One of the most exciting players in this years draft
He said himself that he probably won't ever have the body to play as a full time midfielder & compared himself to a Cyril Rioli/Jack Martin

Wouldn't need to be for us, High half fwd pinch hitting in the middle. Has such good goal sense and balance it wouldn't matter. Doubt we would have access to him and we would probably prefer an Ainsworth being from vic anyway. Not sure what I'd like us to get but generally more goal kicking power as depth would be nice. Ruck depth also, this draft seems to have a few good options that I'd draft third round maybe second given our list quality.

I doubt we will move up in the draft. Much more likely to trade out of the first round completely to be honest.No need to after the drafting of Stringer and Bonti, Macrae, Trading in Toyd and grabbing Libba as a father son. Further improvements to our depth are what is probably required at this stage plus any trade pieces necessary.

Surely we'd want to add more top end talent, rather than depth? Knock borderline players out of the 22 with some real quality rather than add to our 20-28. I can definitely see us trading out to move up in the draft.

I'm sure that I have heard we tried to trade up in one of the past few drafts, but it fell through. Additionally our guys seem to like taking risks (as history shows).
Having too many quality players is not such a bad thing.

They might even be the future trade bait for that player that you DO need?

I think depending on how Roughead and Campbell go this year we won't have to trade for a ruck. Just draft one of the many rucks that are part of this crop.

Like Kerr out of the talls early and McCluggage out of the smalls.

I agree, the ruckmen in this crop look fairly talented. If one suits our game plan then I hope we pounce. What attracts you to McCluggage?

Pre reqs for our side now almost sit at just clean under pressure/in congestion, tackle and defend well in the contest and offer versatility or potential versatility. And have good character qualities.

Also running ability imo our recent draftees in the most part are very good runners.

With the interchange cap the weight of consideration there would have slightly increased. I don't think we will take Schoenfeld types though just for their running ability if they don't fit the other requirements first. It is why Daniel was such an astute pick especially where we got him. No question marks at all on his running, attitude, cleanliness in tight or willingness to put pressure on.

Nah, we pick natural footballers who are good runners not just good runners. Look at our last couple of batches of national draft mids: McLean, Webb, Dale, Daniel, Dunkley, Williams apart from maybe Dunks they are all running types.

MIDFIELDER Will Brodie has again stamped himself as a potential early pick at this year's draft with another strong showing for the NAB AFL Academy in its 15-point loss to Geelong's VFL side.

A week after winning best-afield honours in the Academy's loss to Werribee's VFL team, the Murray Bushrangers on-baller again controlled the midfield in the Academy's 10.9 (69) to 8.6 (54) loss at Simonds Stadium on Saturday.

Brodie gathered a team-high 22 disposals, had three clearances, four rebound-50s and showed his courage in the air to match it with the more mature VFL opposition, which included a handful of Geelong's AFL-listed players.

Gold Coast academy prospect Brad Scheer also performed well, kicking two goals from 11 disposals to be awarded the best player for the national Academy.

Hugh McCluggage continued his impressive start to the season with 11 disposals and two goals, and showed his evasiveness and composure through traffic on several occasions. Sam Petrevski-Seton was classy, particularly in the first half, while defender Alex Witherden (11 disposals) and Josh Rotham (three marks) also contributed.

It was a much more competitive effort from the Academy a week after being blown away by Werribee, with Geelong's VFL team only really looking comfortable winners towards the end of the game, which had shortened 23-minute quarters.

The contest was the end-point of a busy 10-day camp in Melbourne for the group of 2016 draft prospects, and the last time they will come together as an Academy team after a program that for many has lasted nearly 18 months.

The evenness across the Academy's two VFL hit-outs underlined how many view this year's draft crop, with nobody yet to take a hold as the likely No.1 pick. In previous years by this stage the likes of Tom Boyd, Jacob Weitering and Lachie Whitfield had been anointed as the likely first selection of their respective years, but this season there are several contenders.

One such player, Ben Ainsworth, didn't play on Saturday as he manages a knee injury.

Geelong would have liked the showing from first-year midfielder James Parsons, himself a graduate of the AFL Academy, who gathered 19 disposals to claim his side's best player award.

George Horlin-Smith continued his push for senior selection with 30 disposals and seven clearances, while Michael Luxford had 24 touches and gave good zip throughout the contest.
