Seen as though the last major piece we need for our 22 is a small forward who can kick goals and is quick, we should take a punt on Elijah Taylor, exactly what we need and is also indigenous so would help with bringing jamara in. This is if weightman isn’t there at 13.
A wingman is also a need. Stephens and Sharp should also be considered.

I reckon we could play JJ on the wing
We have in the past at times for mixed results. JJ is too inconsistent, and the wing will only expose him to more tagging which he struggles with. We need a winger that's a clone of Hunters consistency and ability to find the ball. Combined with JJ's damaging side when switched on. How often do we see JJ get a lot of the ball?

I'm all for a natural winger if a small forward and talented young defender are not available.

On another note.

Don't get people saying we should drop back from 13. Outside the top 5, the 6th to 15th players are pretty even and still good talent. The depth is weak, but the top end talent is there.

Small Forward - Weightman, Taylor
Wing - Stephens, Bergman
Tall Defender - McAsey, Worrell
Medium/Tall (Morris type role) - Gould

A couple of those more rated ones will likely be there around our pick, and a couple of others are slight reaches. Dropping the pick back puts us outside that tier of talent, to another rung below. I think our pick is in a solid position

Can't shake the feeling that Power wants to sell our pick for a ransom of 2020 points on draft night. With such a even 1st round there will probably be players who are ranked 3-5 on some teams draft boards who'll slip all the way to our pick. Find the teams, put em on the clock and hope they fold under the pressure and cough up way too much.
This has been my feeling all along. Completely understandable to want to hold onto the pick as long as possible, since we'll get a huge premium for it on draft night. Could end up with a situation where someone like Port, with Pick 18, will overpay like crazy to move back up the order if Gould is still there at our pick, just as an example

Dig your thinking. Sharp looks good. Winger with elite foot disposal. Hopefully, he is a right footer.
Can be a 'selfish' footballer though according to some draft watchers.

Not sure we'll trade down or do anything fancy, I think we'll just take the best available then consider needs with our final 1-2 live selections. Suspect after taking two 19 year olds last year another mature ager could be in the frame (Scott?)

Big Taylor fan. If we took him at 13 I'd be comfortable with it.
FWIW we will likely take CCP as a rookie via our NGA this year.

Pick 53: Bulldogs- Anthony Scott

I like your thinking Mofra, one of nine matures populating my list.
B.S, J.R, C.G, A.B, A.A, M.P, M.H, L.P and A.S an army of matures.

If we don't get Scott, Sokol could come into our thinking. We love ourselves a medium marking forward (Dale, Gowers, Dickson, Lloyd).

Miles Bergman is not a name that is mentioned often, but that Twomey summary sounds like he has just the attributes we would value highly. Anyone reckon he's a chance?

I had the same feeling about jeremy sharp , anyone elses thoughts on him

B.S Pick 46: West Coast- Ben Sokol, just behind A.A Pick 43: Carlton- Ajang Ajang.

The matures kick in at Pick 28.
I'm really hoping Sokol lasts to our Pick 53. He fills a hole needing to be filled in our side when Dickson departs. We really don't have many decent, proven medium forwards right now. Bailey Dale looks the goods, but there's nothing past that. Gowers dropped to VFL quality (hoping he rebounds, but who knows), it seems the coaches want Wallis playing midfield rather than forward despite looking alright there, and Greene is entirely unproven and may not amount to anything.

Lloyd?

I don't imagine he's around long term. Will be 30 by the start of next season, but yes I probably should have mentioned him in there. I was more referring to younger long term players, but Lloyd should still have 2-3 years left minimum

Yep, and if anyone knows how to take advantage of desperate teams it's Ameet Bains. Remember in 2016 in a similar situation, he took advantage of a desperate Hawthorn to turn pick 10 into a future 1st (pick 7), and 2 2nds.

10 + 68 > 7, 23, 36.

Probably one of the best deals ever tbh.

I don't quite see the draft tiers in the same way.

I think there are 8 who are probably gone before our pick. Rowell, Anderson, Green, Young, Ash, Serong, Kemp, Flanders. Green shouldn't be counted because I think GWS end up trading to a higher pick before the bid, so there are 7 players in the open pool.

Then I think there is another 5 a level down. McCasey, Robertson, Stephens, Weightman and Jackson. That takes it to 12 in the open pool.

Next tier down are players like Worrel, Gould, Bergman, Sharp and Williams who are a bit more speculative.

That's just my read on it and chances are there is a bolter or 2 come draft time so I'm still very happy to hang on to pick 13 but we should be open to the possibility of trading it. Gold Coast for instance want eariler picks so could offer pick 20 and next years second rounder.

Who do you have in mind for pick 13, out of interest?
Will Gould.

There's a feeling around here that we held onto 13 so tight because we've got someone specific in mind. If they're gone on the night I imagine you could trade for it without too much trouble.

Also we probably need points for next year, who's third rounders do you have?
We have our own and Essendons 2020 third round picks.

We currently have to many picks for this draft.

The club has talked about packaging 16 and 21 to move up in to the top 12 picks. But I’m not sure we’ll find a buyer.

Pick 13. Bulldogs
Pick 14. Geelong
Pick 15. Gold Coast
Pick 16. Brisbane

The concern for the Lions is if Gold Coast keep their pick 15, they’re likely to select Will Gould.

The talk is the Bulldogs are strongly interested in Cody Weightman, and neither Geelong or Gold Coast are likely to select a small forward with their mid teens picks.

Definitely not Gold Coast, as they’ll be prelisting two in Connor Budarick and Malcolm Rosas as part of their draft concessions.

Otherwise if we keep hold of 16 and Gould is off the board, we probably look at Miles Bergman.

Picks 16 and 34 feels like a little overs for just moving up 3 spots, but we’re already trying to trade pick 34 for a future 2020 second round pick, so it’s a pick for sale.

Pick 34 possibly puts you in the range of Elijah Taylor if he slides a little on draft night. (Talk is he has similar issues in WA as Sydney Stack had, and getting out of WA might be the best thing for him. But he would need to be at a club with a strong indigenous welfare program).

Otherwise you’re probably looking at a couple of small forwards being available in Kysiah Pickett (a more athletic version of Caleb Daniel) or Jack Mahony from Sandringham, or developing talls such as Sam De Koning, and a few of the SA and WA second and third tall type defenders.

We would prefer a future pick than your second rounder. But you are in the same boat too....

Weightman likely going to the Dees at pick 8, so we might want to move back but we don’t want more picks for this year.

On the surface, sliding 3 spots looks pretty pointless, but the beauty of live trading is that it can become pretty significant depending on who is left on the board.

If it did come down to Brisbane wanting to jump up the board to grab Gould, I imagine we could charge a pretty huge premium on that move. If you had your future 2nd still, I would've said that would be the price paid, but I can definitely see us going for 16 + 34 depending on who is left

FWIW he’s a name that has been mentioned a lot on the Lions board. First mentioned just after the U18 Championships finished, and spoken about a lot since trade period.

Pity. 16 and 34 would get you any number of combinations of a half forward or general forward, and a small forward.

Seems a lot a clubs will be taking fewer picks in to this years draft and next years draft, than we’ve seen in the last three years.

Next years draft is ruined by too many academy prospects dominating the early rounds. Clubs will be after points and not mid round picks.
