Lets be reality. The year is cooked as cooked can get. Its pre the draft/trade period and we have seen almost everyone play. So question is. What is our best 22 now and what will it be post draft/trade period and also what has changed over the past 5 months in your mind leading in to 2024. For me the changes ive come to are

  • Jack Williams is best 22. He is our best option for that 2nd ruck and is a fantastic size
  • Maric will be best 22 after a pre season. The kid is remarkably underdone fitness wise now but he provides a point of difference to the forward line with his field kicking. In a ideal world Liam Ryan can take his spot and Maric can be a bit closer to goal/the forward 50.
  • Sheeds drop off has been next level. After Round 1 id never dream of having him borderline 22 but here we are. While Id have him in my pre draft 22. I dont think he survives the cut
  • Petch has been a bigger riser for me in terms of the versatile role player. His time in the midfield has really sparked my interest in keeping him in the 22 to provide that cover for a ton of spots
  • I hate to see it or say it but Yeos time as a midfielder appears over. Lets just be happy that we have a potential All Australian defender
  • Hewett with a pre season is a starting midfielder

So all said and done id go with

FB: Cole, Barass, Hough
HB: Jones, McGovern, Yeo
C: Gaff, Kelly, Hunt
HF: Ryan, Darling, Cripps
FF: Williams, Allen, Long
R: Williams, Hewett, Ginbey
I/C: Maric, Petch, Duggan, Sheed

Post draft and pre season I can see

  • If we can draft 2 players like Reid and Curtin then Sheed and Duggan are in big trouble.
  • Hunt/Petch could be competing for that same role as a tweener to play any of the flank roles
  • Gaff starts on the wing after a strong showing at the end of the year but ideally come end of the year Edwards/Chesser/a better version of Sheed can move him aside

The midfield is still complete trash in the above and so when we hit the draft, that is hopefully the area we address.

Probably time to get this thread going post-draft.

Here's what I'd like to see, assuming full squad availability & some positional moves (Waterman as intercepting defender swingman role for one).

AFL Best 23
FB: Cole Barrass Duggan
HB: Yeo McGovern Petruccelle
C: Chesser H.Reid Hunt
HF: Hewett Darling Long
FF: Ryan Allen Cripps
R: Flynn Kelly Ginbey
I: B.Williams Hall Brockman Jones (Hough)

Beagles Best 23
FB: Witherden Bazzo Waterman
HB: Baker H.Edwards Burgiel
C: Gaff Trew L.Edwards
HF: Maric J.Williams Johnston
FF: Rawlinson A.Reid Dewar
R: Barnett Sheed Culley
I: Livingstone Rotham Jamieson Ruscoe (ammo #1)

On paper we have good, experienced lines at either end with an exciting engine.
Good times not far away!

The Beagles 22 made up of AFL squad players.

So far from how the last 2 years have been. What a huge toll injuries have had on the team.

We had Dewar and Baker (Cat B rookies) as the only AFL squad players playing in the Beagles for a fair part of last year.

What a disaster. One of Pyke’s many task’s to fix.

Hate to he a party pooper but Gaff and Sheed will start round 1 - do I agree no! But that's the reality.

I'm ok with it provided if they don't perform there dropped

If we can stay healthy the Beagles looking strong too

Assuming we scrap the sub rule and have 5 on the bench as been spoken about.

Yeoy if fit and body is going well is our best midfielder and will be required to help out Reuben, Hewett and Reid. If we can manage to get him available to play midfield time then I am certain Sheed won't play.

Potentially to small in the back half, but the way the game is played it is not often defenders are isolated one on one so shouldnt be a major issue. Yeoy to spend some time down to give coverage.

Rotate Petch, Reid, Hewett all through half forward and mid.

FB - Cole Barrass Hough
CHB - JJones McGovern Duggan

C - Chesser Kelly Hunt
R Flynn Yeo Hewett

CHF - Cripps Darling Long
FF - BWilliams Allen Ryan

Int Hunt (Back), Reid, Ginbey, Petch (Mids), Brockman (Fwd)

Next in
Back - Bazzo, Witho
Mid - Hall Sheed Burgeil Gaff
Forward - Maric, Waterman

Who'd have thought a team full of amateurs, led by 2 kids who aren't yet even at WAFL level would struggle............

Time to look at what our Best 22 will look like for Round 1.
Here's my go:

C: Ginbey, Kelly, Cripps
HF: Maric, Darling, Long

A good preseason from Hall and he might not be far off round 1.

For reference this was our team in Round 24 last year:

Missing Yeo, Ginbey, Hewett, Long and Maric who will all be best 22 at rd 1 if fit.

Plus no way you can have Duggan, Witho, Cole and Jones in the same backline!!

FB: Cole, Barrass, Hough
HB: Yeo, McGovern, Duggan
C: Chesser, Kelly, Hunt

FF: Long, Darling, Ryan

I: B.Williams, Cripps, Burgiel, one of Sheed/Gaff
S: Jones/Sheed/Gaff/Hall

Most likely both Sheed and Gaff play round 1, but ive put just one in, does leave the midfield very young looking though.
Yeo can act as our 3rd tall defender, hes big enough for that I think. Hopefully Burgiel has some luck with injuries and can play some sort of flank/wing role early in the season.
Would like to put Maric in but I dont know how to fit him in the forward line, Allen and Darling will play and Bailey is required to be the chop out ruckman.
Maybe Darling starts to get "rested" regularly to give other players opportunities, same with Gaff and Sheed

Those saying Gaff & Sheed will be RD 1 are forgetting a New CEO. Clay Hall, Harley Reid, Burgiel etc a lot of pressure on them old slow farts. WCE have had a big clean out of officials.

The Selection Board needs to start at 0.
Pre-Season earn your jumper.

Beagles do look stronger even with those mid agers gone funnily enough.

That's right - ROTHAM!
I'm freakin bullish on ROTHAM.

And most of the outs by end of the season aren't a skill issue, just an age/future issue.

No thanks to Rotham.
