Wouldn't mind it, played there when at the Dogs VFL side.

Handy versatility with Boyd and Williams
Would love Boyd to be our replacement "burst out of stoppages" midfield replacement for someone currently on our list who in all likelihood won't be there next year.

Dow to the swans would be a terrific move for him SCG would suit his game style, maybe a 3 way trade with fisher and Stephens to North Dow to swans and draft picks/ upgrade picks to the blues hopefully one of the one the afl just gave north would be a great result for us.

Rubbish. You take away posters that respond to what they believe is a tide of incorrect, pointless or ignorant posts and all you have is an unimpeded, even greater pile-on. Long live the resistance!

I’m not sure he’s big enough as a key back. He could probably be trialled as a third back.
As another poster has mentioned, the gulf between Weitering and the other key defensive options is large and a concern.
He's the same size as Lever, taller than May, much taller than Sicily and Doedee, and heavier than all of those except May, even though he looks more lightly framed.

This has been what my wife has listened to me say (or scream at the telly) all season.

Can't have it all overnight but I agree that this is 100% our achilles heel.
100% takes years to put together a well drilled all ground excellent football team ...especially when starting from such a low team based game which was focussed on 4-5 star players doing 'star' things to achieve honourable losses...

I think people forget what a basket case the team was before Voss introduced them to the quaint notion of the importance of tackling...we forget he inherited this "'top4' and should win a flag yesterday list" ...all he has done since is loaded up on runners and ditched the softies...as fast as he could - got to about a 60% winning record- whilst having most of his midfield go in for major surgery copped season ending injuries to Wiliams - fixed McGovern/Marchbank and even Cuningham, played first year players and mid season picks like Hollands/Boyd/Cincotta/DUrdin/Motlop/Cowan - oh and we haven't 'lost' a player of note either...

but yeah - sacK vOsS....is still a meme in here - despite already being the most successful coach the Club has had in 20 years...how very 'old Carltom' these modern football exponents are...

The transition game- is the next frontier- there will be blokes dropped if they cant improve that - I have no doubt.

We beat Port, Collingwood, St Kilda, Melbourne. Collingwood and Melbourne were pretty close to full strength so very good wins. Yes GWS was round 3 that's right. Maybe we had a lot of luck and were lucky to finish 5th. I don't know, we were playing well, we were playing with a different structure and ball movement system in the second half of the season. I'm not taking a great deal of notice about our GWS smashing. They became a very good side and we brought a heap of players back from long layoffs. Think we didn't turn up that game.

Next season will be a true test of where we are really at. I think a lot of sides are changing gear towards a more fast paced game and fast pace team makeup. There is a good chance Collingwood, Brisbane, GWS and maybe Port Adelaide remain strong. There is a good chance St Kilda, Adelaide, Sydney and the Gold Coast make major leaps forward. Could be a few others teams do the same but we will see.

I think we have a great list. We are just lacking the finishing touches to it such as better pace, two way run and rotation at half back and more pace and agility in our onball group as well as a really good forward mid.

Pittonett getting smashed against Brisbane is also a worry. We can't get into finals and have that happen.

I didn't think the finals games were a step up, I think that was all in our heads. Melbourne were without Brayshaw, they were weaker. Sydney were just an average side who hadn't beaten anyone of note and snuck into finals. There was nothing special about either of those teams on the night. Yet they smashed us in general play, fortunately they both had some of the worst kicking for goal efforts I have seen.

We went into finals carrying Cincotta who looked sore and was no longer running both ways. Walsh took a few games to get going but hit full tilt by the Melbourne game. Cerra never came good, he came back in terribly shape and could not run out games. We let Saad as the only rebounding defender until the Brisbane where we brought Boyd back after leaving him out for a few months. We dropped an fit and in form Dow and Fisher. We dropped Owies and Cuningham, One of our better forwards and one of our better mids and the half backs they would have been playing on cut us up.

I agree nearly with all that but who in the back half of the season played better then Sydney or Melbourne did in the finals?
Maybe Melbourne in the second last round but a simple touch of the footy call could’ve possibly changed that result.
Personally I don’t think we were any better or worse from finals compared to any run in the season we had, just opposition changed. I also think we were slowly worked out and teams broke down our ability to move the ball. Our last six games of the year we won 4 games by a goal or under and had two losses.

