Headings: 2021 Draft Profiles, 2021 Power Rankings (Nov latest one), AFL & AFLW Draft, State Leagues & News
An overall good site
They also do Basketball, Netball, Combat, & Tennis for anyone interested
They are actually calling it Rookie Me Central but the web address is the other way around

AFL mock draft from Cal Twomey & Kevin Sheehan

Cal had both Lions picks and chose 2 half backs as he thinks we are in need of halfbacks

Pick 16 Darcy Wilmot & Pick 21 Campbell Chesser
Are we actually in need of halfbacks though? In need of outside run but across halfback we've already got Starc, Coleman, Answerth, Rich, Prior and Ah Chee who can all contribute there.

Further evidence by our CEO Greg Swan today on The Roar Deal, indicating that the club will be selecting the best available players still on the board by the time our Pick 14 (16) & 18 (20) comes around, no matter what position they play on the field:

Swann said the Club would enter the draft with a firm policy of taking the best player available at each of their selections.

“Our theory is we will trade for need and we pick the best players as they come along,’’ he said.

“We don’t use the draft to plug gaps.

“Steve, Leon and Dom have rated them all and we’ll pick them off as the go, so whether it’s a mid, a back a forward or a tall, whatever it is we have a list and when it comes to our turn we will pick the best player.

How did we end up at 21?
Did we trade back.

How did we end up at 21?
Did we trade back.
Some other team possibly bidding on Mitch Owens and the as a result, pushing our second pick of the draft back to 21.

Did Fletcher play in those games? I don't recall him doing so and I can't remember McMillan either.

For a good idea of these guys you wanted to be watching the Champs match and the QAFL. I am sure they watched the former but unless you had someone on the watch list going in it usually takes a while to really pick up on someone playing well and start watching for their involvement as well. As an individual it is hard to watch and evaluate many during a match. At the Champs most clubs will have numerous scouts at games and each scout will usually have a job to concentrate on 4 or so guys. Trying to watch how guys move off the ball etc takes focus away from others and watching everyone is virtually impossible.

In fairness though Rookie Me aka Draft Central has really come on and do a great job.
Looking back at previous conversations about the February games, Fletcher played. No mention of McMillan. Other kids to be mentioned were Hollier, Barry, Harrop and Doyle.

I can’t find the Lions Academy FB page I was following anymore, to check the team sheets. Looks like the privacy settings have been changed.

Considering the complaints in the QAFL thread about Lions academy kids being pulled out of their clubs for the academy series, I wouldn’t be surprised if they all played.

I think the "amateur" side of draft analysis has come a long way and so I'm not knocking the people who do it. But surely it is not unreasonable to suggest that clubs usually have access to more information and, in a year with limited games and so limited footage, the fact that clubs can conduct draftee interviews, meet with families, speak to schools, speak to coaches and maybe even get some other sneaky intel creates a larger knowledge gap for the non-club watchers to overcome.
That’s all valid.

All I was saying that some of the draft watchers don’t really fit in to the amateur status any more.

I know clubs so far more extensive interviews, asking different questions, but AFL Draft Central has been at the last few years preseason NAB League testing days, and interviewed dozens and dozens of boys and girls each year for their site. And I know they have interviewed coaches on their podcast before.

At the end of each year they produce a Draft Guide. Last years Fox Sports coverage saw the presenters repeatedly referring to their copies on their desk. And I’ve been told clubs also get copies.

I’m pretty sure some of the draft watchers also have access to Champion Data U18 stats, from what I have heard.

I think you have to follow the draft watchers, and listen to their podcasts to know how in-depth they go.

Fletcher played against the Northern Knights in the NAB League which is when I first noticed him, McMillan played v Gold Coast in the U19s in about June as well, both played in preseason games v the Suns that are all on youtube, just a pain in the ass to find at times

This is pretty much exactly why I would move up to 13 if possible for the right price, hopefully the draft doesn't go like this on draft night as we just miss out on the second tier of players. I like our picks for who's available though.

There's always a curve ball selection or two in the first 15 picks each year, so I would highly doubt it goes as they have selected. For starters, I don't see St Kilda selecting Mac Andrew.

I think we are in desperate need of speed and creativity across half back. Wingmen as well. I would double down no problems. The only run and carry player you have mentioned there is Coleman. Prior isn’t quick. Nice kick but he doesn’t run and break lines. I would be happy with Chesser and Wilmot (prefer brown). Chesser and brown can also play mid/ wing I reckon in future. The others are kickers or shut down players. Our attacking drive from the back half is poor against the top teams. They slow us up and we are pinned in our own half. Means are our mids need to dominate to beat the best teams.

These were their selections for teams on a needs basis not who they think might end up where.
So it will likely turn out differently.
Can’t really see Freo passing on Erasmus either, or West Coast taking NWM.

I think the majority of our best transition play comes from good kicking rather than speed, unfortunately Birch had lost a lot of penetration in his kicking and didn't bite off many kicks that would allow us to move the ball quickly, I think putting someone in his role that is willing and able to make more attacking plays will make a huge difference to how quickly we can move the ball.

We also got to remember that Rich will be 32 next year as well, meaning that he will have 2-3 years in him (at most) before he retires. Therefore, given the fact that Starcevich will probably take over the Birchall role from us in 2022 and beyond, with his excellent kicking skills (club quote) and his ability to lock-down the opposition's best small forward as well, I think the club would be silly not to use one of those 1st rounder picks (14 & 18) to snare a half-back with excellent foot skills & speed (Sinn, Chesser, Wilmot) to help fill the void of Rich in our Best 22 in the long-term future (2025+), but also in the short-term provide internal competition within the club, for our young players already eyeing a spot in our Best 22 squad in the half-back & D50 structure now (Ah Chee, J.Prior, N.Answerth, K.Coleman, J.Madden).

I believe Ah Chee should stay forward. I’ve been a big advocate that Prior should at least have first crack at filling Birchall’s role.

Still, we will need an heir for Rich.

My view is Wilmot is an upgrade on Answerth. He’s faster, has better skills, offers better rebound and is a hard nut as well.

Chesser can play wing or halfback, and there might be the potential for him to play midfield as well.

Chesser probably would be that Rich replacement, while Wilmot could potentially come in and after putting on some size, take over from Starcevich as a lockdown defender, allowing Starcevich to move in to the midfield.

Meh, will always be surprises on draft night, this year maybe even more than usual. Last year Twomey published his first round prediction a couple of days out from the draft, even with all his mail there were three players he predicted would go top 20 that didn't.

While I didn’t necessarily agree with some of the selections to certain teams, the first 15 players are who I consider to be the top 15 players, and I can certainly see them all gone before our first pick.
Very rare for any phantom drafter to nail all first round selections to the correct club and order, even harder with bids and draft night pick trades on offer, reasonable chance that one of Johnson, Sinn or Goater could fall to our first selection.
I believe the most likely players who might drop out of the top 15 there are Rachelle, Wanganeen-Milera and Andrew.

We would the other 2 I am sure but would we pick Mac Andrew if he was still there????

Again just my opinion, the best players left on board at our first pick were Sonsie, Chesser and Wilmot.

With our top three father son/academy kids for next year being mids or mid forwards, Chesser and Wilmot would be two kids I’d be happy with.
