2018 - AFLX

You get that next week

In all fairness this replaces week one of the JLT where teams would play in super remote areas and they would reward those areas by sending their youngest newest players and try some experimental things before bringing in regular players and game plan by game 3 of JLT

I think you commented a while back that you didn't get why people were so pissed off about the x game. I have to agree. Not because I like it; I am actually pretty neutral. I do think it is a good idea to trial something on a rectangular ground. And I also think AFL could be vulnerable in the same way that cricket was decades ago, so it is better if they control it.

I do think that by making a bit trashy, with silver balls and terms like zooper, they are not doing themselves any favours, and the commentary has been absolutely rubbish. I think this is their version of the 'pyjamas' from short cricket, but for me it detracts.

I don't mind at all if they keep developing it for the pre-season. In the end it seem pretty good for skills and fitness, and there seemed to be minimal injury risk. Tidy up some rules and try and work out some improvements to the format. Maybe cap it as an under-23's pre-season comp? Seeing our younguns was without doubt the best I took out of it.

I liked that it was a chance to see our new draftees on show and making it an U/23 format is a great idea. The AWFUL would probably say that having no "stars" would mean no audience. I also agree with the comments re trashiness. Totally crap and shows a complete disdain for the audience. I liked that it was open and so hopefully the kids can show their skills without getting hammered and/or injured. I enjoyed watching Freo but couldn't be bothered watching the other teams, except Port beating weagles.

I'd rather just have an extra week of JLT. This AFLX stuff is not worth watching, it's a glorified training drill, if none of your best players were at training.
Don't watch. I would watch selected training, such as intra-club games, so have zero issues with the concept if it is as you say "a glorified training drill". Others have proposed that the club streams those training games too.

Anyone know where I can view the second game against Poort? I missed it live and want to see AB in action.

How are you stating opinions on the pros and cons of AFLX if you didn't watch it?

Was pretty rubbish but has potential to be something with some tweaks. You'll never get the superstars playing in the current format when it's worth nothing but having the kids on show and the ball movement skills are pretty good. I'm sure they'll tinker with it over the next few years and come up with something.

Soccer is boring because scoring is very hard and infrequent. AFLX is boring because scoring is too easy and not challenging enough

They should fence in the boundary so the ball cannot go out of bounds. Replace the grass with ice, and not allow kicking (only handballing) and see how that goes.

Would be quite interesting! Handball mini match sim/ice hockey/AFLX combo. I’ll fax Gil now.

That is a brilliant idea. Pad the fence so they can't kill each other. And remove the term zooper from the vernacular..

Perhaps a banked track around the flat oval. A steel wall with wire mesh on the top. We can give some of them motorbikes and others rollerskates.

Maybe a steel ball weighing around 10kg

We could start by firing the ball from a cannon.

Maybe make the goals even smaller.

The AFL obviously want a high paced & fast scoring game. Us as AFL fans don't want our players injured.

How about instead of goals make the entire boundary line up their end a scoring zone for the team (like rugby & stuff), and have the players in Zorb balls like these:

The twist is - the players are the game balls. Each time a player rolls over the boundary line their team gets like 100 points so it's really high scoring.

Top idea in my opinion, and I hope they grab onto it.

But my dream concept is still the development of a football code which features two balls in play simultaneously.

It would probably need to be less collision based than AFL, and somehow stoppages would need to be dealt with.

Anyone heading to Bali after the football season? Maybe we can workshop the concept.

You forgot to mention chainsaws..

There's too many creative lines in this to think he came up with it overnight (unless he's a real talented writer, in which case he wouldn't be covering AFL). Me thinks this came together over the past week or so and was completed so, and filed to fill his pre-prepared narrative rather than give a fair appraisal of what he saw yesterday.

Oh I don't know.... five minutes into the first game and about twelve different synonyms for 'asinine wankfest' had sprung to mind already...

..."it's like asparagus-flavored goat-piss mouthwash...but for your eyes" was my personal favorite as I recall.
