Talked to the Lions recruiter tonight, gave away little but said this

Reckons because McCartin is on the wrong side of 195cm won't be able to impact packs I50 in the way Boyd/Hogan will so will need to work on his tank so he can play up the ground where he can use his size more effectively

Can't believe I'm saying this, but 194cm - though, yes, on the 'wrong' side of 195cm - is going to make absolutely ZERO difference to Paddy's ability to impact a pack.

If the Melbourne and St Kilda website stats can be believed there is only 1cm between McCartin and Hogan (194 and 195). Paddy does need to work on his tank but all young forwards do except a few freaks (Tomlinson).

If somebody came knocking about Hickey we'd definitely listen but it'd have to be a very, very good offer. We would be wary of leaving our ruck stocks so bare again. Billy Longer is and will be our number 1 ruckman and I can't see that changing for the next 8 years.

I'm very happy over the thoughts on Ross. I have stuck up for him for a while, knowing those bigger mids can take time like Jobe and JPK, he can be a beauty though.

I'm well aware that big Jase isn't quite there yet, but for those who don't know, he had 60 hit outs on the weekend. Thats massive in anyone's language, could Lewi and Holmes form enough of a back up to allow a trade for Hickey? It would have to be a first alone I would expect, not a two for one.

Our second for a first could happen for White, Wright, Saunders or Murdoch I reckon. White (fitness/competitiveness), White/Saunders (kicking efficiency) and Murdoch (body) all have what could be considered a downside to their games which might hold them back as we continue to get elite talents through the door and onto our list. They all have an upside which could be considered enough for another club to take a chance on them though.

That was my counter argument to him but he said with the way the game is going you need one monster forward and he doesn't see McCartin being that monster forward.

Paddy can play up the ground. He didn't get to much due to the nature of the U18 competition including anti flooding rules, as well as injuries and his importance to his u18 teams close to goal, but he can work his way up the ground. Even I didn't really buy it until post Champs, but he can play up the ground. IMO he will crash packs, don't know if he'll take the huge grabs regularly that Boyd, Casboult, Patton and Cloke do/will but his strength is his leading and game smarts.

The fact that McCartin is flexible and agile enough to get up the ground I only see as a positive. We know he can crash packs, have seen it in the 18s and VFL. May take some time but he will be fine, he is a very good contested mark..

I would rather a bloke who can switch it up than a Tom Boyd who can only switch it by being handed the red vest

Agree with this. And this is also a quote from Richo:

Bruce doesn't look like one to crash packs, looks more like the mobile type with a massive tank that can turn opponents and work them over

Hogan > Boyd > McCartin, but I think Paddy will overtake Boyd as Boyd is a soft ****.
Hogan a superstar, Paddy nowhere near his ability, also keeping in mind Hogan has been in the system for three years.

Interesting comments, I wonder if this is the consensus amongst recruiting teams. I don't really get this mentally. There are not many "monster" full forward types dominating at the moment. Certainly Cloke and Hawkins are superstars, but who else? Cloke also has a massive tank so it is not like he sits on his arse in the goal square all game, definitely works his opponent over aerobically. Daniher and Boyd have potential to be good players, but they certainly have their limitations. In my opinion, the best forwards are usually those that have a diverse skill set. Riewoldt, Cameron, Pavlich, Roughead, Buddy, Gunston etc. Hogan will be a gun, not because he is your "monster" type but because he can get you on the lead, on the ground or through strong body work. Just a very difficult match up.

It just seems strange that a big monster full forward is a requirement given the strong focus modern footy has with forward pressure. I am not saying this just because he is on our list, but I would have thought Josh Bruce would be your prototype for what recruiters are looking for in a big forward going forward. He still crashes the packs, has good hands, can get you on the lead or one on one, but most importantly when the ball hits the deck he fights like an animal to lock it in or win possession back.

Give me a big bloke with agility and a defensive mindset over a massive Patton or Boyd type who don't make their opponent work hard aerobically. I am sure these guys will be very good players, but they are very one dimensional. Boyd looks really dangerous in the air, but he seriously has the turning circle of a bus. I am not sure this is something he can get that better at.

He will have some good games, but gee he is going to get carved up on the rebound by some quality attacking defenders throughout his career. For instance, Rance had 28 possessions to Boyd's 4 when they played on each other. I was at the game with my nephew who is a Tigers supporter, and Rance ran off him at will. He paid him zero respect, you could not be any more dominant as a KPD, I shudder to think what Scarlett would have done to him in his prime. I understand it is your second season and everything, but you just can't be getting carved up that badly. The point of my rant is it is often a double edged sword with these big monster types, if they are not being dangerous they get exposed the other way pretty quickly.

Ive had a few people who know their footy well and support other teams quite clearly state that Paddy is going to be a monster when his experience and fitness is up to scratch. Just has the football brain that knows exactly where to be at the right time. Hell, just look at the two games he has played this year and how many marks he dropped. You dont drop marks without getting to them in the first place.

Look at it this way, a LOT of people were hailing Petracca as the future Judd etc.. and our recruitment team who has so far nailed 80% of our picks in the last few years still took Paddy in front of him.

I can't be any more certain that Paddy is going to be a fine KPF. He was superb at U/18 level, particularly as an underager. His attitude to learn and succeed is first rate.
Give me a genuine, extremely smart forward with sticky hands over a less talented "monster" any day.

Just to add to this.... Paddy kicked 3 goals on the weekend from 5 touches. That indicates a smart forward who doesn't need it many times because when he does get it he is in a position to hurt you. He can also provide the roughead rover like relief in time and is fantastic below the knees. When joey and nick think he will be something special then I trust them and I wanted petracca more then anyone last year.

Wait until we build him a tank and some size. Him and Bruce will be a scary tandem.

Btw haven't posted much lately as I am currently in the states... Disappointing about shiel but keep in mind that it's a 2 year deal on considerably less coin then what was offered to come back home. Club would be confident of a different outcome in 2 years time he decides to walk.

We will hit the draft unless something special becomes available. Club very impressed with parish the last few weeks.

Also keep an eye on the sun's. If there is an exodus we will come out to play. Club is keeping a very close eye!

Too impact a pack in the forward 50 it's not so much height as it is size of the player sticky hand and the threat your going to hurt someone when you hit it. Barry hall made a fantastic living.off this and I always likened paddy to Barry. Just needs a few off seasons to develop. But has all the attributes and then some.

I too wanted Petracca more than anyone, but happy with Mc Cartin because the guy really understands the demands of the game, the word "character " comes to mind .
Lots of really talented players don't make it because they won't do the hard yards (diet / training /meetings)
You just know Paddy will, Listens to instruction , you can see the body language at the huddles and the
way he conducts himself with other teammates.

Yeah that was my first thought with Shiel - only two years. It fits in nicely with when we'll be starting to really impact the the final eight too!

I'm keen on Parish as from what I've read he fits the bill perfectly a la Lachie Whitfield

Who would you want from the Suns if they became available? For mine - KK would be nice but kinda like Rory Thompson as that missing key defender. Could you imagine Delaney, Goddard, Thompson as the key defenders with Lee as cover? Wouldn't mind Prestia either....can't see it happening though. The AFL wouldn't let it happen, they'd step n and right the ship including ensuring players stay....
