List Mgmt. 2014 Draft Watch Thread

Im liking you fellas thinking on smaller players. I rate good skills ahead of height with todays style of footy. If the game changes to 'slower, and bombing it long' id go for tall guys. But right now, skills and speed.

I think Pickett would probably be the better choice out of the small guys now but he will most likely go top 10. Smith has fallen down the rankings a bit but I still like him and would not mind him with our third pick if he is there.

Sunny_ I saw you said your almost 100% confident we will take Lachie if available on KM thread. Where did you get such information?

Connecting the dots. We love Queenslanders on our list and he has the potential to become an elite mid. We have also invested a heap of effort and time into developing him. More so than any other Academy player before him. We wouldn't be doing that if we are not ridiculously keen.

We would be desperate that he slides to us.

Loving materas work.. Well he has half a good game then goes missing id lovd him to have a little partner in crime along side our tall timber

Should be Aaron Hall but he is missing most of the time. I have my reluctance in drafting small forwards. I prefer we draft crafty, quick, goal kicking outside players and turn them in to forwards if need be.

Nevertheless, a forward line of;

Boston/Russell, Lynch, Martin
Matera, Dixon, Day

I am happy with that but two of those have had injuries.

Lynch day Dixon all pushing 200cm n go missing in games if they even turn up at all... Martin Russell 185-190
Matera 175 still thinkn we need a quick little freak..
Hawthorns playing 3 players shorter then 180cm rioli puopolo n hartung
We're playing 1
Not saying there right.. We're wrong.. Just stating could help when the kicks into our 50 like the first 3qtrs against west coast . Matera was the only one getting goals
All I want is tackles n goals haha

I am happy with that forward line as well, but as you touched on we have no depth there. I would be happy to go after a small forward in the draft, some one who as actually played as a forward for most of their junior career and understands the role. We have tried to turn midfielders into defenders like you are suggesting with forwards and it hasn't worked, and it is pretty evident with Kolodjashnij that if you draft a player who plays a certain role as a junior they will make a better go of it at AFL level.

All key forwards go missing for parts of games. It usually is not their fault, usually delivery. Day has been down on form but has been moved to defence again. You are talking about players who have played more games than ours and play in one of the best teams in the competition.

You may have your opinion which is cool but I will just touch on how I like a forward line to be structured.

I like 3 tall forwards (one who can ruck);
- Lynch is who we build the forward line around and for his age is doing very well this year. Absolutely no complaints there and is a premier up and coming CHF.
- Day started like a house on fire but has dropped off. Is a shame but just having him down there is great for us as he takes a good defender and always provides something up the ground. Sort of player you play in to form especially given the fact that we have no other decent KPF prospects out performing him. An issue I believe we need to address with drafting another KPF project but I am not of the belief that it is dire and requires some aggressive trading for a great key forward as some suggest. He will certainly come good and doing such would be an unnecessary, reactionary move which would cause problems in the future. We need to be proactive not reactive in our list management which they have been thus far unlike GWS.
- Dixon has been pretty good since coming back from injury. Great as the deep forward target who can pinch hit in the ruck. No problems here.
- I believe our key forwards are progressing nicely. Just need some topping up with another project who could eventually give some competition to the other three and boost our ressies.

I like 2 small forwards who play up the ground as well as hit the scoreboard and one deep small forward to crumb;
- Bennell can play this role excellently when not in the midfield. Can also play deep extremely effectively.
- Boston would be a great addition playing this role. His sublime kicking inside 50 would be a boost. Needs a bit of work defensively but tracking nicely.
- Russell had a poor pre-season so hard to get a read on him but he is pretty reliable in front of goal and provides a spark up the field. Good mover in congestion just needs work on his decision making and ball use. Lacks pressure at times.
- Sumner is a project player given being taken at pick 55. When he improves his decision making and discipline he will be a great x factor. Great overhead mark. Can pressure pretty well too.
- Martin is perfect for this and will be great in this role when not in the midfield. Nothing else needs to be said about him.
- Matera has been that bright spark as the crumber and has shown he will be one of the elite small forwards of the competition. Has improved his pressure work but needs to find that next level. A lot to be happy about just needs time.

