So why are we chasing him - surely, we have rolled the dice enough on Linc, Adams, Birch and Joe. We seem to be really pushing the envelope.

Perhaps his athleticism has held up pretty well despite the injuries.

Because they are good players that can be bought cheap. Calculated risk/reward.

Did you see the footage of him playing in the second's from earlier this year? Was still very explosive and fast and was breaking the lines and breaking tackles with relative ease.

What’d you give up for McCarthy? Seems like a pretty similar situation.

BrisbaneMcCarthy (41 games) + #54 (Hind - 21 games) + #57 (-)83 XG
Geelong#42 (#45 - Cavarra - 3 games) + #60 (#56 - Hore - 14 games)33 XG

It will be a simple trade but one probably left u till last, simply because it isn't important to get it done. More than likely we will give up whatever our highest pick is that isn't being used.

I was going to mention, Cockatoo played in the reserve scratch matches all year, while up here.

He wasn’t actually injured this year. So the club will have had a good look at him.

Geelong didn’t play him in the seniors, as they knew he was off, and not part of the future.

Geelong are usually good to deal with and so are we.
Cockatoo went at pick 10 in 2014 draft and has played 34 games in 6 years with 11 in his first year

Injuries - repeated hamstring injuries then 2 PCL injuries in the one year 2018
The Lions look like they want to take the risk with Cockatoo and i believe Geelong offered him 1 year as they know he is a risk but has talent
.
I don't see how Geelong could be asking for more than our 69 or thereabouts.
Players that come with risk or baggage usually go at a big discount.
Hogan just went to your other club GWS for 54. Hogan at least played 7 games for Freo last year including the last 4. Salary dump maybe?.

We will be paying Cockatoo's salary for at least 2 years i suspect, so all the risk is with the Lions. Risk v possible reward.
His last AFL game was on 8/4/2018 so assuming he makes our round 1 side in 2021 it will be just on three years between AFL games
He did play some second's games in 2020 until he had to get a wrist operation. At least it was not his hamstrings or PCL.

Geelong may be asking more but i don't think we should pay more. Time will tell i suppose.
Trading players for draft picks has now changed due to the reduction of list sizes and probability of a shortened draft.

Clubs are going to want picks that are actually useful now.

No good accepting pick 69 if there’s going to be less than 60 picks in the draft.

Clubs will be asking for a 3rd round pick in such trades now.

It's a good point you make, but future picks will be the focus of clubs now more than ever.

That is good to hear, I wasn't aware of that. It does put my mind a rest a little.

You are possibly correct in the assumption that far less picks will be used this year.
Clubs usually do a pick swap to get the trade done no matter how insignificant the trade is.
Although Birchall came to us with no compensation to the Hawks. This was after he was offered a 1 year rookie deal by them.

But you still need a pick to move a rookie player onto the primary list. So this could be on traded by Geelong
And pick 69 is still worth 49 points to someone

Ok so right now we have 39 Senior Listed Players (including the 4 OOCs), and 3 Rookies (Archie, Madden, Fullarton)

Assuming the 38 + 6 final list sizes are correct:

- Cox OUT
- Cockatoo IN
- Fullarton Promoted
- B Coleman IN
- Additional Mandatory Draft Pick IN
- Uosis IN (Rookie)

That leaves us with 42 senior and 3 rookies. I assume we could put 3 senior guys onto the rookie list as well, hypothetically maybe MacFadyen, Joyce, Mathieson for example.

That would still leave us one player over the limit which tells me that in all likelihood we will have to make an additional delisting (unless we trade Witherden). I wonder who'd be squeezed out, maybe Stef? :(

I can’t see Lester being cut. If nothing else, the optics of delisting a current consistent top 22 player while trading in players with massive injury risks is skewwiff (is this still a saying?).

Have you heard something re Jed Anderson because I haven't seen anything about him, are you thinking a 3 way trade?

I really like Anderson and think he would be a great addition to our list.

Heard the other day that North love him (on and off field) and wouldn't entertain a trade.

We have unlimited late picks (well technically only 38 if we delisted everyone) to upgrade a rookie.

We don’t need to trade any picks in to upgrade rookies.

We could trade out all our picks in rounds 1 to 5, and we would still have exactly the same number of picks available to us as we have available list spots.

They would just be in round 6 and later, and the last picks in the draft.

So, you don’t ever need to trade in any picks, ever, to upgrade a rookie.

Hawks got no compensation for Birchall as he was over 30, but yes even the smallest amount of points can help.

I think it's more if Witho isn't seen as best 22 at this stage (which based on this season, he isn't) and on a very decent wage, it needs to be justified. Less or a salary dump and more what's best for both parties. Hope he stays though.
Witho trade (if he wants to go) serves two purposes, does free up some salary space and provides Witho an opportunity to play regular AFL elsewhere. Lions probably see themselves in the premiership window, and very likely in the near future face salary cap issues, to keep a very competitive team. For example two recent high profile signings of Andrews and Daniher would be close to $1.8m a season, many other young guys, but just to name two, Bailey and Starc, will need upgrades. Most if not all the players released thus far provide little salary cap relieve.
