Hmmm maybe, I certainly didn't see Gov on the field again but I was watching on TV, maybe someone who was at the game can clarify.

I was right near the race when the team ran off. He high-fived us as he ran along the boundary and seemed in good spirits. Certainly wasn’t any noticeable limp or ice.

This is an underrated win. Sure Essendon missed some early shots but we were 32 points up at half time. Ok they had a lot of play in the third quarter but a lot of their inside 50 entries were very average. We flicked the switch at the start of the last. Our structures were great all night. Our forward line was very open and the forwards worked together which contributed to our efficiency up forward. Our role players were again great. Cripps and Walsh didnt do much. We are building towards the second half of the season to have a real crack at this.

I feel like we will have to keep improving a fair bit from tonight’s performance if we are going to get close to say Sydney. Bombers won on expected scoring comfortably and that for me is a decent indicator for how the game was played.

TDK has been our best player over the past 3 weeks.

Fascinating to see what they do with Pitto next round.

Does Cerra come straight back to replace Carroll?

Any other changes are probably unlikely unless there was an injury.

Finishing top 2 is absolutely critical... avoids that trip to Sydney.

With the GF played in Melbourne I'd back us to beat them on the G. Finishing 3rd or 4th (or lower) means you'll likely have to beat them up there to make the grand final which is almost impossible. The way they play that smaller SCG ground + home crowd makes it a tough road trip.

They have hardly had a single injury to this point. Hoping their luck runs out about round 20.

Have no doubt our ridiculous fixture of gruelling matches is a factor in this. It was very noticeable from the 3rd qtr onwards we were on our haunches behind the play often.

The last 3 weeks we've produced bursts of football when required to win the game. That's good enough at this point.

* were nowhere near us all night. Never in doubt!

Thought we were lucky to get the 50m penalty for * player kicking it wide of Carlton recipient.

Particularly when * didn't get a 50 when we did the exact same thing later on in the game.
Umps have a weird mix at the moment - paying 50s for almost nothing, not paying clear free kicks - holding, in the back, holding the ball - does my head in watching umps ruin these games.

It was a bit of an arm wrestle in the 3rd, we couldn’t clear our backline and they could not kick goals because of our tackling pressure and structure.

Other than that we really controlled the game and kept them at bay.

Their key metric is time in possession and while they had plenty of the ball, mostly it was out wide and very stilted chains of play which is not how they like it.

We showed them that despite being well below our best there is a gulf in class.

It was a big lead up to the game for us and maybe we had played the game mentally a few times before the bounce. It was a monkey on the back and now we have put them away we can reset for the second half of the season.

Walsh, Crippa, Saad, H, and acres all seemed a bit flat/tense and need some R and R.

The whole team went the thug route to shake us up... especially in the third. And the umpires protected them.

** * and ** the AFL as well!
I could be wearing my blue coloured glasses but ever since we won the Freo game, with what many thought was the rub of the green from the umpires, just seems that more of those 50/50 decisions are paid to our opposition than us.

I think what is majorly needed is consistency. 4 umpires is stupid.

Technology and TV have gotten so good now I think two umpires with the whistle permanently in their mouths or some sort of hand held button whistle in their hands, each with their own half with an ear piece and an umpire who is watching on screen sees the frees on and around the ball and acts as the primary umpire and tells the umpires on field to blow the whistle and the decision why.

Field umps call off the ball incidents.

Now that would be consistency! But the AFL hierarchy will never see how it could work cause they are idiots!

Essendon are a good team they played well they got their game going in the third quarter.
But for the majority of the game we shut their game down.
But I get what your saying they kicked a lot of points from deep entry’s
They won the ball ( very unlike us ) through the middle & stoppages - felt like they had better ground cover.

I think this came from the heavy tags on both sides - Cincotta on Merrett worked, but at what cost.

Essendon tagged Cripps & Walsh effectively. Made the game feel like it was on their terms.

Not entirely satisfying!

Our forward efficiency is epic A love to see us get it in more - Cerra will help.

Just heard on the news that Essendon 'blew their game last night due to wayward kicking'.....no mention of Carlton winning :tearsofjoy:

Anyone else feel a little weird about this game?
We won and controlled a lot of the match but also feel a little more polished from essendon could've made it a different result.
Still - up the baggers!!

This was basically us in the Geelong and Adelaide games though; we kicked 2.8 vs Geelong and the Adelaide game should have been iced midway through the fourth quarter.

If you couldn’t convert when required, you played bad football.
