2014 Potential Draftee and Trade Watch

Once again, might as well get this thread created so us regulars can make outlandish claims (like yours truly stating last year that Dawson Simpson was a dud destined for the scrapheap at the end of 2013) or re-post quotes from years gone-by to boost our, admittedly limited, BF credentials.

Once again, I'm sure we'll look to our gurus, thejester & Pure_Ownage, to lead the charge as we sort through the chaff to find the wheat.

I'll use this from back in August '13 as a way to give folks some insights into the Vic. guys being touted for year's end - http://boundforglorynews.com/2014-draft-the-first-look/

2014 is supposed to be a good one for the big boys so they'll probably generate a lot of discussion (especially if Mitch Brown fails to grab the opportunity offered him by Vardy's unfortunate knee injury or Shane Kersten's injury troubles continue to prevent us getting a look at him at senior level or Josh Walker keeps dropping chest marks and trying to kick set shots around the body from 35m in front or Joel Hamling continues to hide behind lamp posts - sorry Joel, that one might be a bit unfair).

And, in a nod to meto, I have read Darcy Hourigan has fronted for South Adelaide trimmer and fitter (Strangled Cat should be able to confirm this as the year goes on).

So meto, keep the faith, you might yet get your wish.

As for me, I'll go on record saying I already have a soft spot for Clem Smith out of WA (people who saw him at the Champs last year probably know why I like him) and, for name value alone, Bodhi Walker from Gippsland will be followed (I'll be shattered if he doesn't land somewhere, the AFL needs more Bodhis!!)

Could be a good year for the Falcons:

Among the squad of 50 is four brothers of current AFL players – including one that is a potential father-son prospect in this year’s AFL draft – the cousin of a former No.1 draft pick, two sons of ex-VFL/AFL players and the son of a current AFL coach.

Aaron Christensen, brother of Geelong premiership player Allan, has been invited back for his third season with the club after being overlooked in last year’s national and rookie drafts.

Dylan Hodge, brother of Hawthorn captain Luke, Charles Curnow, who’s brother Ed is at Carlton, and Zaine Cordy, brother of Western Bulldogs ruckman/forward Ace, will be other names watched closely by fans this season.

...

Key forward Hugh Goddard is the cousin of Essendon utility Brendon, the No.1 draft pick chosen by St Kilda back in 2002. The 195cm 17-year-old is tipped to be a first round prospect in this year’s crop and is a member of the AIS-AFL Academy squad.

James Frawley is an unrestricted free agent.

I hope like hell we at least made a pitch to his manager in the off season. We are severely lacking in quality up and coming key defenders and James is the EXACT type of player and age profile that we need going forward.

Who knows if Toohey/Hamling/kolo or even walker will make it and Lonergan won't be around forever (probably 2015 his last year).

If I was at Geelong I would be quite aggressive in making a huge play at getting James down the highway. More so than just about any other player bar Dangerfield (restricted free agent).

I hadn't given it much thought because I had assumed due to his age he'd only be RFA and that Melbourne would be able to match whatever deal came through. But having seen cause of the frontloaded contract that he's UFA - we'd be mad not to be kicking the tires.

Is that one of the quirks of the rating system? Front loaded / backloaded ? Anyway as you said if he is UFA we should at least check the hang of his dangle.

I'll definitely keep meto up to date with how young Darcy is travelling, and where applicable I will mention him in this thread - but only if his form warrants serious consideration. I'm really excited about Hourigan playing up forward for the Panthers in 2014.

Apparently because he's not in their top 25% paid due to the loading he's a UFA rather than RFA. Brutal for Melbourne if that's happened because they had to hit the cap floor in their lean years, but I guess there's no room for sentiment in football.

I hope he stays at the Dees but if not then he would probably suit our needs quite well , depending on the strength of our side.

Hawthorn supporters on BF reckon that their club should/will chase hard for Frawley's service. I'm not sure what their cap situation is like since the Buddy departure, but the thought of Frawley in a brown and gold guernsey is a scary prospect.

Frawley has to be investigated.

What do they say? "We'd be derelict in our duty" if we didn't.

But the Hawks might well have a war-chest with Franklin leaving and, if they do happen to win it again, a few of their older players might retire (Burgoyne and Mitchell are 2 that spring to mind that might be happy leaving on a high).

Probably the only thing to be excited about if you support the Panthers I'd have thought. ;)

Although I'm not that confident about the Eagles this year either, could be real boom or bust.

may not even pick football, can say first hand, he is a very talented cricketer, could very easily play grade cricket for geelong

The Falcons website has Dylan Hodge info as

DOB: 6 March 1996

Height: 187cm

Weight: 98kg

Previous Club: Colac
Mmm sound like a tank , anyone seen him play? Id have to say the idea of picking up a brother of a Hawthorn Champion appeals on many levels , after all its been done before;)

And speaking of brothers , is Bundy Junior an option for us , would he be the type we were after or would we just look at him due to brother of brother.

And while we are talking brothers , trade theoretical. We have cap space , we have the trade/pick to get it done... If we the chance to bring a brother to the club thru trade which brother would you pick Menzel or Kolodjashnij

Probably Menzel at this stage. Haven't seen alot of KK

I'll be expecting a big year from Troy if he is to track along the same as his brother. KK is supposed to be an exceptional talent just like Troy, but without having seen a great deal of either I would probably go for KK purely for the fact that I'd be less concerned about his knees long term.

Both seem to be extremely talented (Captain Obvious I know) and I know the theoretical says we could get either but in the real world KK is probably a bit more getable , due to the amount of talent at GC.
On a pure talent for talent basis I think Menzel may be the kid Id want. "Menzel" Goal kicking talent is hard to beat but I say this with confidence , if I could trade our R1 pick , right now for KK at years end id do it.( yes I know its a strong draft ) Look at Guthrie , Thurlow etc and one just knows he would be a great addition, and having JK and KK along side each other in the backline would be deliciously mean on the commentators.

Kade.

As Luke Darcy would say, "I like the way he goes about it".

Actually, it is more an age thing for me. I know it is only a few years but I think you get better value with Kade for what you have to give up.

OK since you mentioned it what do you think we would have to cough up. GC must sort reach a saturation point soon , how many good kids can they find a spot for (he asks hopefully) Im thinking R1 min depending on where we finish ( I suppose Tyson would be a good comparison). The trouble is they don't need any fringe players. Hard deal to get done.

When we drafted Jake, most of us thought now we need to go after the brother. From all reports it seems Jake has the ideal attitude, the type you hope you're getting. Kade I think has the same single minded focus and commitment.
I'd like to see it happen.

Agree .Just how to make it happen is the question. Are we ready as a group to accept pain for gain. I look at Omera and say why didn't we get more serious but then who would it have cost us ..... Duncan? Motlop?Christensen? And GC have a heap of kids with talent they probably don't need solid players..in fact im not sure what would interest them. Defenders? Ironically they would probably be interested in JK to go up there.
R1 pick and and kid with 50 odd games Im thinking. Ouch

I reckon they'd be the ones making the choice or choices, not us, or there wouldn't be a trade. we could try to influence, but that's about it.
Hey! you can only try.
