Find it staggering that people are dismissing this year's draft and suggesting that next year is a super draft.

As an example, people were talking up Hayes last year because he was All Australian and a year on he hasn't really fired a shot. Also remember people talking up Macreadie and Strnadica as top 10 picks. We should not dismiss this year just yet

Clubs won't/can't, but generally speaking, the enthusiasm levels are very low for this years draft.

That may change, but right now, there are few players involved in this years draft, being spoken about highly.

This last happened in 2014

It may have to you but it didn't to me.

The noise is louder right now for next years draft than it is for this years one.
2014 had a lot of talk going on about Petracca, Wright, McCartin, Brayshaw, Laverde, Lever, Heeney, Goddard......Boekhorst :) etc.
Not feeling the same happening just yet. It may and probably will, but we're projecting further down the track than we used to only a few years ago.

You don't remember the stream of articles about the rich batch of talls in 2015?

The do this shit every year, because apparently they forget that players actually up their training load right before the champs.

The underaged Lukosius looks an absolute beauty, all class.

Watching him move you wouldn't have thought he was a 195 CM KPP, I honestly thought he was a HFF/midfielder.

Beautiful mover, magnificent kicking action, smart decision maker.

Prototype of the modern AFL forward.

He's a literal twig but that's not that big of a downside.

Thin draft could me more reason to keep our top pick, means you get more advantage over clubs who are picking after the quality drops - bit like 2015

I would suggest the ONLY way we trade our early pick is the outside chance we get Kelly.

Otherwise we use it for sure.

Very much so, although that pick #1-2 we were talking about a few weeks ago, could easily be pushed out to a #7-8.

Everyone goes to the market together and if it's a particularly poor draft, only few will be winners..........we'll be winners. :)

I'm just hearing and seeing much more of the 17 year olds spoken about at this point in time, than I did in '14.

I'm also sick of hearing of the King brothers......King brothers this......King brothers that........ They've already been on Future Stars together, FFS. :)

Can't see us handing over our first this year, unless of course that ~#6 doesn't show much up, but if it wouldn't for us, why would it for anyone else?

Pretty sure our first is going to the draft in our hands.....next years? Maybe not so much although Ralph (?) on SEN just said, "Do not trade your next years first", which I think is a silly thing to say.

Because twins never generate headlines, ever
Because they're being spoken about being taken 1 & 2 next year........not because they're twins. FMD.

Here's from the weekend:

SOUTH AUSTRALIA
4.2 6.5 12.9 17.10 (112)
ALLIES 1.3 6.4 6.5 9.7 (61)

GOALS
South Australia:
Houlahan 4, Lukosius 3, Barry 2, Rankine 2, Fogarty 2, Giro, Rowe, Hewson, Rozee
Allies: Dixon 2, Scott 2, Brander, Powell, Davidson, Richards, Bell

AFL.com.au’s BEST
South Australia:
Lukosius, Coleman-Jones, Rankine, Edwards, Petty, Giro
Allies: Bailey, Scott, Shipley, Bell, Highmore

2 of the best 3 in the winning team are 17 year olds and not eligible this year.

Let's pick this debate up after the champs. It's going nowhere right now.

On sen today they were saying how poor this draft might be, saying last year there were 70 kids worthy of picking and right now this year it's just 29, adding that 2018 indeed looks like a super draft. Might be why SOS was happy to trade away our second rounder.

Even still it is hard to see us willingly going to the draft with no picks in the first two rounds so I'd expect us to keep our first and not trade for a Hopper or Kelly type unless we get back into the early part of the draft (Gibbs pick maybe).

If the draft is that poor then it is hard to see us being rapt if we get a pick around 35-45 for Cas. Going to be an interesting off season. Expect clubs to hold their first rounders and try to trade into next years draft. Maybe we try and trade Cas for a 2018 pick.

The other good thing about 2018 being a potent draft is it means clubs will be less likely to bid a very early pick on Ben SOS. So we might get him without having to use a super early pick. That would be awesome.

How's this then...

Gibbs - Lever - Hopper three way. We get Hopper and D. Smith and a salary dump as a sweetener to GWS. Some other club gets Lever.

Cas traded for a second rounder in 2018.

2017 OUT
Gibbs
Cas

2017
Pick 4
Hopper
D. Smith
Pick 40
Pick 58

2018 SUPERDRAFT
Pick 6
Bensos (second rounder)
Pick 35-45 (Cas pick)
Pick 42
Pick 60
Get that pick and see how you can utilise it
Casboult I would trade for anything I could

If I was drafting and you could also include 17 year old kids, Lukosius, Rankine and Hill for WA would be first picked from their respective states.