Personally I think Brisbane are just too good for us, they have too many weapons and were easily able to cover ours.
Like every single side in the AFL we will be looking for speed and good ball use but we still lost that Brisbane game at the stoppages. It’s about the only time we got flogged at stoppages in the second half of the season. We were beaten at our own game. I could be wrong but I think the only time we lost stoppages since the start of our winning streak were, GWS, Melbourne in finals in a game we probably shouldn’t have won and the the one smashing in at stoppages was against Brisbane.
I think we just ran into the best side and they were too good for us.

Took Geelong 8 years putting together the first flag team of their successful period. And that was with all their free agents, F/Ss & Wells weaving his magic.

We weren't lucky, we strung together some good wins in H&A and finals. WE made our luck despite losing some of our best players to injury and suspension, and our own constant search for the right combination of players who bring contest, defence, run and skill, and roles for them to do well in.

Is anybody else concerned about our key position depth?. Way I see it we are very thin, particularly forward.
Yes, at both ends…

KPD - I’d like one to develop under Weitering, for a few years… We still have Young and Big Durdin to plug and play…

KPF - wouldn’t mind a ready to go cover for our KPF, whilst Lemmey & O’Keeffe develop… with JSOS and Harry injured this year we can’t continue to expect Charlie to perform against 4 vs 1.

Can't say I know anything more than any other punter, but, think the magic number is 6-8 players off the list. Which means 3-5 new players via trade/draft.

Retire: Ed C, Plow (confirmed).
Delist: Honey, Philp, S Durdin (uncontracted)
Trade: Dow (uncontracted), Fisher (contracted), Young (contracted), LOB (contracted).

That's 9 names. My best guess is we lose 7 of these. If trades can't be found for LOB and Young, we keep them. We keep Durdin if Young goes. Philp a chance to re-rookie.

Cuningham and Marchbank are also currently uncontracted, but prob get 1 year deals each (or 2 years with a games clause on the 2nd year).

So assuming that’s how it’s going to play out, with Philp re-rookied

How many spots do we have left - main list and rookie list? I’m getting lost with the additional Irish players and rookies that we must move on to the main list for 2024.
I.e. what are we going to the trade & draft period with?

Philp aside, the changes suggested leave us with two too many rookies and five vacancies on the main list.

To retain the rest we would need to promote two rookies. As rules stand Boyd and Mirkov must be elevated.

Leaves three spots to draft or trade in. Does not leave room for Philp, or anyone else, on rookie list.

Simples

Got it, so if we want to re-rookie Philp then one of Mirkov, Young or LOB needs to go?

Also, if we were to trade in EHollands - then we need one of the above three to go too? Minimum 3 draft requirement?

Would love Boyd to be our replacement "burst out of stoppages" midfield replacement for someone currently on our list who in all likelihood won't be there next year.
I suspect he would get lost at stoppages. Just because he has the burst of speed doesn't mean he has the body or football intelligence to play at CB

The more I think of it the more I'd like him on the wing with the overlapping run and bullet passes into the forward line

The only issue is I'm not sure on how big his tank is to be able to sustain a full game on the wing

I think Mirkov is the obvious one. I can't see him making it at AFL level.

His tap work is great at VFL but against bigger body opponents he will be pushed aside. He also has no impact around the ground and we are already carrying one of those in Pittonet who at least is a brute at the CB

It will be an interesting one around Philip considering we purposely traded higher to get him before Richmond but he has yet to do anything when he isn't injured

He just may be one who's body can't hack it AFL level which is unfortunate

Would love to see Jsos play backline, you know he would always at a minimum bring the ball to ground. Also a great decision maker coming out of there. But it looks like we have 4 great tall backs back there arm, Weitering, Gov, Marchbank and Kemp. I think this area is well covered by the list. With also Durdin, Arkui and Young.

I would like the focus to be on great medium sized forwards with elite kicks this trade period

Don’t think I’ve ever been excited about a pre-season they usually feel boring and drawn out waiting for round 1…

This year feels different, it’s probably we now have realistic expectations…

It’s going to be fascinating to see where Voss and Co tinker with the game plan and our ball movement… It’ll be great to see, where they (the actual experts) see us needing to improve on field, to take the next step…

Hope the club can re-sign Voss by mid season, so it doesn’t become a headline and a distraction… It’s obvious the supporters, club and players all love Vossy and can see the positive change he’s brought to the club… The media would be obsessed, over a story of Voss being un-contracted after the half way point of the season…

Trade week & the Draft, our old grand final… Is going to be super interesting as well, how Austin and Co handle our tight cap and to see what type of players they see us lacking…
