Like so many on here, I'm going to say that I'll trust the recruiters to do their job and pick the best kids.

Having said that, I'm really coming round to Petracca. Looks a beast of a player, absolutely huge body-size, Chris Judd-like by the look of it. Could base our midfield around him for years to come.

And that is the point - we need a midfield general - a great player that brings other mids into the game. He will also impact straight away which is another bonus. I'm sold - go for GWS talls next year when they come out of contract. Grab a tall at our second pick.

Also lets see what picks we end up with - our second pick might be either a priority pick after all....

You all know I love my big blokes, that's not news.

That being said, the idea of having competitive rucks (Longer/Hickey) breaking even around, or tapping directly to the advantage of a clearance beast like Luke Dunstan, who can give the ball off to a 'burst' mid like Petracca - with his agility, tackle-bursting body strength and pace - is extremely enticing, particularly if we have some elite-kicking outside mids riding shotgun.

Then in effect 'all' we need is a capable target forward (i.e. McKenzie) to kick to; either they mark it or bring it to ground for Billings, Milera, Minchington, Templeton etc... Stanley, White, Lee and maybe Bruce will provide the leading targets.

As good as Paddy will be, and he will, he'll be worthless if we can't get the ball to him.

Talls take longer to develop. There will be quality mids avail in every draft. Pick the quality tall this year while there's one avail, get mids from second rounder onwards and the next few drafts.

Petracca isn't just a 'mid' in that sense, he's equally special up front.

You take the tall if they demand it, but you take the special player always.

I'll be ecstatic either way TBH.

Where are Bunton and Weidemann meant to go in next years draft Rahul

If they are top draft prospects then to say there won't be high quality forwards next year is false

'Spose that's what the show is for, and if he got into an elite system he would get shaped up pretty quickly.

'Elite kick' piqued my interest, and clearly fit as all get out... But came across as a solid gold knob, whereas Goss came across as a bit lazy and a touch of a smartarse.

One's fixable if he wants it, the other isn't.

I thought both came across as total flogs but the editing of reality shows can paint people in a very unflattering light.

As would I, be happy with either that is.

My thinking is already on us picking McCarton because I see no other option so I'm focused on the positives of getting Paddy.

Its not that easy. Thats why we only have jack steven pick 50ish over the last 7 years in our midfield who even resembles an a grader.

Given the saints ladder position it seems as though all saints have now turned their attention to the draft and everyone seems to have an opinion.
Given their seems to a fair amount of variations in everyone's opinion I thought it might be an idea to make a list of potential draftees (realistic ones, not getting petracca pick 1 and mccartin 21) for each of our first 4 picks. No ridiculous trades or anything like that... just our first four picks as they stand today and a list of who everyone wants for each picks. I ill get us started and happy to add everyone's input:

Pick 1 - mccartin, petracca, wright

pick 21 - ahern (may be a stretch - happy to take opinion if any chance here), Weller, Lamb, Wigg, Bampton, Kietel, Duggan, Steele

pick 39 - Miller, Gore, Johansen, McKenzie, lonie, neal-bullen

pick 57 - daniels, rose, webb, cunico, gregson, grace
I'd go something like:

Pick 1: McCartin, Petracca, Wright.

Second rounder: Hopefully there's someone with a bit of class left and we take them. Teach them how to consistently win the ball and you just never know. (Dan Hannebury was pick 30. Can you imagine that)

Third rounder: Dead eye kick with some pace.

Haven't done much second or third round research yet so won't reel off any names.

Our recruiting has been the worst in the league and statistics back that up. Our first rounders, Cripps, Lynch, McEvoy have also been poor.

Anyway, I was taking overall league not just out club. Not including F/S picks its extremely rare to find quality talls. Kurt Tippett and a few others the exception. Quality mids you find throughout the draft. Given there's obviously more mids that are in the draft, still doesn't add up tho.

Quality talls are very obvious for recruiters whereas mids can slip under the radar. We may rate a mid top 20 and get him top 60.

Burton top 2-3, Weideman top 10, Schache top 10, but no Boyd/Patton early on.
ALL over Schache next year. Taller and heavier than Weidman (197/93 to 195/88) even though he's 2 months younger, and no Filth baggage.

Kicked more goals per game this year; 19 in 10 games (1.9pg) to Weidman's 16 in 12 games (1.3pg) and has had to do it the hard way too, with his Dad passing away in 2002 when he was 5.

And as bottom agers Boyd and McCartin averaged a touch below 3 goals a game and Wright almost 2.5.

I like Duggan at around our second pick. ( If we get a tall first rounder ).
I like the sound of him too, particularly his left boot and especially since he doesn't turn 18 until December. That makes him almost a full year younger than the likes of Petracca and Brayshaw, who were both born very early in January.

Petracca was one week away from being in last year's draft and Duggan was just 3 weeks away from not being eligible to be drafted until next year!

All of whom played entirely or overwhelmingly at FF. Schache is a CHF, and a very good one.
If I was to hazard a guess, it's cos he appears to be a burly, full-chested, one-dimensional type whose 'defensive pressure' is pretty iffy.

Correct Big R?

PW had injury issues and was played in the ruck. Makes you think what he could do as a FF, the increased speed of ball movement in the AFL will suit him.
1 effort player right now.

McCartin has been pretty solid for GGS, as well. Great mark on the lead, but I don't think he's a modern footballer.

I don't hold those concerns. He wins the footy in a marking contest, quick off the mark and good below the knees. Taylor Walker and Jack Darling do alright for themselves and are similar height and build.

Just so you are aware I wasn't comparing them to next years draft crop although I prefer this years then next years. At this point in time and subject to change!
