That would be so awesome if Dodo's been given a deadline!

It's amazing what a frenzy the Essendon folk have worked themselves into over pick 5. They won't even hear of them not ending up with it. They are just stating it as an absolute fact and certainty that they will get it. It's like they've all been brainwashed!

I don't think anybody needs to stress. I'm sure if we give up pick 5 it'll be for a player that's worth it and not Carlisle.

Anyway not sure if it's been mentioned but here's something else to chew on:

Would rather pick 5 then Carlisle, but hey that just me
Me too. Teams have won flags with fairly average forward lines, fairly average back lines but never a fairly average midfield (at least not this millennium).

What does it mean for how the first round might look? That might depend on who ends up with the picks, with many expected to be shuffled in a frenzied trade period. But we know plenty of the names who will be right at the top: Weitering, Schache, Mills, Hopper, Parish, Kennedy, Curnow and Weideman. Bids seem most likely to come for Mills in the first four or five picks and for Hopper and Kennedy about the same spot. But should GWS acquire Collingwood's pick seven as part of the Adam Treloar deal (they already hold No.8), there's a chance the Giants could get through their first two picks before a bid on Kennedy comes. That would be the dream result for GWS under the new bidding system.

That last sentence there is interesting. I wonder if GWS could work their way into picks high enough so they have two first rounders above the bids. If Carlton are able to get their hooks into Tomlison then maybe GWS could work out a deal that gets them pick 1. Combine that with pick 5 from us in the 3 way with Freo for McCarthy and their draft might look like this:

Pick 1, 5, Hooper, Kennedy, PLUS any other academy kids they want with left over points (they'll have more than enough).

If we believed that we were going to be able to get said character with the pick we trade down to then we'd be mad not to do it. Might be more difficult to get one of those two GWS picks if they think they'll have enough points with later picks to be able to use one or both as "live picks" though.
Following from my earlier post, it would be interesting that there were 9 players named. Funny, that club at Pick 10 wouldn't happen to be a northern, expansion club with multiple first round picks, would they?

As for GWS, it would be a bit of a hassle if a club needed a certain number of picks for players they will pick up at a discount, but wouldn't it be awfully convenient if said club could 'trade up' into a super-high end of the draft such that they could cover bids with multiple lower, shitty picks and take the super-high pick to the draft? It would also help if that club were to trade out players like Lachie Plowman, Liam Sumner, Jacob Townsend, Tom Bugg and Jed Lamb for those lower picks...

They may have yet another chance to troll and make a mockery of the rest of the competition and dominate the top of the draft.

Who's bright idea was GWS anyway!

It will be a terrible look for the game if GWS end up with most of the top 10 yet again and Gold Coast also have a stack of the top 20 picks.

Has any decent journo asked Dildoro what the bombers will do if pick 5 isn't on the table? Would love to see his response. I'm tipping they haven't threatened the PSD because they know they will get nothing and they would hate to gift their arch rival in the blues with a player like Carlisle. I honestly think we'll see a second rounder and steak knives. Bombers will have to budge late in the trade piece.

ESSENDON wants draft pick No. 5 for Jake Carlisle and has promised to send the star defender to St Kilda when the AFL trade period opens at 10am on Monday if the Saints deliver.

The Bombers are building a draft bonanza as they replenish their list under new coach John Worsfold and should finish the exchange period with four picks inside 25 — their strongest position in draft history.

Essendon — which already holds picks four and 23 — is confident of landing Melbourne’s pick 25 for Jake Melksham and is determined to prise No. 5 from the Saints.

The Bombers — excluded from the first two rounds of the 2013-14 drafts as part of the drugs sanctions — have not had four picks in the top-25 since 1998.

They have activated just five top-25 selections since 2009.

The clubs could be headed for an impasse with the Saints last week hesitant to part with No. 5 but Dons list chief Adrian Dodoro told the Herald Sun on Sunday a pick later in the first round would not satisfy.

“It’s pick five, which will eventually be No. 7 or 8 with the academy boys anyway,” he said.

