Rayner has been likened to a Robbie Gray/Christian Petracca type. Powerful forward who can play midfield. I keep thinking of Rayner in our forward line in a couple of years time with our kids already. Could be nightmare for 17 other clubs.
Rayner might be the best available at our pick.
It's a hard one though. We need midfielders more than anything.
No good having forwards if we can't get the ball to them.
Rayner is unlikely to play much midfield in his first couple of years.
Cerra is my preference at this stage if available at 3.

Rayner brings something to our team that we havent had for a very long time. A super tough , super talented , big bodied medium forward. We could use some top ups to help out the midfield eg McVeigh until we nab shiel next year.

Reasonable view, but I'd take the best player at 3 provided his preferred position is not one in the back 6.

We have holes/depth issues from the midfield forward so whether we lack a midfielder or a medium powerful forward, it won't make a difference next year.

Add to the fact that we can still pick up 2/3 midfielders by trading, we can make this work.

I have been against getting Rayner with 3 but you make a good point. I would be happy with him IF we get mature help for Crippa... ie M.Kennedy and a couple of players like Lukas Webb and Balic. We should be able to get these trades and keep any top picks we receive from Gibbs if he goes.

At #3 you have to be taking best available, and aiming to pick the best player of the draft, really. #1s rarely miss, but it's not at all unusual for the best player of a draft to come from somewhere else in the top 15-20 picks. I have no idea who that might be this year, but we should be expecting to pick a kid who can be a superstar at 3. Can't wait to see who it is.

Wow, people are really freaking out about the Hopper and Kelly news

Not me this was my perfered option, take our medicine and hit the draft for one or two more years, then bring in a Kelly type talent, when we are ready to start playing finals footy.
Kelly is a gun no doubt and if you get an opportunity to get him to your club you have to take it, but it did feel kind of a year or two to early, Hooper really not that high on, but this way we keep our premium picks and continue to build this list through the draft as Bolton has stated many times.

Is it 2yrs now that no one has been drafted out of Tas (or Hibberd the year before was the solitary pick of recent years)?
There was no-one drafted from Tasmania last year (2016). In that year not one player from the Tassie Mariners (U/18) side even made the Allies team. The Allies being the combined division 2 side that plays in the Division 1 U/18's against Vic Metro, Vic Country, SA and WA. There was 4 players drafted in 2015 including Hibberd. Keiran Lovel went at 22 to the Hawks. He has been sidelined this year after a shoulder reconstruction. I expect several players to be drafted this year (Dixon, Hines, Mundy) and several others likely to miss who I consuder unlucky. There are several very good players from Tasmania who will be drafted in 2018 - Chayce Jones, Tarryn Thomas, Jordan Gadomski, Blair Rubock, etc. The following year also looks strong.

It's hard to believe that no one got drafted from Tasmania last year, for no one to make that allies is a joke. Are the AFL not doing enough down there or was it just one of those years

I believe

I believe the 2016 zero draft year was a combination of both the factors you mentioned. Undoubtedly, the AFL and the powers that be of Tasmanian Football need to have a good look at what they have achieved over the past 5 years, and more importantly, what they want to achieve over the next 10 years. They are certainly more important (and complex) questions than the number of games Hawthorn, North or any AFL team plays, in Tasmania.

Let's say we end up with #3 and #9 (from Crows after receiving for Lever and trading to us for Gibbs)

If we don't get Rayner, then what are the chances of us getting Dow? He looks like the type of player we need to, has acceleration, accurate by foot and hard at it. Exactly what we need really...

Possibilities with #3:

Rayner, Dow, LDU, Cerra

#9:

Stephenson, D.Fogarty, Higgins, Constable

Who would we be most happy with?

Also, what are the chances Bonar will be available at #36?

I checked them out too, looks like they were his best 2 games of the year.
I think that Dixon would have only played a maximum of 5 games for Kingston in the TSL after the U/18 Championships. I saw his last 2 games live, and have now watched video of two of his other TSL games . They were all impressive but you are correct, the last two games were his best. I should add here, that in my opinion the highlight reels from those 2 games, don't reflect Dixon's all round strengths. Co-ordinated, good skills, good on the ground and in the air and hard at it. I have watched Dixon for a while. He has always had plenty of ability but his game just continues to improve at a big rate.

The guys that you have indicated are all possible at those picks, although at this stage, Dow should be gone by the first 2 picks

Pick 9 is the absolute best that we will get for Gibbs
