Hmmm, Taranto is one of the top 5 or 6 for mine, but not sure he's #2. But, GWS do need to do due diligence and ensure the guy we pick will stick around.
I'm a massive Taranto fan tbh, I wouldn't be disappointed, though somewhat surprised if we went that route

I'm neutral at this point. I certainly see McCluggage & McGrath as the two standouts in respect of skills/potential, with others (Ainsworth, Taranto, Bowes, SPS - the latter with more risk than the others) just a touch behind. But where they sit now doesn't mean that's how their career ends up. Add in the perennial issue for us in regards go home factor - we need the recruitment department to get it right in both areas: skills/potential and character/long term commitment. Since I can only consider (and I'm certainly nowhere near being a good judge) the skills/potential portion, I'd still tend towards McCluggage if McGrath goes pick 1. But wouldn't be disappointed if we took Taranto - just cross fingers the team gets it right.

Picking Taranto at #2 smells like taking O'rourke earlier then we should've

Fair to say apart from the can't miss pick 2 selections in Cogs and Kelly we haven't always made great selections with pick 2.
But the one thing I do like about Taranto is that he has shown the ability to step up in big matches.

Just more that we paid a lot to get to pick 2 and we shouldn't be making reaches. Could've got him with 7

We only have one need which is a top 5 midfielder. Draft whomever is most likely to become that. Sounds like McLuggage or McGrath.

Let's not outsmart ourselves. Picking a gritty defender or a mid size forward with pick 2 is for fools. Those players are plentiful throughout the draft with the right scouting.

Will be very disappointed if we draft "for need" such as a small forward. Losing Treloar levels of disappointed.

I've got a better idea. If we need a tough small forward, figure out whatever Sydney is doing to identify their players and copy that. Don't waste pick 2 on someone we could get a similar player from the rookie draft.

Anyone know if this Stein fella has played much footy?

I actually used to compete against Jake, he would be the best pure athlete in the AFL by a large margin, hes also very well built. In saying this though I doubt he has played a game or organized footy in his life, so I don't think its very likely he will ever actually play at the highest level.

He did play in the Paul Kelly cup when he was in year 7 with Michael Hartley who is now at the bombers not that I would hang my hat on that, but it does give me a bit of hope that he also comes with a soccer background as well as being a tremendous athlete but as always time will tell.

The GIANTS have signed former Commonwealth Games decathlete Jake Stein as a category B rookie. At 22 years of age, Stein is an exciting prospect hailing from Penrith in Western Sydney. A World Youth Athletic Championships Gold Medalist in 2011, Stein represented Australia at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow before giving away the sport earlier this year. Stein is eligible for a category B rookie contract having not been registered in an Australian Football competition in the last three years. Having grown up playing soccer and athletics, Stein has also been courted by Rugby League teams in recent years. Stein said after trialling with the GIANTS over the last six months, he’s excited to join the list. “It’s fantastic to be part of this club and I’m looking forward to what’s to come,” Stein said. “Athletics is a bit of a lonely sport at times compared to footy where you have 40 guys on the list so I can’t wait to be back in that team culture. “Having only started following AFL closely in recent years, I’ve got a real appreciation of how hard the players work and the different skill set that’s required. “They’re incredible athletes and now that I’ve been lucky enough to get this opportunity, I can’t wait to give it my best crack. “AFL is really starting to build in Western Sydney and Western Sydney is really embracing the GIANTS and I hope I can play in role in that continuing.” GIANTS General Manager of Football Wayne Campbell welcomed Stein to the club. “Jake’s a very gifted athlete and an impressive person and we’re delighted he’s joined the GIANTS,” Campbell said. “He’s got a strong sporting background and he’s impressed in a number of trials he’s done with our staff over the course of this year. “Jake will work closely with our development coaches to get up to speed as quickly as possible and we look forward to seeing him commence training with our younger players next week.”

So apparently it was Marshall who decided that he didn't want to be giants bound
“In the end, it actually was my decision and I wanted to go to the open draft,” Marshall told foxfooty.com.au. “It was all based on getting more opportunities.
“Obviously GWS are stacked with young talent, so that’s where my decision came from, getting more opportunities and doing what’s best for me going forward.”

Blicavs was a steeple chaser, missed Olympic qualifying by not much - seems to have picked up footy ok.

Decathletes needs to be versatile. Looking forward to seeing what he brings. The very definition of a long term project player.

Blicavs had played football before though, albeit not since he was 14.

Jake is by far a greater athlete, He is the world record holder for the 'octathlon' which is a modified version of the decathlon, and I believe had he not been injured so often, would have been a very good decathlete on the world scale.
