Just sleeping on it last night and had a rethink about Jack Martin - if he is hell bent on leaving then would want a pick (top 6 pick) that helps us get all 3 of the gun SA players (Lukosius, Rankine, Rozee) and we fully hit the reset button.

I think the Suns can trade up into the top 8 picks without having to lose an elite player like Jack Martin. With pick #17-18 plus #26 and #29 we could tempt St Kilda, Fremantle (if they make the Neale trade), or the Western Bulldogs out of their high picks. There appear to be a number of other players who want to be traded like Hall and KK that should be worth 2nd round picks given they are top 22 calibre players, plus we have a couple of early 3rd round pick, so there will be plenty of trading chips.

For mine, Jack Martin should cost more than a #1 pick, given he is not a free agent and is still in contract.

No club with a top 8 pick is trading for two very late firsts and a bunch of thirds.

In 2016 we (the Lions) traded pick 2, 31, 51 & 60 for picks 3 & 16.

Right now every club is waiting to see how far back second round picks get pushed back once compensation picks and priority picks are handed out.

Your pick 26 could turn in to pick 31 by the end of the trade period, and then clubs need to factor in how far back picks might be pushed back when father son and academy bids are made on draft night.

The top 30 kids in this years draft might be pretty decent, but when ~5 of those kids are tied to various club academies or are father son kids tied to clubs, any pick after pick 25 doesn’t look as enticing.

Making plenty of noise about not wanting to leave SA. Not sure why you would want to risk it. You'd be better of looking at Hately to join the other two SA players in Lukosius and Rozee. Or alternatively Smith.

Personally would rather offer 2 + 17/18 + 26 for 1 and 19 from you guys. Would rather Walsh and one of the kings or Smith than the SA guys but I agree Rankine seems risky. Whether or not that’s just Adelaide media trying to scare off clubs with a bit of ‘go-home’ factor is yet to be seen though

I cant imagine we would give up 1 if we cant get the guy we want at pick 2 or your Lynch compo of 3. Personally I want us to trade down a little to pick Connor Rozee. Reckon he will be an absolute gun. That's said, I don't think you guys can pass on Lukosius at pick 2. Pick 3 you guys are gonna have a choice of anyone but Walsh it seems.

Fingers firmly crossed that the Jack Martin talk is the usual trade period media speculation where a mate of a journo goes on BF and sees a post and then tells the journo that a trade might be on, and the journo runs with it since they need to fill space several times a day.

- trading out to the back of the 1st round gives them options they don't currently have, getting West jnr and significantly upgrading their next selections with enough to also be able to get Buku Khamis their Next Gen Academy player plus some solid 2nd round talent.

The Bulldogs may walk out of Trade Week with a lot better Draft capital and be confident of getting all their targets while holding onto their high pick in order to get one of the "Super Seven".

Secondly, all those trades you listed, not one of them sees one team giving up a single high pick for a couple of later picks.

Each team trading out a high pick, is still trading back in another high pick, multiple high picks, and/or a decent player.

None of those trades you listed is proving your point, quite the contrary actually.

That is a pretty good summation of the last paragraph of my post, except you're spinning it to the extreme. After Dahlhaus compo and a few trades other than trading out of #6 they should be fine. There is still an inherent risk in hoping West doesn't get a bid that early because it doesn't really cost whoever is picking before them anything - bid on West and either get a good young player because his Dad's club wouldn't match the bid OR get a good young player anyway because it is top 10 in the Draft.

The whole point of speculating is to try to imagine what recruiters might do. Maybe the Dogs convince Port to overpay for #6 or Adelaide. The Suns are the club who are going to have the most picks, so why not speculate on the SUNS BOARD. Feel free to go and speculate all you like on the Tigers Board.

Yeah but this just proves the point. people will trade high picks, for other high picks, you can't offload a bunch of mid/late seconds for a premium pick.

McCarthy trade another good example of this. 7 and McCarthy for 3 kept Fremantle still in the top 10 picks + gave them a talented young KPF.

The Giants initiated that trade with Brisbane under the assumption they could pick up McGrath at 2 (it was the 3rd trade of the trade period I believe and at that point McCluggage was widely tipped to go at 1). Brisbane also could not have known Berry would last until 17, as he was rated a top 20 prospect and could have gone anywhere between 10 - 20 on the night. The Giants in this trade knew they would never get to use 16 because of Setterfield, Perryman and Cumming so it made sense to sweeten the pick 2 to 3 upgrade with a late first and get points for later use. Again, a very unique circumstance where they were offering Brisbane the better deal, but only because it benefited their needs (Ie. they were going to get McGrath at 2 who they ranked the highest and who wasn't going to be there at pick 3, and could then just match their academy bids).

But since you are so interested, in 2015, the Dogs sent pick #11 and what became the final pick of the 3rd round to Carlton for #20 and #21 as barberbarbarian says. I see a similar scenario for picks #16, #26 and #29. You guys can get on your high horses, but you just get arguing in circles with examples that validate my predictions. Yes, they are speculative and favour the Suns because this is the Suns Board.
