I don't think a thread exists for this year so I'll start one up but feel free to move this.

There is no ATP main tour events this week due to Round 1 of the Davis Cup.

A number of Australians are playing the Challenger in Burnie. Some of their first round matchups are below.

Bolt (WC)v Even King (USA)
Saville v Jason Jung (TPE)
Ebden v Bourchier (WC)
Barton v Polmans
Jasika v Nguyen (USA)
Whittington v Nola (Slovak)

Some good wins from Kelly and Saville in particular.

She's seeded 2nd but received a WC into the tournament...not sure how that works.

That's easy enough to answer.

A WTA International tournament (like Taipei) holds four wild cards - two for players entirely of their choice, and two of what are referred to as "Top 20 wild cards". These two are reserved for player/s either in the year end Top 20, who have been No. 1 in the rankings, or have won a Grand Slam / WTA Finals / Premier Mandatory tournament at any time.

Therefore, as both a Top 20 player and a Grand Slam winner, Sam asked for one of these wild cards and got one. Her ranking means that she is seeded 2 even though she didn't originally enter the tournament.

This mechanism is why Francesca Schiavone will pop up many times in her farewell year on tour (you can get unlimited wild cards if you've won the WTA Finals or a Grand Slam) despite her ranking falling significantly very soon. Same with Daniela Hantuchova, although only winning Indian Wells means she gets a maximum of 3.

Arina Rodionova having a good week , she's in the final of the Burnie event having beaten Taylor Townsend 3-6 6-4 7-5(6). She'll face Asia Muhammad. If she wins she'll move to a career high ranking of around 154.

Also, can anyone explain to me why Ebden would use his PR to travel half way around the world to play a clay court atp event where he'll get his arse kicked

He's got a qualifier in the first round and possibly Lorenzi in the 2nd round, so might get some wins with a bit of luck.

He's a career 0-8 on the tour on clay. He's going to slaughted by that qualifier if he can't beat jasika on hard court at home.

Financially he has nothing to lose and he is off to Memphis after that so with the right flight connections it's not much of a detour. Quito doesn't attract the strongest of draws and it's at altitude. While he is terrible on clay, the altitude lessens the disadvantage. If a player can adapt to the altitude then it is a very good tournament to target as Estrella has shown in the past two years. He might not do too much here but it's worth the gamble for him.

I can see why ebden is there, watched a couple of matches last year of this tournament and it doesnt have a strong draw as its kind of out of the way could be a chance to break the duck on clay