So that is partially the reason why there is plenty of talk about the younger kids.

I'm saying that the talk of next years draft is noisier than I'd seen/heard before.

We'll turn over 15 players in the next 2 years. This year or the next.

SOS will keep 'em guessing. If the player(s) we don't want aren't there at pick 70 we'll go into the season 38-6 with a couple of dartboard selections in the rookie draft.

We'll turn over 15 quite easily, one way or another and even though we won't want to be out of any draft, it's all relative to what may be on the end of selling a pick. If we 'must-have' Kelly, and we don't wish to give up something big by trade, at least one first will have to slide out.

I'm intrigued about all the noise around next years draft and wondering whether we may do well out of it.

I am assuming you're talking about rookie listed players as well? Otherwise, that is a large turnover in two drafts considering this draft it may only be worth picking up two players and using one on a rookie upgrade.

Updated from previous post

Cerra was a standout, will play next year, very clever, great hands and awareness. Loves the physicality. When playing as midfielder, won his share of clearances, at centre bounces and around the ground stoppages. Very hard worker both ways. Spent some time forward, commanding the ball when on a smart lead. Very strong hands in a marking contest. Will be able to rest forward and be dangerous, beautiful kicking action

Stoddart was a surprise packet, quick, beautiful left foot, great leap. Has been doing well at Eastern and the rise in grade has not affected his impact. Would like to see him play further up the ground when faced with VC. This kid could rapidly rise into 1st round contention

Petrucelle, lightening quick, reads the play well. Carves through traffic with easy. Speed is king in today's game, so I think he will continue to garnish interest from recruiters

England is very smart, set up very well, takes the game on and breaks lines. If he sharpens up his disposal by foot and given a shallow draft, he would sit as a 4th rounder for me

Rayner very composed, was very clean with the ball and his vision is very good, seemed like he didn't want to get out of second gear though.

Penrith is very clever, good forward pressure, but need to see more of him, before determining his worth

Ameduri, very tough, great repeat efforts. Has strong hands around stoppages as well as his marking.

Allen knows when and where to lead, sticky fingers, but maybe not agile enough for a 3rd tall, if he grew to 194, i would believe he would be a very good forward

Higgins gets a lot of the pill, he just seems to be in the right place, but was not always clean or damaging. Would make a very good link player as well as being a clever small forward.

Miller some attributes that will interest. At 196cm has shown that he can hold his own as a forward as well as in the ruck. Has a very good leap. Perhaps LemmingMaster could keep us all updated on him as well as other WA kids

Disappointments

Hayes had no presence as a forward. Seemed to lack passion and aggression for the contest. Hands were weak in the marking contest and is very slow off the mark. Not overly impressed with his ruck work either. Seems to have a predetermined plan of jumping in the ruck, turning his body to take impact on his ride side and palm with his left, seemed strange. Has a bad habit of lifting the ball above his head, then try and shoot out a slow, inaccurate handball. It also gives the opposition time to start moving into a defensive position

Stephenson was very quiet

Balta needs to keep his feet more, slow reflexes. Would like to see him play as a forward against VC

Not a huge number in the scheme of things. Anyone can rattle off a list of players who won't be at the club at the end of next year, I went through the list and counted 15, not including rookies who most likely won't be at the club in 2019 - not even including trades and renaissance man Liam Jones.

So even if we narrow it down to 5 senior list changes this year, that's still 10+ we'd offload next year. And we have several in the VFL who are on 1 year contracts already.

Reckon 15 in two off-seasons is about right as well, maybe a touch low. If the relative draft strength is as reported, and if we hold off on a big Free Agency push until next season, then I suspect 6-7 players will go this year, and 8-9 next year.

2017 - Gibbs, Casboult, Armfield, Buckley, Gorringe, Glass-McCasker (maybe Palmer, not sure on contract status, in 2018 if not here)
2018 - Simmo, Rowe, Boekhorst, Kerridge, Graham, Jaksch, White, Korchek

Guys like Sheehan, Smedts, Sumner, Thomas and Gallucci would also have to be looked at, but might survive an extra year if their fitness and form justify.

The exciting part is, in that list there are only 3 starting 22 players (Gibbs, Casboult and Simmo), and in 2 off-seasons we'd be looking to bring in a number of quality players (Hopper, Lynch (hopeful), multiple first round picks etc.).

That's being pumped up in part because it's an extra click-worthy headline. They're good and they're twins. Like I said, this stuff happens all the time at this point in the year because some clubs look like they're out of the finals race.

As is our pick this year unless GWS are happy with it as sole payment in a trade. Lots to play out.

We'll do well out of it if we stay in it.
