2017/18 offseason - player & coaching movement and other discussion

I quite like the trades with the Dogs and GWS. Eva said she was going and we'd identified we needed a Lambert type. Instead of having to send a player to the Dogs we basically waved pick 1 in their face and probably said we'd take Harris. That way we got the deal done and depending on if we go forward or mid we could look at a Chloe Molloy or Izzie Huntington with that pick 2 in the Vic draft.

Not a player move, but Harmit Singh our women's backline coach and club's community engagement manager moved to Essendon a few weeks back.

Good Luck to him. Got a Better Job Elsewhere

We should have gone for Harris. I think we'll regret that.

It's a curious one.

Of the four Melbourne clubs, Harris seemed to be linked to us the least. Was that because we were the least interested in her, or she was the least interested in us?

AFLW is a different game to the men's, and I've wondered whether a star CHF is as valuable in the women's game as it is the men's? Of course they're valuable in both - but maybe in the women's game a dominant midfield is more likely to get the ball into their forward line? Hence why we favoured a gun midfield player (Lambert) over Taylor Harris?

Without really having much of a clue about the majority of women footballers league-wide, it seems to me that some go under the radar, and performances at this level can be unpredictable.

I don't understand why we didn't go for Harris, but assume the club didn't see the need. We've brought in a few, and maybe we think we'll be better balanced for next season.

I believe Mo Hope has been working on her fitness, which is obviously a good thing.

Keeping track of the ins and outs is baffling, TBH, mainly due to my own ignorance.

Contrary to popular narrative Harris would have been a good fit in terms of our structure Hope, Cameron and D'Arcy are much shorter; Garner less so, but like our others isn't the marking threat of Harris, which is something we really lacked. D'Arcy played well further up the ground last year and could have played more midfield, likewise Harris looked good in the middle for Brisbane and would have offered a point of difference to our midfield. Hope is also 28 or 29, so Harris would have covered the future too.

In terms of money with Lambert stepping in as tier 1 we could have accommodated Harris in that slot. While I'm not sure how much of our 40k ambassador/marketing pool has been spent with Carlton having a few high profile players I'd imagine we could have offered a similar wage.

Mkcaptain raises a good point about 1 year contracts, which makes future planning difficult.

The other aspect is getting a trade done, which was difficult for Carlton to complete with state based drafts.

We had Mutiple Top 5 Picks to use in a Trade for Harris

With regards to a trade Brisbane wanted players not picks as picks are worthless to them since they're the only club who can select players from the Qld draft pool. Either we had to convince additional players to leave, convince Stevens and/or Eva to go to Brisbane or come up with a multi club deal with some of their players heading north.

Trade and re-sign period completed - 20 players re-signed, 2 rookies (Hynes, Parker) and 1 player traded in (Lambert). Cula-Reid, Roden, Wotton and Walker not re-signed along with Sheahan and Heil who had previously been announced as delistings.

Collingwood
In: Jaimee Lambert (Bulldogs)
Out: Nicola Stevens (Carlton); Alicia Eva (GWS); Penny Cula-Reid, Kendra Heil, Helen Roden, Lou Wotton, Kate Sheahan and Georgia Walker (delisted).

Two big outs for Collingwood in Nicola Stevens and Alicia Eva, who finished first and second respectively in the club best and fairest. Stevens' intercepting skills across half-back will be missed, while Eva was a standout in a struggling midfield.

Jaimee Lambert played sore in quite a few games for the Bulldogs in 2017, and will add some much-needed grunt in the middle of the ground.

The addition of several early draft picks will benefit the older Magpies list. Coach Wayne Siekman was in charge of the under-18 Vic Metro teams from 2015-17, and his detailed knowledge of young Victorian talent will be a bonus in October’s draft.

Key defender and VFLW St Kilda captain Penny Cula-Reid could find a home elsewhere after struggling to break into the Magpies line-up.

Coaching changes, Siekman retained, but a whole new assistant panel. It looks like we've moved away from women's coaches (Harwood, Major) and Singh had dual roles with us. Harford and Dunn will bring AFL experience.

In:
Daniel Harford (10 years previously at StKevins and Balwyn) (senior assistant and midfield),
Lynden Dunn (mentor to our AFLW side last year),
Matthew Jones (Dandenong stringrays director of coaching)
Chloe McMillian (promoted from development coach)

Out:
Harmit Singh (Essendon)
Nikki Harwood
Brendan Major

Not sure if our other development coaches (Hayley Gossow, Courtney Young) were retained or let go.

Collingwood AFLW operations manager Mathew James said the club was delighted with their recruitment.

“Going into the second year of the program we’re eager to combine our lessons from the 2017 season with the mix of knowledge, skills and experience found in Chloe, Daniel, Lynden and Matt," he told Collingwood Media.

“Lynden quickly gained the respect of our AFLW players for his honest and professional approach while mentoring the team last season and with four teams under the one roof he’s exemplifying the side-by-side culture by working across both teams."

EDIT: our AFLW football manager is a new announcement too, he started that role in June.

Great decision to appoint Dunn. Seems like an absolute natural to step into coaching, based on his on field leadership and his experience.

Very glad he came into the club when he did and it's a shame it wasn't sooner. One of those players you just don't appreciate until you see them on a regular basis.

Interesting that Harford was brought onboard also. From memory he grew up supporting the pies. Finally gets to wear the right colours.

Lynden Dunn has been a great addition to our club, on so many levels. We got that one right, even if his age will limit his AFL career.

Dunn received a lot of praise at the women's B&F last year for his mentoring. It's great to see he's been rewarded with a formal role for 2018.
