I was going to post this earlier in the season but thought maybe just maybe we could sneak another one.

Now it is pretty clear, how the season rolled on that our gameplan for the year was not up to scratch. The same was the case in 2009 and it took until 2011 for us to realise it. This year the game plan hasn't worked well either and we've been scratchy for most the year.

Throughout the year we kept losing the contested possession count but were able to scrape through a few close wins due to our experience/silky skills/ luck. Those many close wins veiled the fact that our game plan of focusing on uncontested and neglecting contested football wasn't a winning game plan. The past month of football we lost 4/5 games and 5/5 contested possessions, most with a minus 40-50 differential.

This neglect of contested football i believe was a gamble hoping to anticipate that the further reduced interchange rotations would significantly open up the game and make the outside game more important than the inside game. Whilst this became true to an extent, the need for a strong inside game is still clearly very relevant.

To say, as clarkson did throughout the year, that we didn't care about contested possessions and then end the game being thumped in contested possessions and losing 4/6 at the end of the season and beign smashed in contested possessions in most those games especially where we lost is testament to that.

Clarko and Co. I hope you guys can rectify the game plan to once again have a real crack at the flag (possibly our last real chance for the next few years)

This team has been great over the last decade or so and we are all very fortunate to be able to follow such a great team. But just as we got complacent after 2008, we need to avoid repeating the mistakes of the past and take a hard look at what we did wrong this year and how to do better next year otherwise 2017 might also resemble 2010... heaven forbid!

Chill out man, shit will sort itself out. Once JOM and Mitchell come into our midfield and we draft (yes even him) Tyrone a ruffy replacement who we missed big time.

We're fine. In Clarko we trust, feel a bit like Geelong of 2014. No doubt we will bounce back and we will make contested possession count again.

Just quietly, football isn't as simple as winning contested possessions.

Our midfield needs bolstering, we know that.

Clarkson knows that.

In clarko we trust indeed and I'm sure he will address the issues with gameplan over the off season. He is very good at learning from past mistakes. I don't believe it's solely a playing list issue despite use desperately missing our main target rough up forward and a bit more midfield support/depth for our vets.

Since the 2008 flag, there has been subtle variances in the way Clarko has coached the team, always tweaking and looking for ways to remain ahead of the pack. I believe this has been a major contributor to winning 3 flags in a row. This year, it doesn't appear to have worked in our favour, but I have faith Clarko would have identified the problem. As posted earlier, there is more to football these days than contested possession.

We played all year without our full forward who also goes into the midfield when we need to win contested possession; without our CHF for most of it; undersized down back; and UNABLE to win contested possessions. Don't blame the game plan for a personnel issue. If we recruit well for inside midfielders and regain a target up forward while freeing up Gunston, then our game plan will again prove the competition's best

Nothing like 2009 at all. We got everything we could out of the list this year. The list just isn't good enough or deep enough anymore.
Comparing the two seasons; The way I see it is that the core group who have led us through 2009 hasn't changed a heap. That means that while they'll get through another couple of years perhaps they'll not be there to tack additional recruits onto in the coming years. We need to find young quality.

Reminds me a lot more or 2010 where we started off crap and had to change the game plan to basically grind out a series of small to medium sized wins to make it to the finals. It was a defensive game plan because we had obvious holes with a lack of key defender, etc.

This year is the same. Part of the reason we weren't putting sides away was because clarkson had built a game plan to protect our weakness (midfield this time rather than backline) which meant wins weren't huge.

Losing a semi by 5 goals means you're way off premiership contention. Eyes are on next year.

2016 = 2014 geelong, same poor % which doesn't lie and both out in straight sets.
You could even say both teams over achieved as they somehow got the double chance yet looked ordinary during the season.
A very good season 2016 by the mighty Hawks.

OP analogy would be better if picked 2010. Clarko hasn't always got it right but he learns and improves.

