We’re not horrible but we lack some experience and composure. Hopefully these losses don’t dent the confidence to an extent where they drop off as they are really having a crack.

Some players under the spotlight - Whitfield has lost his confidence, he can bounce back as he has so much talent but he’s a shadow of his former self. Idun has been a bit average since re-signing, he needs to lift. Flashes from Callaghan and Cadman, they will both be super.

Why do you rate Angwin?

From what I’ve seen he’s not agile, he’s not strong and he doesn’t seem to have any real weapons other than endurance? I hope I’m wrong but he seems a very vanilla player?
thought he was pretty good today.

Runs well, kicks well.

Yeah, lots of positives. . Just hope we can figure out what Whitfield needs to get his head right.

He still just isn't playing particularly confidently, or feel like he knows which option he wants to take, so turning it over way more than a player of his experience (and previous class) should.

Thoughts on him after todays game?

Outside runner with nice disposal and bit of creativity was where I had him. Birthday is mids December so was always going to be a slow burn being very young.

I always though he could be a victim of our poor team in the vfl in that being an outside runner he relies on the a strong inside mid brigade to feed it to him which the vfl doesn’t/hasn’t had. With a strong midfield and a bit more structure always thought it might allow him to showcase his strengths.

I thought we played well today.
A lot didnt go our way and we played a good side.

I think we are currently a middle of the road side with massive upside.

Brent Daniels a huge in for us.

We are starting to get together a group of role players. Always our weakness.

I think that Cadman and Callaghan are looking like being really, really good players really soon. Im really happy with Rowsten as well.

Cognilo, Kelly and Haynes are having really good seasons after copping some heat.

Cogs prob leading our BNF and Kelly would be if he didnt come off in rnd 1 and miss round 2

I almost feel with him it’s the culmination of a few things.

He has had some bad injuries, combination of contact injuries due to his courage and other injuries that have put wear and tear on his body. He’s lost a yard of pace and given he is not particularly strong it makes him vulnerable.

He has lost all confidence with his kicking. He has gone from the best kick in the club to nearly the worst. He can fix this but he has to fix his head first, like Cogs did.

Also, we fell off the cliff and the realisation we were no longer a finals team has damaged his motivation.

There is a chance he’s cooked but I think he can bounce. The long contract was the worst thing for him, it’s had a bad effect on his form/motivation.

Yeah - I think you've got this one pretty well pinned.

Will take faith in the turn around in form of both Haynes and Cogs.

C/- Useless AFL stats

Tom, Dick and Harry's. GWS will become the first team in 26,230 days to field 3 Harry's when Rowston, Himmelberg and Perryman take the field at Manuka Oval tomorrow. The last time three Harry's played for the same team was Carlton in Rd10 1951. The record for Harry's is four which last happened in 1921 by St Kilda. (Harry Grigg, Harry Kerley, Harry Lever, Harry Moyes)
Four Tom's has occurred several times with Geelong in 2017 the last team featuring Hawkins, Lonergan, Ruggles and Stewart.
Three Dicks has occurred just once being Rd 10 1937 when Essendon played Eason, Reynolds and Welch. No Dick has debuted since Dick Michalczyk for North Melbourne in 1973 meaning Essendon are likely to be holding the Dick record for a very long time.
Tom, Dick and Harry last played together in 1962 r13 for Sydney, who had Harry Alexander, Dick Burke and Tom Hynes

Pleased to see Daniels have a much better 2nd half after a rough start.

Cadman has made an impressive start, but I fear, like Himmelberg, he will become fodder for the Melbourne machine of picking the guts out of our talent.

Hogan is a frustrating character. Just wish he's have a solid game and not the 'box of chocolates' we get all too often.

XOH did OK. He's still all over the place with his disposal but can nail a kick at goal.

Our backline is obviously in disarray. Buckley now has to take the lead. Idun and Ash especially MUST lift their game.

If Leek Aleer has fully recovered, I'd suggest he'll be in for Taylor.

Kennedy most likely out for a while.

And here I was thinking at half time that Whitfield needs a run in the reserves to regain some confidence.

Too much going on in my head.......

Keeffe most likely to come in for Taylor.
Brisbane the biggest front running team you will see. No chance of winning the flag.
Some of the non calls from the umpires was astounding.
Also, notice how many times the Lions play for frees? They look for short cuts all the time.

Unless the move Harry back, and bring back Ricca, or throw Super Max (Gruzewski) in? Probably makes our tall forwards a little young though right ?!

They could also do what many here have been calling for, and play two rucks, resting Briggs forward (anyone know why he didn't play in the VFL?).

I liked the way we fought it out till the very end, but Brisbane retained a bit of a cushion from early on, and had the answers anytime we got a couple in a row.
We tried really hard to move it by hand, but rarely did we get to release that player into the open, and a lot of credit for that has to go to the Lions - they were shutting us right down more often than not.
But overall, wasn't all that bad, and they did have one very clear match winner.

I think our forward line is more a of problem than is mentioned. Since Daniels has come back it has better balance but the talls aren't quite working out. Cadman is developing so stay with him, Himmelberg does cameos as he is used all over the ground, but Hogan seems to be missing too often for the experienced hand he is. He takes contested marks but not always in the forward arc and kicks a few goals; but not when it's really needed. If you want contested marks in the forward 50 and clutch goals our go to tall is Toby. If we are going to be a 'middle-level team with upside', then we will presumably put some emphasis on playing youth. I would like to see Derksen come in for Taylor so that Himmelberg can go down back. O'Keeffe was ordinary against Coburg last week in the VFL and 'managed' this week. Aleer is just coming back from injury. Derksen has been in good form but didn't get amongst the goals today as he played as main ruck (sans Briggs), but still showed his mobility. Also having him and Harry means they can share the cut-out ruck duties. Riccardi did kick 4 goals in the VFL today but we have seen this before; he just doesn't seem to make the consistent step-up when in the seniors.

Aleer played VFL today but didn’t get much of the ball so hopefully it’s not injury related. Otherwise he should be the one that comes in. He was going to be the starting fullback (ahead of Buckley) in round 1 until he was a late out.

Leave HH forward and bring in Bedford so that we have more pace in the forward half to lock it in.

We could bring in Briggs or Derksen if sending Harry back is the best call. Swans are getting thrashed as we speak, it might depend on how tall they are next week.
I agree Bedford is a good in provided he played well today.
We get Tom Green back as well so that helps.
We just have to match todays efforts and i think we probably beat Sydney.

Sydney's backline is comparatively short due to Rampe and the McCartins being out.

For me, it's the perfect opportunity to play 2 rucks with one resting in the forward line or keep HH forward as at 6'4", he will cause problems for the shorter Sydney defenders.

As long as the mids deliver it quickly and make it more a one-on-one, I seriously think the Giants are in with a chance.

HH played all pre season as a forward and is playing alright there and chopping out in the ruck really well which he could t do down back.

We have Keefe, Aleer, fleeton and Davis due back next week who are all key backs. We need to give the forwards a chance to adjust to the new game plan and we don’t need HH down back now that Haynes is back playing well.

I think we need to move Perryman back to defence. The opp's smalls often lead the goalkicking tally (Rachele, Ranking, Jamie Cripps, Owies, obviously Cameron today) and we need a specialist lockdown defender. Idun and Cumming shouldn't be taking on the opposition's best small forward each week. I remember Hamilton played a bit of that role last year and was alright so maybe he could take that role.

Hard to 'lock it in' when the opposition mark almost every ball we kick in to our forward line

Highly doubt Davis will be ready to resume next week. He will be out for a while I would assume.
