Hang on
Clayton aka as "The guy who makes his living out of identifying talent and potential "couldn't identify that West Coast had the ability to win the Grand Final this year?
Am I missing something?
Does he get a free asterix or something with his opinions?
Or even worse, Clayton used Robert Walls tipping expertise to determine whether the trade was favourable or not. ;)

Seriously though, I know that it is good to have an even age spread profile for a playing list and that was his intention, but sometimes I think Clayton tried to be too smart in trading for future picks all the time.

You guys may very well get one of our top 5 picks for Hogan but there will quite possibly be West Coasts 1st rounder or other early second round pick coming back to Melbourne too

If it is a Freo (6) /Lions (5) pick then I can see the WCE pick happening, with some sort of exchange of later picks

If it is pick 10 or 11 then that might not even get the deal done

I’m sick of people blaming Clayton for this. Virtually no expert tipped West Coast to even make the 8 this season. Robert Walls even tipped them to be wooden spooners. It was just dumb luck.
Not dumb luck - just a mega Victorian underestimation of a club that resides outside of Melbourne !!
On a level playing field West Coast wins by 5 goals plus...
New team structure - given the West Coast win- is for way more marking talls …. also makes sense given likely rule changes.
Lukosious + King twins... ??

That will be pick 19 thankyou
Disappointing because 17er assured us midseason they'd lose the last 9 and drop to 12th:(
I actually made an analysis of all scenarios and said this was the most unlikely yet still a remote possibility. I'll try to use small words next time. I was wrong in the preseason when I defended Clayton's Abomination, but most people thought WC would be a dumpster fire. Did you predict they'd win the GF?

I had them finishing in the 8 .. not a team giving a cheap pick..

You need to inject your own Gold coast flavour , as much tall foward are important ,Ryan and Rioli did a lot of damage too as small forward . Every year team will tweak their game plan to fit the players they have .eg last year Yeo play more half back but this year more midfield . ( Redden hardly play last year ). Both Rioli and Ryan spend few years in State league ( SANFL and WAFL ) before get drafted. They will be no guarantee state league players GC pick will be success but the same applied to 18 years old draftees .

Agreed - but think Suns are deficient in Marking Forwards.. even if the game is chaos entry - you need a Kennedy and a Darling.
No Lynch - what tall's do we have ??

Kennedy (2mp) , Vardy ( Crossley ) , Lycett (Witts ) ,NitNat ( Nicholls)

just an assumption GC recruiters might have other idea on mature state league players , Darling ( Josh Corbett 1.90 m , Chris Burgess 1.93 m , Jack Hayes 1.93 m ) + Sam Day + maybe Jack Lukosius.

Graham,Koenan more backmen than KPF.

Small forward Liam Ryan ( Jack Martin - Assumption he is still here ) , Rioli - ( Shane Mcadam, Mitch Maguire ) MacPherson
Brad Sheer. Nutting ,Heron ,Lemman , Holman , Young ,Sexton .

I thought Richmond would go back to back but I had WC in my top 4
They average 10 wins a year at home and I didn't see any reason for them to be worse than last year

You still need players in the guts getting the ball down to them and we don't have that yet.....need those tough mid filed bodies in there and then we will go places.

The Eagles trade ended up looking bad but I thought it was OK at the time given our available list spots, the number of picks we had, the fact we wanted to draft a couple of academy players, and the chance of including that Eagles pick in a trade for Weller.

For several years we have been pushing draft value forward as we trade our players and take back current and future draft picks. It caught us out a bit last year.

On the other hand, the Weller trade ended up pretty good but I thought it was atrocious at the time. So far, both Weller and Ballard look like long term quality players for us. Take that.

With the draft, in the end, it matters a lot more who you pick than where that pick is. We should try to accumulate high picks, but I strongly suspect that we supporters put way too much focus on where a pick is. Pick 10? Not enough. I wish we had pick 15 instead of pick 18. etc etc.

Wherever your picks are, just keep picking good young prospects like Ballard and Powell and go from there.

Fact is, Fremantle wanted pick 2 for Weller , we didn't want to give that up. Tried to acquire what we were hoping to sell as a high draft pick to Fremantle . They were smart enough not to accept. If they had, we wouldn't be talking about the trade flop here. It would be a masterstroke to get Weller for what a now pick 18-22

To be honest Weller knew what he was talking when he suggested Fremantle should take GC multiple second round pick and this year second Rd on the radio .

Tim Kelly , Liam Ryan , Zac Langdon could definitely add more to Fremantle than just one of Cerra/Brayshaw plus this year second Rd pick .

This.
Influential mids on the big stage yesterday were Shuey, Sheed, Redden, Yeo, Adams, Sidebottom, Crisp, Sier, Phillips, Adams.
Not one was drafted in the top 10.
Plenty of midfield talent in the teens and 20s.

Correct - just the Talls that you need top picks to get.

After pick 9 this year every team's draft board will be wildly different so having pick 15 or 20 probably won't make much difference.

There is a rumour on our trade thread that we’ve enquired about Jack Martin.

What roughly do you think he would cost us in a trade with you guys?

He's contracted to the end of 2019 and a required player, so it's a moot point unless he wants to leave. If that is the case, then it would cost you big time. Probably your 1st rounder (#6), and maybe we might send with one of our 2nd rounders back. Jack was taken with our 1st pick as a 17yo, in one of the Incentive Drafts that both GWS and the Suns competed in.

That structure also got the Crows to the Grand Final last year.

Everybody forget about the Crows already .Maybe this year GF are more exciting than last year .

And that first round pick we handed over was #2 from memory, so we’d want Avery high return for a player we’ve invested so much in.
