I prefer McLuggage too, but individual accolades won at u18s level don't exactly correlate to the best prospects every year. If you're going to use them, then McGrath averaged 33 touches a game, was great at the champs, won the medal in the GF with 38 touches and clearly has the scope to be more than just a run of the mill back flanker.
Basically, one of the biggest games of u18 was vic metro vs vic country. Vic Metro came from a fair way behind to win in the last 5 minutes or so. Big reason for doing it was McGrath shutting down Ainsworth (who had kicked 4 goals in 3rd quarter), providing goal assisting rebounds, high flying marks, etc. So, he was the moneyman there along with Taranto and Venables. Then again, against SA, vic metro came from behind to win. Again, it was McGrath, Taranto and Venables who were critical. Vic metro won the champs undefeated, with SA second.
In the TAC cup during the latter stages McGrath moved to midfield and played a starring role there as well including one 30+ disposal midfielder game in the TAC cup grand final as part of the winning team.
So, he can take marks, play half back OR midfield, win clearances and kick long. And he can make critical plays that win the game for the team.
So, a shorter Luke Hodge with elite running ability.
