Richards sounds like a Wayne Hughes special - reaching for a speedy flanker, who accumulates mid-teens in terms of possessions, who may go into the midfield one day. If we overlooked a similar (not as hard), but better player in O’Brien for him I think I would cry :(.

Add to that Mullett who is likely a short-term option at most (2-3 years then depth, similar to Kerridge).

Simpson - gone in 2 years tops.
Docherty - future captain, has publically stated a desire to spend some time in the middle.
Byrne - has played 15 games in 3 seasons, love what he offers but he could end up another Sheehan-story.
Williamson - strong candidate moving forward, but also has the size and aggression to perform in the middle.
Mullett - stop-gap recruitment, if he becomes any more than that it'll will be a pleasant surprise.
McDaid - Cat B rookie, has never played AFL in his life?

That's 6 small defender types.
1 close to retirement.
1 genuine gun with 10 years ahead of him.
1 good prospect with an unfortunate injury record.
1 promising young 19yo who could play a role higher up the ground.

1 short-term DFA.
1 Hail Mary international prospect.

The three in bold are the ones we'd hope to lock in for the next 5-6 years while we make an play for #17. And really, none of them are blessed with exceptional pace. One's a general who can read the play, the other two are quality ball-users. There's absolutely room for a pacy left-footer who takes the game on and hits targets at full flight.

The more pertinent question is who else could still be on the board that we simply could not pass on?

Again I have concerns about trying to replace players who we think might transition to the midfield. If they can't then we end up with more flankers. With #30 maybe but #10 ... only Coffield is around that mark.

The way Doc plays his reading of the play behind the ball is his best asset. He's not an outside runner and he's not a contested beast. Not sure how he would go manning up a full time mid.

Willo could stay with an opponent but his kicking is all about getting over the midfield zones or spotting up a corridor option. He's a better midfield prospect than Doc IMO but no certainty.

No idea who we will take at 10, but I do know that we interviewed Nick Coffield a couple of weeks ago. We were a number of clubs that have met with him. Apparently Carlton were super impressive to deal with - us and GWS being the 2 clubs that really impressed him. One other club with a top 10 pick certainly didn't impress him.

Hahaha gotta be norf

EDIT: so reading through it wasn’t north meh still a boring club

Twomey thinks O'Brien is only a chance if things fall a certain way. If Coffield, Clark or Stephenson fall we will go that way.

O'Brien has been invited to the draft though.

You have to think at least one of Coffield Fogarty Cerra or Clark gets to us at 10. Can't see us passing any of them up

Landsberger said we won't pass on Fogarty at 10.

20 players are invited to the draft telecast.

Sure. You'd think the clubs would have nominated them as possible top 10s for them to be invited.

Still think three HB runners is too few, especially when a couple of them have the ability and desire to at least rotate through the middle. Three onfield and one on the bench makes sense, especially if they're flexible enough to be used in different roles should it be required. And someone like Richards offers a clear point of difference in terms of skill set.

I'd be a lot happier with Richards than Bonar at 10. Though if Clarke or Fogarty were available, or even Cerra as has been suggested recently, then they'd be a bit higher on my list of preferences. Positionally though, a speedy half back with top notch disposal is an important component in today's game.

Yes agree, depends how the cards fall, if we get a slider , Fogarty , Stephenson , Cerra, Clarke or Coffield we will take them . If they are all snapped up I think it’ll be Richards or O’Brien.

Does Fogarty have strong ties with SA?

For some reason i just have it in my head that he's a bit of a flight risk and likely to request a trade to SA at least at some point in his career, even if it's not after 2 years.

2 first round picks please.

I don't understand the question.

If we see Richards as the best option for us at that pick...why wouldn't we take him?

Given what SOS said about us targeting midfielders/forwards in the draft, I'd assume that perhaps we might actually target midfielders/forwards in the draft. It's only Brett Anderson's self-confessed guess. I wouldn't get too invested in it.
