As it appears to be a passionate topic (and for good reason), can as many of you as possible ask the coach where Chapman is playing long-term and whether he's planned to move into the middle?

As a president of the "Move Chapman to the Middle" fan club, the logic makes sense to me.
  • We have a lot of quality down back (on paper at least) so losing him from there shouldnt impact too badly
  • He would address an area of need in what is basically the most important are of ground (the middle). His speed, size and skill is unicorn stuff that we dont have much of at the moment. Size is a particular concern within the next couple of years.

Does he need to move now? No, but I there is an uncanny resemblance to Fyfe when he first started where he already looks ridiculously good and you can see a picture of what midfield Chapman looks like in your head and God damn does it look good
Oi who voted you president? I've been banging on about it for a long time. This has all the hallmarks of a Balkan war with spurious territorial claims and puppet heads of state

Hmmm, I think I do remember you being equally as excited last year over his first few games, I remember specifically discussing with others about his kicking which some didnt see as being elite. After the two pre-season games so far, I think he's had 1 or two bad kicks amongst a truck load of clever chip ricks and 45m play opening bullets. He will be the best kick in our team starting round 1 next year

Also, as I know a lot of you completely ignore stickies accidentally, make sure you sign-up to be a round previewer. The prize (badge and year of premium) is terrific and we are all awesome at getting around the work performed, however its delivered.

Sign-up!!!

I'm excited by the complete package, personally I wouldn't even say kicking is the strongest part of it though he is obviously a very good kick. He really could become something special.

Pearce, Logue,Cox and Ryan is plenty tall enough down back. Would love Chapman on The wing instead of Acres. This frees Walker up to play a HB role.

We need to find a role for Walker he is too good for Peel. Clark and Walker running off HB wowee

Even better for me would be Chapman, Clark and Walker rotating through wing/hbf.

I looked pretty good doing a walk in the park but the hike was tougher.
I'd just rather someone who is inconsistent but has elite skills to someone who is inconsistent, 27 yrs old, and has regular cat 10 turn overs but is BUTT every pre-season.

The fat side wing really is the hardest position in football. You're expected to be the outlet kick out of defence, the loose option for run and spread then get back and defend when horribly out of position, because being out of position IS your position going forward. You're also the first to get blamed if the other team isn't being pressured enough

Give Henry time to work into the position at AFL level before assigning him official scapegoat status
Fat side? What on earth are you on about? If you are playing wing you have to run and spread to provide an option when we have the ball. Unless there is a 40 knot side wind then both wing players have to do this equally. From the games I have watched Henry does not chase hard enough or put pressure on frantically enough. Could be a fitness thing. Could be a mindset thing, but has nothing to do with fat side, skinny side or whatever buzz word you come up with.

No, that's not me saying that. I am paraphrasing freo99.
What I heard him say in responding to a question on being drafted as a HBFer, was that he had
he had played a number of other positions but recently his game had been at HBF.

I took it to mean that he didn’t want to be left at HBF + probs preferred other positions.

I think it will be more of the same for him. Doesn't appear to be any other plan. With Clark, Wilson and Chapman that should prove to be amongst the AFLs best rebounding defences.

Fat side is the name for that half of the ground that seems to be avoided by both teams moving the ball. Both teams tend to use the northern, broadcast wing to move the ball more than the southern wing.

One winger is usually up against the boundary and doesn't have as much space to work with so he is more contested, the other has about 70m of grass behind him into the other boundary to try and break into clear space to get involved in a switch.

Or that's there's lots of competition for HBF and he's happy and capable to be flexible.

He's got a pretty good pedigree down back, just look at his club profile:

Chapman had an outstanding 2020 where he developed as an intercepting defender after playing mostly as a lock-down defender in 2019 for West Perth. He captained the West Perth colts side in 2020 and won their best and fairest. Chapman’s competitiveness stands out because he simply hates being beaten. He was the no.1 rated key defender in the WAFL colts in 2020 and was ranked no.1 for intercept marks and spoils. Chapman made his WAFL league debut in round eight in 2020, impressing with 11 disposals and 3 intercept marks. The 18-year-old recorded the fastest time 2km time trial at the WA Combine with an impressive 6 minutes and 20 seconds, which ranked ninth nationally.

Walker simply isn’t as good as half this board thinks he is…yet.

We need quantity as well as quality from Walker. Until he has more disposals he doesn’t have the some impact over four quarters any of Young, Chapman, Clark or Wilson have - and most are leaving Wilson out. Ryan isn’t brilliant at moving the footy imo (should be but needs to hurry the **** up a lot of the time)but when he’s getting 20-25 touches a game and intercepting like a beast he’s still one of the best medium defenders in the business.

It’ll be very hard for Walker to get games without injuries in 2022. He gets the ball a little more and he’s in the conversation with those above. At the moment he isn’t despite what he does do being rather impressive.

Man Walker was about the only thing that brought a smile to my face in a couple of games last year. I'm thinking of that abomination of a home game against Brisbane for one, when we got eviscerated and the pregame entertainment was a bunch of drunks from Albany singing sea shanties.
I agree he is not playing round 1 but the bloke really pleasantly surprised last year

I was very impressed and was surprised how well he did do tbh but we’ve got five very good small-medium defenders to fit into the side NOT including Walker. 12-14 very exciting disposals doesn’t beat what Ryan, Clark, Young, Chapman and Wilson can offer. Wilson’s injury makes it easy but we were staring down the barrel of leaving one of these guys out.

I know some people are still pissed off at Wilson for his diabolical last month of last season but once we gave him a new contract it was time to give him another chance imo. His previous three years he was our most dangerous rebounding defender and easily. He easily belongs in the conversation with the other four if fit.

I thought Walker looked like the most likely to lock down on the best/fastest opposition small forward. I suppose Logue is the other option for that. Think I'd prefer Walker for agility and speed though.

Ok, let’s concede that teams that play at Optus more often use the northern side of the ground to move the ball. (Absolute codswollop), then that “advantage” would exist also for your opponents which you would want to nullify. This idea that certain wingers just play on the “fat” side is a load of rubbish.

If you read my last post I know what fat side means. Unless there is a howling 40 knot wind however, I do not think that one winger (Henry) is more often in space than the other. Therefore, why is it used as justification that he plays the hardest position on the ground?
Well the first quarter on the weekend was crushed up against the side he started on, and he's not built to be that skinny side winger. Acres can play both roles and was on the open side, suddenly he looked better.

These things aren't disconnected
