Because the land of the giants structure worked so well at Peel this year.

When Lobb plays ruck for all of 20-25% of a game we will likely have Mundy sitting up forward with Cox and McCarthy.

Another tall and we lack mobility and forward pressure. And let’s face it if doing a 3 point turn was a good asset for tackling pressure Tabs would be elite.
Because Peel is a good example. Jesus mate.

How about the reigning premiers. How about the greatest team of the last few decades. Did you watch us in 2013??? How'd Pav go when Clarke went in the ruck?

We should try emulating what keeps coming back to be the successful structure.

I'm more than happy for it to be Hogan/Cox + Lobb if the club goes that way.

Have you watched Freo play when we rely on McCarthy being the main target in our fwd50?

Lobb plays 30% ruck 20% bench 50% fwd. So for half the game he's not foward. If we only have Hogan and McCarthy as targets guess what... opposition teams won't give a rats about McCarthy. They'll put a medium defender on him that just runs with McCarthy, they know he can't take a contested mark, just need to stick to him. Then the two main defenders will sit on Hogan's head. Geez that sounds familiar, no thanks.

Switch out McCarthy with Cox or Tabs and it's makes a big difference, because both of them can take a contested mark.

McCarthy is basically a fwd flanker, let’s not kid ourselves that he’s a kpf .... he just isn’t. As a flanker he needs to run to open spaces and present, and be opportunistic on goal scoring. He also needs to provide defensive pressure when required.

If he can’t do these basic things for whatever reason, he is surplus to requirements!

The only other fwd flankers we have are Bennell and now Sturt.. it’s just a position we are lacking in. Spot is available to the player that wants it most...

Fyfe could fill the role, but we actually need him more in the midfield and occasionally resting forward.

Couple of things you gloss over

2018 premiers forward structure was Kennedy darling and arguably Vardy (played defensively on Grundy)

McCarthy is not and will not be our ‘primary’ marking forward as Sandi or Darcy will inevitably rest forward rather than go to the bench.

We also play a tall resting midfielder in our structure in FYfe or Mundy adding to our marking ability. Mccarthy would take the defender behind them.

Mccarthy played good football despite his confidence being shattered when Tabs came back as he was the third target.

The club on the whole has gone down the path of good ball users in the last 2 off seasons. Unfortunately for Tabs he is not a good ball user. He plays he best football as a high leading CHF and as often turns the call over

I have heard from one of the medical staff that he’ll be training fully in January but will obviously need extra fitness work to get to the level required. I hope he was right

Peter Bell said the same thing when interviewed last Saturday morning on 882. Hagdorn asked him if he had had any set backs and Belly said no.

More Harley updates today, please training watchers.

Also, why is Cerra doing a lot of work away from the main group? Did he have off season surgery?

Fyfe, Mundy and Banfield.

Fyfe, Mundy and Banfield.

I was referring to the semi full time position of a Fwd flanker, Fyfe and Mundy role through that area, but dare I say it but it requires a full time position..not that dissimilar to a LeCras, Stephenson, Hayward etc style.

Harley would be great at it... if we could get him up and going!

If last season was any indication, they will only make fleeting cameos in the forward 50. The rest of the time they’ll be on the wings or at half back applying pressure.
Yeah. I would like to see a taller presence available for the get-out kicks a bit more, but we need to have the right set-up on the ground around them as well. That was lacking last year. I don't know if we were setting up out of position or weren't working hard enough to get to the contest. We were probably always trying to get free.

I think I read somewhere earlier in preseason that the fitness staff are trying to build his endurance base to help him run out games more.

Ross Lyon mentioned at the AGM that Matera has trimmed down 2kg and beat last years 2k time trial by 17 seconds - is this reflected on the track?

if they could get the hint and stop playing him as a HFF when he is a forward pocket that would be great.

the Honeymoon is over for the new boys and they’re all out there this morning. They all joined the early drills before moving onto their separate running programs with Darcy and Conca.
Hogan and Tucker on light duties. Both did the sandpit before having a quick kick. Hogan seems to be doing more and more kickingeach session.
Sonny and Collyer in the gym.
Didn’t see Kersten,McCarthy,Meek, Pearce or Bennell but I have a history of missing the odd one or two
S Hill and Mundy doing a heap of running. Mundy didn’t seem keen to kick the Ball early but that may not mean anything.
Loving the intensity of some of our forwards at training. Cox looks fit and switched on, swita buzzing around everywhere and Tabs looking great.
Of the newbies, Sturt looked a bit nervous and shanked a few early. Valente was put in Sandis group doing clearance work which is awesome. He has an awesome kick on both legs.
Absolutely love Schulz. He runs through the ball when marking over head and has incredibly strong hands and intensity that could teach the older boys a thing or two.
Bewley ran down B Hill at full speed which is very impressive.
Lots of short sharp pressure drills where the skills looked great under intense pressure.
I left early again so hopefully the other viewers can shed light on the last part of the session and, of course, the loads that I missed.