I think we could do with another genuine small. It is not really dire but yeah I agree that we could draft someone but drafting one dimensional players is often fraught with danger. The Kolodjashnij example does not really stick with me as he can play extremely effectively off a wing as he has a big tank but most pure small forwards lack a decent tank. Adding one dimensional forwards to our list will not be Clayton's priority one would think.

I tend to agree with TheJaegerBomb about one dimensional player. Modern football seems to be all about run and carry, we need the best kicks we can in the side (think of the difference KK has made) Lachie Weller is a pin point kick and has no "go home" factor so he is likely to be up high on the Suns want list.

I also think our forward line will be fine

FF: Matera Dixon Boston
HF: Martin Lynch Bennell

With Ablett and Day pinch hitting I don't think it needs any more potency

If Melbourne are resigned to losing Frawley, maybe we can use some of the cash freed up by Brown and Karmichael Hunt etc..... He'd be the icing down back as a 3rd tall as Clayton obviously identified this as an issue by recruiting Jack Leslie at 20.
We can even give Melbourne the Geelong compo pick and avoid free agency.

Yeah forgot about Ablett. He will be spending more and more time there in a couple years.

I want Frawley badly I am just concerned about salary cap ramifications given his price tag. Will watch closely.

If it came to free agency we couldn't match Melbourne's offer anyway plus Carlton, Richmond (even Hawthorn) etc have stated they have big cash to spend.
A lifestyle change, joining a young developing team, Geelong compo pick in return is our only chance really.

He is a free agent so trading isn't an option.

I really like the look of Petracca. With Hunt probably going back to league/union, Rischitelli/Abblet not getting any younger and Lonergan not able to stay on the park, It could be an idea to add some midfield depth. He's a big bodied midfielder with good skills that can add some toughness around the stoppages. Looks the goods to me. :thumbsu:

Wouldn't mind also getting Smith if he ends up sliding a bit. He has speed and toughness and could add to our small forward depth.

I am interested in Petracca but he just doesn't seem like the Clayton type pick. Problem is as well, Petracca would be really stuck behind in the twos with so many others playing his position and Lonergan in front of him too. We need classy users more than ball winners IMO. Lachie Weller would be more beneficial to us than Petracca.

Despite his disposal I still like Smith too. I would be stoked if he slipped to our second round pick.

He can enter the draft if he doesn't wish to remain at that club, which then opens up a trade.

Would have to get pretty dire for that to happen. Very rarely happens and you don't ever bank on such an occurence.

True although story on afl.com.au today says Geelong have now joined the race for him. Quotes Frawley as saying he wants to play finals, so I don't think he'll command a kings ransom as most finals teams won't have the cap room. If his motivation is success over cash, I'm sure a club like ours would appeal to him.

Possibly. We have been known to be in to him. I am hoping we have said to him we will offer him X amount and have little wiggle room but if he wants to play in a perennial finals team with ridiculous talent then that is the sacrifice. If he is not gonna take it then so be it. Moving on.

If he does however... watch out.

Most people on here seem to be missing the point of Petracca - his inside mid ability is really only the second string to his bow he is trying to develop. This bloke is first and foremost an undersized power forward (likened to a slight less athletic, but stronger Stewart Crameri) who absolutely beasted older kids last year in the TAC Cup. He could be the third/fourth tall we need to develop.

Day is our third tall. Don't really like having 4 talls as it slows you down. Having Jack Martin up there is like having a fourth tall and another small so we are sweet.

He could be handy depth but again he really is not a Clayton type pick. Not overly fussed if we don't get him but he interesting and I certainly think some team will have a nice player on their hands when he reaches the AFL.

Hi guys -

The Sandringham Dragons were kind enough to allow my Youtube show - Beyond the Boundary - to interview highly rated inside midfielder and potential top-10 draft pick Angus Brayshaw this week.

We spoke to Angus about the challenges and pressure of being a highly rated youngster, his future goals both in and outside of football, his strengths and weaknesses as a player, and much more.

It's a great watch - I'd love for you to check it out!
