lorenzo Zanetti didn't see him and hit him.The race was red flagged and postponed until after the 2nd SBK race but riders had a meeting and have cancelled the rest of the meeting.

Race 1 of the SBK was carnage.Less than half the field finished. It started as a dry race but bucketed down later and all riders [that were left] pitted for wet tyres.

R.I.P Andrea. Horrible news. I saw it on TV but they never really mentioned Antonelli just that Zanetti was up and ok. I hope Zanetti is coping ok would be horrible for him. Very cruel sport sometimes.

As soon as I saw this on a news site, memories of Super Sic came flooding back and the feelings of that day are still terrible. It is always tragic to lose a member of the racing community and I feel so bad for Antonelli's friends and family. Spare a thought also for Zanetti as he would be crushed right now, whether or not he could have done anything to avoid the accident. I remember Rossi and Edwards being distraught over the part they played in Simoncelli's death, even though they could scarcely have done anything differently.

RIP Andrea Antonelli.

Actually the commentators were saying the race should be red flagged as they could see a stretcher out for Antonelli and when you saw the bikes go by where the crash was, which was only a corner or two before it was red flagged, you could see an ambulance sitting by the edge of the track.they showed Zanetti walking back down pit lane.

I'm suprised they started the Supersport race.I thought they might delay it and see if the weather got better.

I was so pissed off last night. Melbourne lost again, the Aussies were losing wickets in the cricket and then Tom Sykes bike bloody blew up.

Seething as I was (what else could go wrong to me) after the news started coming out of the death of Andrea Antonelli, it's amazing how perspective changes. Anger and selfishness turn to sadness and compassion. So sad for his family, friends, team and rivals who will all be absolutely shattered. Only 25 years old and in the form of his life, he was having an excellent year.

RIP Andrea Antonelli. You'll be missed by many. :(

This is a tribute from his team on their web page. I think it reads:

“Goodbye Andrea

“You made us dream, we did have fun and you made us become one of the top teams in Supersport, but this did not give you the glory you deserve.

“Now 'He' wanted you up there amongst the clouds. We will ride here, mere mortals, and we will continue in your memory and in your passion.

“Andrea, you were a great rider and a golden boy, one day we meet in heaven we will hug you again.

“Do not forget, we know you will see us from up there ... Give us the strength to continue.”

Just on whether the race should have been run or not, that's a really difficult thing to say. There have been hundreds of wet races in conditions as bad or worse. I guess the thing that got me was how he crashed in the middle of a straight. My guess (and it will remain a guess until an official announcement is made because I'm not watching it again) is that he's clipped another bike and gone down. He was rag-dolled when Zanetti struck him.

It was such a downer after one of the most bizarre races I've ever seen. For probably 10 laps the race was run with half the track bone dry and half of it utterly drenched! Some pitted early for rain tires and only went as fast as the guys tip toeing on slicks through the rain. Only in the last 6 laps did they all change to full rain tires when Melandri gave a masterclass on wet weather riding.
