Thoughts on Marcon? love him with a late pick.
Do you really think we will get a late pick that will play next year? If they do then we will either have screwed our season or suffered an injury crisis. The club keeps saying we need guys already on the list to step up ... so we should look for late picks with great long term potential rather than waste them on an instant silver bullet. Our 2nd pick onwards should come into the club and get trampled over by guys already on the list pushing for spots in the senior side. Then we know we are getting it right. What position will these speed mids play? They need to be able to contest if inside, greater than 186cm, since we missing ruck rovers or greater than 186cm on the wing left side to complement Ellis. Lids and Martin can play wing if not Lennon to maintain versatility through rotations so ideally our outside mid will also need to play back or forward as well to fit in to our rotations. With Lids and Martin forward we lack in the tall mid department while we have a good compliment of mosquitos already in the middle. Maynard might be an option at 33 but can't see the required mid class needed for us at pick 12 unfortunately. Luckily there are some left footer options in the second round and later which might suit us.Ellis might be available at 33 I guess if we are lucky.
Laverde is a nice option at 12 but I don't think he will be available. We probably need to wait for better mids next year that have more pedigree than the 2014 class. Drummond might be available for our third pick as an option as well I guess. We just need to avoid more average types if we can!
We could get Cocky I guess but the concern is we play on without a back line apart from poor Rance tearing his hair out for another year!

FJ even has Twomey fooled ...Twomey has us taking Ellis with both Weller and Laverde still available.

I honestly reckon Twomey has no idea. For us I mean.
Play Lever ... who has hardly played since he was 16 ahead of Chaplin as KP and Rance may as well shave his head save pull out his hair!!!Not sure what you mean? Unlike Dimma or whoever I would have played Miles game one.
I rate Lever ahead of Chaplin already even though he hasn't played a game. A bit like Malt house maybe I think if they are good enough they are ready. I followed the baby bombers with interest in 1993 and knew Geelong would win the premiership in 2007 when they got Selwood in the 2006 draft.
Howe and Drummond are 19 year olds. I could easily through them straight in if I think they are an upgrade on current on-field passengers.
Thats crazy talkTwomey has us taking Ellis with both Weller and Laverde still available.

Don't get me wrong I think Lever is talented but if you move Vlastuin from halfback into the midfield and put a Duggan or any number of others from this draft on a HBF with Chaplin staying right where he is, then we advance a whole lot faster. Rance + Chaplin + Astbury all fit and playing together regularly is just fine and use pick 12 on a quality midfielder ...You can see how high I rate Chaplin. If Lever can square the odd contest with his opponent thats a step up from Chaplin. On the other hand, I rate Lever pretty high. Fletcher played for Essendon as a school kid, I can't see a problem with Lever. Rance can give him some defensive guidance. Rance can push up at times, take the better forward, Astbury can take the power forward.
Lever can always start on a HBF for starters at the outset with a bigger player at CHF to guide him for the first few games. It would depend on match ups naturally. We can rotate Griff back there against weaker opposition to support at times. I can't see a problem and it should advance our team development

I do not regard Chaplin AFL standard even when at Port.
You and I have pretty different definitions of AFL standard then.
A guy who's played 182 AFL games not AFL standard? Mmmmkay
took Newy so long to play in a Final as we didn't play a Final for his whole career up till last year & he didn't play in a Final in '01Agree. McGuane was never AFL standard as a back man but carved a good career out of a weak team. Arguably he was handy as a forward at the end which he was originally recruited as.
Richo and Ottens largely played in teams under Frawley that were not AFL standard.
That's probably why it took so long for Newman to play in a final!
In this way a player can play many games and still be a hack if he fills a need. When you compare the likes of Angus Graham to Grimley it is obvious Graham was lucky to ever play a game!

Rance was falling over himself on social media when we made the FA play for Chaplin. The reason why is that Chaplin helps Rance to do what Rance does best ... it's like spaghetti & meatballs ... they go good together!I do not regard Chaplin AFL standard even when at Port. I think he is a Clayton's back man. The back man you have when you do not have a backman.
No offense but with a backline of Duggan, Chaplin and Houli our defense will get slaughtered and the midfield working overtime to break even. Poor Rance and the fullback line will be out of breath chasing long leads with no chop out support from the half back line!
I have more faith in TV getting his s.. together and McBean stepping up than Chaplin raising his level. At Chaplin's age he is only going to go further backwards now and settle as a battling depth player IMO!
I would just throw up if this happens , I cant see how any recruiter in their right mind could leave Laverde to take EllisTwomey has us taking Ellis with both Weller and Laverde still available.
