Do you think Bolton would be happy should somehow SOS pull out Naughton at #3, Brander at #10 and Clavarino at #30?

Keep saying this but all too often, the 'Best Available' magically turns out to be just the type that a club is after...............weird, hey? :)
can still hardly believe he was still there at best available

Wasn't Macreadie rated as one of the best in the draft in the u17 year?
It'd be like Darcy Fogarty sliding to pick 30 because he had a down year this year. Eventually someone has to take them.

A lot of teams had to overlook the 'best available' in Macreadie for him to slide so far in the first place.
Some team may not have bid when they should have...
If we like someone, just put in a bid - and you never know e.g. Macreadie :)

It took some convincing from SOS for us to put a 'bid' in for Macreadie. We bid on him and GWS let it slide.
I like Macreadie, but reckon Bolton may have sooner had a mid, but clearly SOS thought he Macreadie was too good to pass on and had plans that worked out well, further into the draft, given we had another three picks in a deep draft.
Anyone that says we'll simply pick best available, dependent on a players rating, is simply wrong and I don't know why they want keep being wrong.

How would Bolton feel should SOS firmly adhere to a ratings that nets only talls in Naughton, Brander and Clavarino? How dumb would that outcome be?
We've had this discussion in the past. I believed that the dire state of our list necessitated that we took the best available regardless over the last two years. I think we clearly did that with every pick. Macreadie and Kerr weren't a desperate need for us but were best available.

At this point in our rebuild the state of our list now dictates that we take a more discriminate approach. So now I agree. It would be madness for us to take a KPD of any kind regardless of how good they are, and it would have to be a pretty special Key forward for us to take him (SOS took Boyd when he wasn't a need so he has history of doing that). Our list balance suggests that we need to target midfielders and forward flankers. Lucky for us this is a draft full of them.

Don’t think SOS will be interested in Claverino, considering Ben booted 4 goals on him earlier this year.

:p

If those 3 boys were 'clearly' the best available at our picks ie.3, 10 & 30 and we didn't pick them, then the recruiters didn't do their job. 'Clearly' being the key word here.

I don't think developing Brander and Clavariino in the VFL as an example to take over from say Rowe or Casboult would be a bad list decision or even use them in a trade to get a recognise mid, if needed next year, as another example.

To call thing dumb thinking is very narrow minded and IMO it is what has got us in this position!!

As good as Rankine looks, and he looks damn good, it's never wise to project who the best player may yet be, one year from now.
All the buzz is currently around Rankine, Lukocius, King and then there's Hill, Walsh and a couple more, but that will change. It always does.

In principle, I agree Harks but pretty sure Rankine has already jumped out to an unsurmountable lead :p

BTW, I remember seeing a freshly-posted highlights reel of one of his games on Youtube. In the comments section lay just a single viewer comment that read: "Holy ****"

He looks terrific but the only question is; Will he again look that good next year?

Young men can find all sorts of distractions and even the best talent may not come up to scratch, when they need to.
Overall though, the talent looks unique and if others can come up and overtake Rankine and co....... They'll sure be special.

I am still in shock after what I saw of Rankine. I sat down and just stared at the wall. I thought: "This can't be right. Has to be some CGI rendering. No human can do that. Surely!"

What struck me watching his highlights reel was that it was as thrilling to me as just about anything I have previously seen in the AFL. Some of Juddy's or Robbie Gray's ridiculous plays maybe come close.

I'd suggest that if he looks only 3/4 as good next year it will still be ridiculously good.

Sadly (in a sense), I think there is a good chance we will move up the ladder in '18 and so will likely have very little chance of getting him.

Where do you predict we will finish?

Our draft list would include bands, so they would have a list of every player ranked 1-100etc plus then bands of 5 to 10 from those rankings with players we would take position-ally.

It's definitely more complex than 'tick off your ranking list'. Macreadie and Kerr did fill needs last year and even if there are isolated cases of same types there may be an eye to future draft strengths.

we are carlton - we don't do progress - we'll get rankine by outrankin every other team for genuine shitness..........

People have to remember that we had a 19 year old Weitering, Rowe and Plowman and had just picked up 20 year old Marchbank in a trade prior to drafting Macreadie. We then grabbed ASOS for depth.

Liam Jones hadn't even moved back yet. So Macreadie did fill a need when drafted.

I have a feeling around 11-13.

Id hope so too. But feel there's probably only 1 team majorly going backwards in the bottom few and thats north. I wouldn't be surprised to see us finish in the bottom 4 again in 2018 then a massive jump up the ladder in 2019

We were hit pretty hard by injuries in '17. Crippa will be itching to go, as will Bam Bam. Then, there's the progress that we should see from our huge list of the younger lads. Rayner will help out immediately with the goals tally :p. I'm quietly confident :)

You're right re Cripps and Kennedy. But the loss of gibbs will hurt a little. I expect Lang to slot straight into our best 22 also. Injuries happen and they will again in 2018.

Brisbane beat us last year and i expect them to be better in 2018. Freo will be better also. As will the Suns. The competition is tightening up and you're right, 11th is a possibility.

I just think our backline needs another 22 games together. Our forward line is still all over place. Our midfield the same. And our depth just not there yet. But thats why i think we have 1 more year of learning before its game on...

We as a club have our s#!+ together now. Its just time into these kids thats needed.

Have been told by someone close to L. O'Brien that we have interviewed him more than any other club. Strongly considering at 10, if not , WCE have guaranteed they will pick him up at 13 if he lasts to their pick.
Was considered the best player in this years draft 12 months ago. Would be happy with LOB.

Jones and Jacksh papers were stamped last year so SOS was prepared to go tall. Jones preformed an unparalleled career resurrection. So we have one extra tall more than we need.

The difference between the best tall and the best small available is never so large you want to significantly unbalance your list. We are at that point with tall defenders.

It will be interesting to see what the Pies do with 6. Desperately need KPP

2016 - McCluggage & Bowes/Florent
2015 - Mills/Oliver & McKay
2014 - Brayshaw & Cockatoo
2013 - Billings & Freeman
2012 - Plowman & Daniher/Menzel
2011 - Tyson & Sumner
2010 - Day & Gorringe
2009 - Martin & Melksham
2008 - Hill & Davis
2007 - Masten & Dangerfield

Basically, the only guys who won't show anything historically from picks 3 & 10 will be Carlton players, f&#&$*

Really though, compromised drafts aside you really can't lose... surely not...pls

Agree with first part of your statement (same 4 teams but in a different order perhaps) but not sure of the massive jump in 2019.......hope so:thumbsu:
