lol the PP talk, we have broken almost every aspect on how to get it as they have frame worked

improved on wins(I'm just assuming we own 1 more game for the rest of the year)
improved %
one of the aspects is a bright future with kids which we have

good luck asking for one

Increasing the number of wins doesn't exclude you from it. It's based of the number of wins over the last few years. Going from 3 wins to 4 doesn't mean you wont get it cause you've 'improved'.

Same goes for % (although we will probably heavily improve in this area this year).

As previously noted we still have less young talent on the list than a number of teams.

most of your points are countered in the letter below

http://www.afl.com.au/news/2014-09-23/no-priority-pick-for-demons
all quotes below are from the letter from the AFL to the dees after their request

THE AFL Commission has denied Melbourne's request for a priority selection after its sixth bottom-four finish in eight seasons.
we have had 2, 3 if we finish bottom 4 this year
Melbourne released a statement on Tuesday evening accepting the AFL's decision.

In a written response to the Demons, the League detailed a number of reasons why the club should not receive a priority selection, including.

Its 2014 season was an improvement on 2013, winning two more games and improving its percentage from 54.1 per cent to 68.4;
our 2015 % is 80.1 compared to 60.8% last year

- After round 15 in 2014, Melbourne was 15th on the ladder with four wins and a percentage of 78.1, before a poor ending to the season;
we are 14th after 11 this year and have a % of 2% higher than the dees

- Melbourne beat two finalists in 2014 (Essendon and Richmond) and it lost three games by less than nine points;
dogs? inevitable freo? we may actually qualify for 1/8 aspects
- The Demons have a high level of young talent including Jesse Hogan, Jimmy Toumpas, Jack Viney, Jay Kennedy-Harris, Christian Salem and Dom Tyson;
our kids are better and run deeper no need to name names IMO
- Melbourne may be able to trade Mitch Clark for another player or a draft pick and will receive a compensation pick if they lose any players to free agency.
have no idea how the work out who we could trade, we could trade billings or we could trade steven but this point is bizarre to me, might be more well known to understand who we could trade out
Melbourne lost its final 10 games in 2014, winning just four in total, and lodged its request for special assistance after being toppled by Greater Western Sydney in round 21 at the MCG.
No ones wasting their breath, this is what this board is for, discussions and possible permutations.
I would suggest if we don't win another game we will definitely get one, however highly unlikely that is.
We basically have a full list and just beat Melbourne on the weekend, the week before we looked out of our depth vs Hawthorn, some perspective is definitely needed.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Melbourne_Football_Club_tanking_scandal - That's why the Dees didn't get a PP even if their Win:Loss indicated that they should.

Our current win:loss and % are not set in stone.

We haven't beating a top 8 team this year and probably wont.

Jesse Hogan = effectively pick 1
Jimmy Toumpas = pick 4
Jack Viney = F/S that should have been a high pick
Jay Kennedy-Harris = pick 40 and has only played 5 games this year
Christian Salem = pick 9
Dom Tyson = 3

That point was essentially saying "You've had enough high end picks, you get no more". As previously noted we have below average top 30 drat picks.

The Calrk/FA thing was clearly about the Frawley compo they would get which would give them picks 2 and 3 so the AFL didn't want to give them pick 4 as well

i don't think theirs a point arguing with you if you won't change your opinion.

Rahul, our mate Tom Templeton racked up another spot in the Bests with 22 possessions (72% eff.), 10 handball receives, 2 tackles, 1 mark and a goal.

Surely he'd be worth a late or rookie pick; good size (183cm), built like a brick ****house with a blistering set of wheels... Would be very handy in our midfield group.

taylor grace 2.0? :p:p

taylor grace 2.0? :p:p
Maybe, but Taylor was a bit of a butcher, whereas I think Tom's problem is the perception that he doesn't impact the game enough, or maybe doesn't get enough ball; not sure.

This year he averages:
20.1 possessions (65.75% eff.)
8.8 handball receives
3.2 marks (0.3 contested)
2.3 tackles
1.1 goals

That's pretty solid without blowing you away, but I reckon as an outside speed merchant he'd be worth a spot.

i don't think theirs a point arguing with you if you won't change your opinion.