“We’re firm it should be pick five. We think that’s fair — he’s our player and we want to retain him.

“We haven’t received an official offer from the Saints yet so hopefully (today) we get one. But that’s the cleanest, fairest way of doing it.

“He’s 197cm, he’s the best key-position player available and he walks into their starting line-up and plays centre half-back against the best forwards in the comp.”

Dodoro started informal talks on the two deals with St Kilda’s Ameet Bains and Melbourne’s Todd Viney last week.

Dodoro was confident the Bombers would beat Sydney to free agent Matthew Leuenberger’s signature and said a new deal for Brent Stanton could be ticked off as soon as Tuesday.

But he said uncontracted halfback Courtenay Dempsey would have to sit down with Worsfold this week to discuss his future.

Dempsey is sweating but tipped to stay.

Dodoro said attracting picks was the club’s priority and Worsfold would be included in trade talks.

“It’s fair to say this is a really important draft coming up for the club,” he said.

“We haven’t been to the draft in a couple of years, so we’d like to definitely bring on some quality young players.”

The industry has long rated this year’s draft one of the poorest but Dodoro said the weekend’s combine at Etihad Stadium had changed opinions.

“Our guys in particular are really bullish about the quality and the depth,” he said.

“There’s some quality kids and testing has been really good — you’ve just got to do your homework.

Dodoro said Leuenberger, 27, had always been the club’s top ruck target.

“We went from the best stoppage team in the competition to the worst stoppage team this year after we lost Paddy Ryder,” he said.

“(Leuenberger) has a lot of good footy ahead of him. He’s got his body right, ruckman mature late and he’s got the opportunity to be our No. 1 ruck in partnership with Tom Bellchambers.”

The Demons have tabled Melksham a lucrative four-year offer while Carlisle chose the Saints ahead of Carlton.

Helps the Saints apologies to Carlisle when he ends up in the PSD proof Dodoro would not accept any deal best part is when we announce we have traded pick 5 for something like pick 9 and 16 and take both to the draft

Dodoro isnt intrested in a deal cause unless he gets five he is gone next year

Damn, I would hate for them to dominate the draft again and add to the stacked midfield, I mean what a shame if the likes of Josh Kelly and Jack Steele were left unhappy in the NEAFL... :P

What about Matho! Either way though I'll back in the club and see what happens. Hopefully we still have a top 10 pick though.

So what's the gist of that article? I take it Essendon are trying to play this out in public to try and get a groundswell of support for him being worth pick 5 and to pile the pressure on us to part with it.
100%, and it's shitting me that it seems to be rubbing off.

Our media has been awesome this year but we definitely need some more media plants to get a Saints-friendly agenda out there. It's something we really lack, Brett Anderson is about it.

I don't think Bains or any of our crew are likely to be influenced by Dodo's shit talking in the media. We appear to be far to prepared, rational and well thought to allow crap like that to make a difference.

If their supporter group is anything to go by it certainly is. Like I said earlier, it's like they've been brainwashed.

I would almost say we need to not trade pick 5 to Essendon under any circumstances.

To be honest I never knew to much about Ross, and only recently looked into him because his name had been thrown up a heap of times by Saints posters. I don't think he's a dud like other ess supporters have been saying, I see solid improvement for every year he's been in the system which is about what you ask for.. you don't expect every kid to come out and be a chris judd type.

If we do end up with him and a first (even if it's late) then I'd be happy because I see potential in him. But as you said, I can 100% see why you want to keep him.
Seb was ready to explode prior to this season and had a really good preseason, but ripped his hammy in a NAB challenge game - he is much more than steak knives imo.

As much as getting Mathieson this year could edge Seb out - I am also pretty scared that he will do a Kennedy and suddenly explode into a jet if we trade him out.

Remember he was a first round draft pick, even if that was pick 25 in his draft year! So therefore due to a late first rounder back in 2011 being 25/26, I will take your offer and give Essendon pick 24 and Seb. ;)

You're a very smart man Rahul.
