Reckon 15 in two off-seasons is about right as well, maybe a touch low. If the relative draft strength is as reported, and if we hold off on a big Free Agency push until next season, then I suspect 6-7 players will go this year, and 8-9 next year.

2017 - Gibbs, Casboult, Armfield, Buckley, Gorringe, Glass-McCasker (maybe Palmer, not sure on contract status, in 2018 if not here)
2018 - Simmo, Rowe, Boekhorst, Kerridge, Graham, Jaksch, White, Korchek

Guys like Sheehan, Smedts, Sumner, Thomas and Gallucci would also have to be looked at, but might survive an extra year if their fitness and form justify.

The exciting part is, in that list there are only 3 starting 22 players (Gibbs, Casboult and Simmo), and in 2 off-seasons we'd be looking to bring in a number of quality players (Hopper, Lynch (hopeful), multiple first round picks etc.).

I guess I partially forgot about the concept of trading away players, I was just thinking about heading to the draft and changing 15 players.

We'll do well out of it if we stay in it.

That's the circular argument and to be fair to one and all, there are too many things we just don't know yet.

One thing I feel I know though, is that SOS won't close the door on any possibilities just yet. It wouldn't make sense to.....so he won't.

Yep - trading players is going to be where it's at.

I wouldn't mind seeing us leverage Hawthorn a bit more this off-season. Say we get a Band 3 compensation pick for Casboult, which would be Pick 23 or so. Hawthorn are in a spot of bother with no early pick and a desperate need to start bringing in some new blood - so trade them Pick 23 this year, for their second and third rounders next year. Now that means we potentially give someone like Buckley a lowball one-year contract out of necessity, as we're down another pick this year, but means we're bringing in two kids next year from a stronger draft. Hawthorn get the immediate return they need, while we're happy to play a slightly longer game to get better players down the track.

Could do the same with Port who traded away their first rounder to Brisbane. If we get something like 12 and 17 from Adelaide for Gibbs, trade 12 to Port for their second rounder this year and first rounder next year. Then send 17 to GWS for Hopper.

A bit of creative drafting to leverage clubs this year gives us:

Casboult = 2018 2nd and third round picks (~24 and 42)
Gibbs = Hopper, 2017 second (~33) and 2018 first (~15)

We replace Gibbs and Casboult with Hopper and Pick 33, which is a substantial step back in the now, but we gain Picks 15, 24 and 42 in next year's stronger draft.

It's not a circular argument, it's a terse but definitive statement based on the, admittedly small, amount of evidence we have. Unknowns can also work in the positive and if you were to deny that, that would be circular reasoning. 'We don't know what we'll get with the pick, so we are free to trade it' doesn't make sense. For that matter, I'd only trade out of this year's draft (if we need to) if we keep winning and our first goes above about five or six. I think what happens with Gibbs might be a key to our trading. I'd say Gibbs alone is worth more than Hopper and that next year's first is probably worth more than a mid first rounder in this year's draft.

It is my belief that the range is 16-20 over the next two years, this year will be the intriguing one. No-one fully knows how strong or weak this upcoming draft pool is so that will have a bearing on how deep the cuts are overall.

If the recruiting department don't think they can bring in too many, then we may see the rookie list getting cleaned out first (Sheehan, Glass-McCasker, Gallucci & Korchek) and then some of the fringe players moved on to the rookie list to replace them.

Buckley, Thomas, Boekhorst, Jaksch, Jones, Gorringe, Sumner, Armfield, Palmer, Smedts, White, Pickett, Graham, Kerridge, Lamb & Lebois are all in the mix to be part of the shake-up at some stage.

*BUMP

The Nationals aren't far off and some of us will be looking at what may be on offer at years end.

At this stage we have a pick that looks as though it may be a top 4 but with no second rounder available.

This thread is not to cut across List Management, but just to discuss potential draftees. Youtube videos welcome.

Not by the definition we know but the discussion has done a few laps of the block already. Quite a few.

You're making a definitive statement in that we'll do well by staying in the draft.
How can you be so sure without knowing the outcome of what that pick may net us? You can't.....no-one can.

I can't see us trading this years first if we're in the top 4 or 5, but can see a reason to use next years first as bait.
The reasons have been put forward many times already, but we'll see.

I don't but I'm provisionally saying what I believe while others get excited by the prospect of trading in the two GWS mids by virtually any means necessary. I'd rather wait till we see how early this year's first is going to be and whether Gibbs wants to be moved on. My instinct would be to hold on to next year's first and trade up. If we trade it, there's no getting it back.

OK. That sounds like a plan.

SOS loves the draft and if we did find ourselves out of the top end one year, we'd just have to manufacture ourselves a way back into it. Easy. :)

So we match a bid for the older Hickmott boy and upgrade some rookies (Lebois, ASOS and Sheehan) ... I think we will have 4 picks in the draft rather than the 5 (2015) and 6 (2016).

Thinking we delist about 8 of which 2 will be retirees (Armfield and White) and perhaps trade FA departures (Gibbs and Casboult). Gorringe, Buckley and Jaksch not tried in Seniors yet.

Palmer and Kerridge contracted for 2018.

No reason to say this other than a feel and looking at profiles, on someone who may be available to us;

Reckon Lochie O'Brien may interest SOS. Either him or Stephenson.

Kinda agree Harks.

SOS seems like a pretty stubborn creature of habit type of guy to me. He forms an opinion and doesn;t budge much.

SOS obviously loves Josh Kelly. Sold the farm to get him at GWS. Seems really keen to now get him again. Lachie O'Brien seems very much a Kelly type and a Kelly formline at same age.

SOS was really keen on Will Hayward. Jaiden Stephenson seems like he would bring to us similar to what Hayward offered. Speed, class and natural forward play/goalkicking.

I agree these 2 would be very high in SOS's mind for our 1st Pick considering he was/is so keen on what Kelly/Hayward would offer us.

Good game at Punt Rd.

Higgins one of the standouts.
Hayes has been very good.

Our boy Penrith has got some will in him. Hasn't done a lot but there are signs there.

Still like Walsh. Looks like a player......for 2019
What was Penriths kicking like Harks?

Pretty sure Aph has stated that this thread isn't for list management, and what's more we've got no reason to elevate any one other than ASOS. Would be silly to elevate the other two at this stage, especially given that rookies no longer need to be elevated to play come 2018.

Penrith is named in the bests for Metro. I only caught the last quarter and he was barely sighted due to all the one way traffic while he was deep in defence. Who was he sitting on?