I've felt it's been our forward pressure that's been lacking this year. Opposition seem to run it out too easily. I think our small forwards have been forced to play tall because of our lack of tall options. I'd rather them kicking less goals and creating more pressure.

2016=2016
We were undone by the last few years of success plus key injuries and illness to the Big Rough.

I don't believe the game plan we ended up with was the one we planned to use all year.

When Lake and Hale were retired we obviously had plans to replace at least one with a ready made player at trade time, this didn't come off.

Then Rough went from playing to missing time to missing this year and maybe next, add in long term injuries to Schoey (unforseen) Spang (likely) and Fitz (unforseen) and we were in trouble.

Stratton wasn't 100% and that injury I think tipped us over.

Losing Cegs on the eve if finals and Burton during finals on top of a few players being cooked by circumstances and it was just a bridge too far but a monumental effort.

Closest parallels to me are 2012, scratchy form, racing until the end for top 4, injuries at the wrong time of year and players limping into finals.

Clarko admitted that the game has changed a bit in his presser.

I think a factor that hurt us (among many) is that the gameplan the past 2 seasons shifted to a heavy focus on uncontested possession and tackling.

When it was working last year, this style allowed us to take the ball back from our opposition and hurt them with quick counterattacks.

This year the umpiring changed and allowed players to delay returning the ball or hold up players who had marked the ball (for all teams).

It became very apparent to me in the North game (at the G') that they were blatantly just lying on our players or the ball so we had to hold us up.

This meant we were heading into more contested marking and possession situations which was exposed as a major weakness.

A few dodgy threads popping up lately (Except the 'S' thread. Boy that was a great read)

I tend to trust folks like Clarkson, Fagan, Rattan, Carroll, etc; to know exactly what they are doing. We know we need a couple more classy midfielders (Mitchell and O'Maera) that's fairly obvious to most people.

We didn't have a horror run with injuries this year (ala Doggies; which makes their achievements even more impressive) but we did have key structure players missing at times. We got invaluable experience into younger players and will look to build our future around them.

I think some people just need to learn that you can't win everything. We've had a great run, and I'm all for having discussions and opinions on certain aspects, but this poor attitude towards losing really gets under my skin

This times 1,000,000

The changes even from last year are massive.

Fitz for Hale
No idea who played Lakes Role
Hartung for Suckling
Sicily for Rough

Then add half a dozen blokes playing like a busted arseh*le + half a dozen blokes losing a yard

Gameplan has been amazing as always just to get he Hawks this far. Personal is lacking.

Another point, I reckone this was evident last year (hindsight) and the use of Rough to plug every gap imaginable, including midfield was massive. Rough left a massive hole and not just in the forward line.

Lake left a massive hole with contested marking. Contested marking was the key thing that spiked for the Threepeat IMO. And now it is gone again.

Hawks should be forever grateful that West Coast shat the bed and the 2015 AFL grand final was played on terms the Hawks could compete with. The QF wasn't played on those terms. Last night was not played on those terms.

GWS dominate is with run and spread. Melbourne beat us with run and spread. Bulldogs did the same. It is our kryptonite and everyone now knows.

It is all personal and there is nothing Clarko could have done.

we had a lot of injuries in 2009 which is why i am comparing 2016 to 2009.
In 2009 we blamed injuries for how the year played out and realised it was gameplan which was the issue in 2010 (not massive problems with it, just tweaks required).

This year we had some big injuries as well especially forward and midfield depth, but our gameplan also needed to be improved (as clarkson admitted in his presser). I think the result will be more like 2010/2011 in that the boys will adapt pretty quickly and make the tweaks needed to put themselves in a good position to have another crack at it next year.

Awesome post

How are we suppose to win contested possessions when we had a different team from previous years and young players coming in and out all year.
We did fantastic to even finish top 4 when in reality we should had finish bottom top 8 at best..
And to question Clarko after what he's done to our club is just silly to put it nicely
