We’ve really been screwed not getting two games against the Bombers over the last 8 years when they’ve been at their most putrid.
Or the Tigers when they were our bunnies for a fair while, before they came good again :p

Also there will be some easy kills in that bottom 6 you would think, getting the Hawks, Kangas, Eagles or Giants as a double up potentially twice is nice.

Knowing the AFL. I reckon we will end up with the Lions as one of the teams we play twice. Gotta sell the Dunk and Dogs match day story line.

Wouldn't magic round need to be an additional game for each club on top of the usual 22? Otherwise there's going to be 9 teams who only get 10 home games.
What is the rationale for magic round? Is it just that the NRL has it so AFL want it too?
Is the only reason to have 9 more games to sell to broadcasters??
I can’t see that it will boost attendances, even if it was held in Melbourne and Sydney would be a real loss. Must be the tv rights deal.

1. NRL is doing it and we can't be seen to be upstaged by those pissants.
2. Pre-season games have become less important for clubs, meaningless in terms of competition and deliver far less in terms of public attention and clicks so we might as well replace it with something meaningful that won't upset the AFLPA in terms of length of season.
3. Slight improvement in the inequalities of the draw (6 double-up games instead of 5 ... in a perfect world it would be 17)
4. Increased revenue for the AFL and broadcasters (this is really THE number 1 reason IMO ... The First Commandment)
5. You can never have enough gimmicks for modern footy fans who are time-poor and have short attention spans (if you've read this far it doesn't apply to you)

Tying the increased funding of clubs to the introduction of Magic Round tells us a fair bit about revenues. Multiply what the AFL is offering ($500k?) by 18 and then consider the AFL would make substantially more than that ($9m?) from the round.

If it wasn't for that annoying sport of cricket tying up some important venues I reckon the AFL would just go full tilt at a 34 round H&A season. It works for the EPL after all ... but then they have rectangular pitches instead of ovals.

We played Collingwood away this year..... at Marvel

I'm hoping to get more MCG games, and more games vs crowd heavy weights this season. Hence would love Bombers, Tigers and Magpies as double ups. But the AFL will probably throw 5 of those 6 games at Marvel, they do it every year. It's a small advantage for us I guess, but still.

It won't be to long now before parts of the fixture start getting drip fed. Really keen to know our double ups, interstate trips, prime time opponents, magic round opponent, how many MCG games etc. Do we still get to play Good Friday?

Would not mind seeing us play Sydney and Freo in Ballarat as a fresh change. But cannot see the AFL making a Perth team travel that extra distance.

Ballarat will be 2 of Crows Power or Suns. Surely they have us play Brissy in Melbourne to attract a bigger crowd. We can only hope for 3 MCG games max (Tigers, Dees, Pies) as any away game v. Carlton, Essendon, Hawthorn will be played at Marvel.

Death, taxes and Geelong in ****ing Geelong. EVERY year. Probably doubled-up, too.

Guarantee we'll also have to play Brisbane and Port as double-ups. Freo in Perth seems likely too.

As someone already posted in another thread. We play Melbourne Saturday Night at the MCG to open the season. Safe to say it is highly likely they will be one of our double ups.

Feels like the AFL is desperately trying to make some kind of rivalry or some BS. That is 3 seasons in a row we will double up vs them, and 4 of the last 6 seasons (2023) included. Mix it up you bums.

My gut feel is that Brisbane will more likely be our other double up team from the top 6 section.

We won’t necessarily double up against Melbourne just because we play them round 1. Here’s hoping to a couple of more games at the G throughout the year though, spread evenly too.

So what we know ....

Round 1 vs Dees at the MCG
Round 5 vs Port at Adelaide Oval as part of Magic Round (not sure if this advantages or disadvantages us - we'll be one of only two teams playing genuine home sides that round)

Fine with that, is just a regular away game for us. Also good to not play in the middle of nowhere in the Barossa or Mount Barker.

Where was the Port Adelaide match posted? Looked every where thinking more of the fixture had been released.
