We had a kid in our year named Wayne Carr. Had little man syndrome quite bad.
Ok... Back in the 90s, I used to work in a call-centre environment, where we would regularly get calls from across the Asia-Pacific region. There are two Asian names that stick in my mind - gonna spoiler this, coz... Well, anyway, it was sometimes hard to keep a straight face talking to these two.

AFL Draft 2024: Where 75 of the top prospects attended school

If you want your kid to play AFL, send them to these schools. Check out the data that shows where the top draft prospects are coming from in 2024.

They are the school footy factories which have produced this year’s crop of aspiring AFL stars.
These are 75 of the top draft prospects – and where they got their education.

Some — such as first-round locks Jagga Smith and Isaac Kako — finished high school in 2023 and have begun university degrees this year.

However, most are still finishing exams as the AFL national draft quickly approaches.

Brighton Grammar — which competes in Victoria’s Associated Public Schools (APS) competition — went unbeaten with a 10-0 record this season and looks set to have an unmatched number of draftees.
Levi Ashcroft, Luke Trainor and Harrison Oliver all shape as top-30 picks, while Josh Dolan, Lennox Hoffman and Bailey McKenzie are in mix to be picked up in the back half of the draft.

“Going 10-0 is something that’s pretty hard to do and a lot goes behind the scenes of it,” Trainor said.

“Even though we’ve got such a talented team, we nearly lost some games and it’s really hard work to win 10 games in a row.”

Previous Brighton Grammar draftees include Andrew McGrath, Josh Kelly, Christian Salem and Jack Watts.

Another school with a strong history of producing AFL players is St Patrick’s College in Ballarat.
It has been the breeding ground of 120 AFL/VFL players, including 2022 No. 1 draft pick Aaron Cadman, Richmond premiership star Daniel Rioli and former North Melbourne champion Drew Petrie.

This year, St Patrick’s College has four players firmly on the radars of recruiters, headlined by school captain Ollie Hannaford who has emerged as a top-30 hope.

Top-five draft prospect Finn O’Sullivan hails from the small town of Koroit in western Victoria but has been boarding at Xavier College for the past three years and lists the move as his biggest life achievement outside of football.
“Heading up to boarding school was a big stepping stone for me; something that I haven’t looked back on since,” O’Sullivan said.

“I’ve loved being up at boarding school and I’ve met countless mates who I’m really close with now.”

South Australian twins Ben and Lucas Camporeale have attended Sacred Heart College in Adelaide, where they have studied all of the same subjects this year.

“We’ve got the same subjects, but we’ve only got one class together,” Ben said.

“We’ve got business together, which is a bit of fun. But we try to stay out of each other’s pockets.”

The Camporeale brothers have both been nominated by Carlton as father-son prospects for the draft, being the sons of 1995 Blues premiership player Scott.

In Victoria’s Goulburn Valley, Jobe Shanahan used to see 2023 No. 1 draft pick Harley Reid around the schoolyard at St Joseph’s College in Echuca.
Another set of twins – Jack and Matt Whitlock – have also been studying the same subjects at Goulburn Valley Grammar School in Shepparton.
“We’ve always been pretty hard working in school and we’re at a pretty academic school,” Jack said.
Brownlow Medal winner Ollie Wines was a graduate of Goulburn Valley Grammar in 2012, while Clayton Oliver and Alex Keath are among other students from the school who have made it to the AFL.

I like the look of Clancy Dennis as a backman, would be happy for Geelong to take him with one of our picks. Also I see a Dennis named in the training squad for next years state side (as well as a Van Rooyen) is that his brother? Could be an extra reason to choose him.

Younger brother yes. Projects even better than Clancy.

LOCAL FOOTY BOLTER’S ‘CRAZY’ RISE FROM OBSCURITY

Alix Tauru may be the biggest bolter of this year’s draft class, but no prospect has come from further back than local footy smokey Sam Toner.
The Narre Warren product had never been part of a representative program when he joined the Dandenong Stingrays mid-year as an over-age player, and now he appears destined to be drafted.
Toner, who turned 19 last week, received the call-up to the Stingrays after booting 50 goals in 13 senior games with Narre Warren in the Outer East league, also slotting 53 majors in 19 matches at under-19 level for them last season.
The exciting forward has been linked to several clubs – particularly Fremantle and GWS – after turning heads with five goals in just his second game for the Stingrays against the Eastern Ranges.
He kicked 10 goals in his first three games in the Coates Talent League before suffering a wrist injury in his fourth appearance.
Toner tested at the state combine this month and showed significant improvement in his 2km time trial and ran an impressive agility test of 8.27 seconds.
Clubs are excited by Toner’s upside as an untapped talent who has only spent half a year in the elite talent pathway, with several possible suitors in the back-half of the draft.

Sam Toner has rapidly emerged as an unlikely draft prospect from Narre Warren. Picture: Josh Chadwick
Dandenong Stingrays key defender Noah Mraz believes clubs should take a punt on him.
“Crazy, isn’t it. Cool story. Local player, over-ager too and just picked up and just came in and didn’t miss a beat,” Mraz said.
“He’s a great player, great bloke too. Just works real hard as well and you can see, don’t have a big sample size on him but you know what you’ve seen hasn’t been bad.
“I think if someone takes a chance on him I don’t think they’d be disappointed. I think he’s a great player too.”
Stingrays co-captain Cooper Hynes, a potential first-round prospect himself has also enjoyed watching his rise from obscurity.
“He came in about halfway through the year and trained with us and we are like, ‘who is this new bloke?’ This over-ager, didn’t know what to think of him,” Hynes said.
“Then he sort of debuted at Seaford, had some really good moments and was really good. And then the next week against Eastern he kicked five, sort of burst onto the scene a bit. He’s got some tricks.”
The Stingrays have another over-age player who could also be taken as a later draft selection or rookie in Riak Andrew, the younger brother of Gold Coast excitement machine Mac.
Melbourne has first dibs on Andrew as a member of its Next Generation Academy but the Demons only has picks five and nine in this year’s draft.
Andrew is seven centimetres shorter than Mac at 194cm, but has impressed with his lockdown roles this year as a key defender.

The afl is becoming an elitist sport run by old boys. More and more players are from private schools. The tac cup or whatever its called, should be scrapped with a school system

Unpopular opinion, but are the ashcrofts basically the same player and brisbane need 2 of the same ?

I think for he's development he'd be better playing elsewhere. But you don't let a good player go either, it might make him a better footballer, trying to break into the lions side and get midfield minutes too

Nah, Levi is better going forward, Will is faster.

Luke Urquhart gets picked up, surely. That level of competitor can't go undrafted
I'm starting to worry. There is no love for WA players this year.

In 2025 I'm stepping things up because WA has a very talented group.

But I need some help from Victorians!

What is everyone's take on Luke Trainor?

Can seriously play the game but those pesky head knocks are the sticking point.

Would you be happy to take him and if so how high?

With all our picks I'd be happy to take him with 18 IF he slid that far, huge if though.

Hayes should get drafted, has that rare speed/endurance combo

Urquhart’s kicking is a big concern but could still see him getting taken same with Boxshall with his elite testing certainly helping him.

Davis and Gerreyn should still go in the top 50 and I think Aiden Riddle is a chance for a club wanting a young competitive ruck