And I don't think there's any point in arguing with you if you refuse to recognize the context that the Demon's PP was denied under.

Most of those points you think will go against us wont.

if taylor was a butcher then the rest of his game was pathetic, his kicking and decision making was his best skills.

yeah i can't really comment on temps tho don't know anything about him

take away the demons aspects and we just dont qualify for the framework of a PP, i think your stuck on the demons example and can't see the framework..

i counted 1 the fact we haven't beaten a finals team and the other one was the mitch clark trade out part which is unknown for us this early in the year.

so 2/7? prove to me otherwise

I've noticed Templeton is a favorite of yours Mr Barrels. I had a little bit to do with him towards end of last season. He's a really grounded kid, and it was a huge kick in the guts when he missed out and a large number of his Rebels and school teammates got drafted.
He had a massive pre season, came back looking like a body builder! He's had a solid season, will surely be on a Rookie List at worst come end of year.

Yeah have to agree here - Saints in a very different position to Demons who had had countless top 10 picks in the preceeding years. We have not. We have been bottom 3 for 3 years (if we end up 3rd bottom this year) with a lack of top draft picks etc. I'm not sayin we will get one but we will be able to put forward a good case to get one, especially if we win 5 games or less for the season. Although I think it would be an end of first round pick which would still be handy...

lol. What. How am I stuck on the Demons example? You're the one that came in here quoting points directly from it to show how we wont be eligible under their example. I'm telling you how we wouldn't be excluded under those criteria.

If you only look at win:loss and % it still doesn't exclude us. We won 9 games total in 2013 &4 with an average % of 71.6.

You do realize that this whole conversation started when I suggested that if we don't win another game for the year that we could be eligible for a PP? Right?

If that happens, you add in another 4 wins this year (making it 13 out of 66) and a % that would almost certainly be less than 80%. That's hardly enough wins to exclude us. Especially when you consider there are 2 more teams in the comp these days and the 2006-12 PP rules were 4 wins a season (prior to that it was 5).

The fact that the Dees were shit over 6 seasons is irrelevant because the requirement almost certainly isn't for 6 years of shit. They didn't get one cause of the tanking scandal and the expansion clubs.

Stop stealing my picks, Barrels :P. But seriously if we take our third pick to the draft, I'd use it on Tom Templeton, he's worth a crack with our lack of pace.

I really want to like your post for sheer effort and research alone.
But I just can't because I just don't like the outcome if correct.
If true we should have applied for one last year. FFS, the Dees had how many???

In modern day football with free agency we certainly don't need a priority pick to be a real contender, although it would be handy and all premiers from the last decade have had PP or father-sons, free agency can easily compensate for these.

The main problem is that while not everyone had access to PP and F/S picks everyone has access to FA.

I do agree that a PP doesn't make or break our next flag push. However, it sure as hell would help! Especially in a year where it looks like we could get two top quality mids with picks 3&4 and they would have almost the right amount of development before we start to contend.

player comparison or skill set comparison that us who don't know him can go off?

Although it can be argued that FA makes it easier for top teams to stay on top longer as they are the teams who are attracting FAs.

Gil actually stated that himself & commented that they need to find a way for struggling teams to rebuild quicker.

Who knows what will happen between now & October. To say categorically either way what the AFL will decide is folly.

Haven't got a definite answer yet but have heard Bailey Rice definitely leaning towards us and that he won't cost any more than our third rounder.
His modest Champs form ensures that with our third rounder being early in the round, even if somebody bids on him with a mid to late second rounder we will use no more than a third.
Would be a good result for the club in a Draft that doesn't go too deep.

I dont think we will get a priority pick... but we got one in josh bruce. :)

My concern is that our four wins this year were built on riewoldt dempster joey fisher(when he played). How do we replace these guys... sure paddy for nick. I dont think it would wreck our culture to ensure we get pick 4 at minimum if we rate parish and co so highly.

Rahul great argument about PP but also look at the flipside.... melbourne carlton and us didnt win a flag

as richo pointed out he's fine if roo wins the BnF this year and 2nd is tags etc as long as the rest of the list is improving around him he's happy

Does anyone have a profile on Rice. I dont know anything about him
