I agree, but I do think the rules are being misused. The opponents often doesnt watch the ball, and just cuts his run. The leaping ruckman is being held off the ball.
Agree with what you are saying and has been happening all year so why haven't we addressed it either through the umpires or tactically?

I’d suggest re-reading what I actually said.

My point was that when McGovern was moved forward, he didn’t look beyond Curnow as a target. That specific “incident” was just one example of his forward-half decision-making—he didn’t lift his head to assess options, he just threw it on the boot toward Charlie.

So the question remains: do we take the dump kick to Curnow every time, hoping he pulls down a mark, or do we start identifying and hitting the open player?

Isn’t poor forward entry a constant complaint in every game thread? It’s a recurring issue.

Your argument seems to be that because Curnow marked it on that occasion, McGovern’s decision was justified and he should continue as a forward. My counter is that we should be making the smarter play—hitting the free player—which gives us a higher chance of scoring rather than risking a rebound the other way.

Personally, I’ve seen enough of McGovern as a forward to last a lifetime. History shows it hasn’t worked. He found his best form as a defender, and I genuinely believe if he stays forward for the rest of the season, we’ll be worse off because of it.
The problem to the counter argument of this is, that by using the open player, next time Curnow might only have 2 opponents, instead of 3, to contend with.
If a player works hard enough to be open, they should be rewarded. Otherwise you get to where we are, where what is the point of trying to create space? Run and create space and be ignored because they are going to kick to a 3 on 1.

Getting a little sick of the whole "didn't stand up in those big moments" rinse and repeat BS.
He has nothing more insightful to offer the press, or the group.
More "If Plan A doesn't work, Plan B is to do Plan A better" type rubbish.

I don't believe he's wrong though. Most if not all coaches will toe a middle of the road line and i've stopped watching post match because as you say there's never any meaningful insight.

Him and us have been waiting far too long for the "team to stand up when they need to". Given he's not going to fall on his sword in public and say the list isn't good enough I'm not sure what else he can say to the media. The same old questions are gonna get the same old answers until something changes and so far nothing changes with this team.

To be fair we did lose because we absolutely blew key moments - Weitering dropping an uncontested mark to allow them to score against the flow early, nobody able to hold up in the final 22 seconds of the 3rd to allow us to take some real momentum into the last, Weitering again moving like treacle unable to stand up in the tackle and either rush a behind or find a team mate to allow another easy goal, allowing a mark on the behind post to give them another goal - missing set shot from close to the corridor while they were hitting snaps from outside the boundary.

We constantly make fundamental errors that either allow the oppostion to stay in it when we are on top or blow us away when they are.

We also had a 12-15 min period in Q3 where we dominated. 6 consecutive shots at goal for a return of 1 goal 5 points.

Before he inevitably snaps in half, you could do worse than using Orazio off HB.
Was very effective offensively in short periods for us back there.
Side effects may include conceding 20 goals.
Worth a crack though

I'd like someone who can a) make the correct decision then b) execute the appropriate skill to the best placed player in our forward line. Can he do that?

So I'm aligned with the perspective that Wright has runs on the board with regards to footy operations - but that begs the question.....why have we appointed him as CEO?

Reel off the names of the best CEOs in the industry. How many of them have come from a football management background vs business management background.

The last big blow up we had as a club required a new president to step in because the CEO was interfering in the football side of the business. Have we learned nothing from that external review/report - or do we just throw the reports in the bin once delivered?
Yeah I agree to some extent. My initial thoughts in regards to his appointment were the same as yours. Is he going to make a good CEO given no obvious prior business experience in this type of role.

Too late now though. He's been appointed and we're going to find out how well he's going to go.

Given his experiences with Craig Kelly, I'd like to think he wouldn't be a micro manager in regards to footy ops. Rather be a go to, to bounce ideas off or someone we can lean on heavily for direction, if we have to.

I hope his appointment is a tremendous success and he's a part of our long awaited return to being a successful football club for a sustained period of time.

I'm placing a bit of faith in Graham Wright. He would be the Carlton CEO with the most playing and footy ops experience that we've ever had except Ian Collins - not sure about his footy ops experience. Regardless, Wright has massive experience in list management and talent ID so I'm hoping he can have a direct influence in these areas. We still need to improve big time in relation to development coaching so I'm hoping he has some ideas about who are the best in the business.
Waiting for that everlasting saviour that never arrives.

Not sure anyone follows or has seen Jeff White's "First use", but this focuses on what we all see on a weekly basis and why teams attack out of our forward half. We are so predictable

What are our coaches doing all week?

Not too sure, but they obviously are watching a different game version to what most of us basic mugs are seeing on a weekly basis. Take the predictability out of our I50's and we would like a totally different side.

Interesting to see how many of those involve H Saad and Docherty making bad decisions.

We aren't winning games of football with Saad, McGovern and Docherty in the backline. All of them are horrible defenders. Just too easy to go through their man and it leaves Weitering outnumbered consistently. Same goes for Williams when he's back there.

Can't have 3 at once. Need at least one small defence first player.

Also to a lesser extent Caroll because he is so young and inexperienced. He will improve defensively. The others? Doubt it. Best we can hope for is to hide them and to get more out of them going forward than we cop the other way.

“Not picking on anyone “ “not picking on anyone”….dude, call it out!
Serial offenders Doc and Saad, they’re both part of a massive problem imo. Cooked.

Yes some of this analysis is legitimate but hardly groundbreaking - the bombing into F50! Who would have thought?
But he picks and chooses, fumbles and bumbles otherwise. Overrated.

Great post.
How about we use some these ( Saad and McGovern ) for trade? Surely after we payed a first rounder for both we can try for a 3rd rounder back. :p Then we can package 3rds into a 2nd.
Oh the pain, the pain of our trading….

We paid a first rounder for McGovern? Good grief!

I feel that is why it makes such a big difference when Jack is back there, he adds a sense of calmness and stability with Weiters and looks for the best passage out of defence. It also calms the running half backs.

Cowan is a good lock down defender and tough as well as Newman, take them out and we have too many guys as intercept defenders. Haynes has improved during the season, Saad is consistent, but the opposition have worked out to push him onto his right side. Doc will give his all but is losing speed but has improved with more game time and touch as he has spent a long time out. McGovern may as well be FIFO, 1 week on and 3 off, has been the biggest disappointment, imo since coming to our club, capable of brilliance but rarely delivers.

not exactly, we traded the non draft rights for a state league player (Shane McAdam) and 26 + 28 and an f5. Adelaide traded the two picks + 40 + f3 to sydney for 13, a pick they wasted on Ned McHenry

Sydney used the 40 on McInerney and then on traded the two seconds, the f3 bnecame Jake Riccardi

It was also in a time where we struggled to attract anyone to the club.

We swapped two seconds for a first. end of story. Fmd

Carlton gains McGovern and a future third-round selection from Adelaide, while Sydney receives selections No. 26 and 28 from the Blues as well as No. 40 from the Crows.
