Gov looked fine after the game as did H.

Hopefully H is a just a stinger.

Not so sure about Gov. Looked like he was pointing out an injury to his leg with the trainer on the boundary line and then never came back on in the forth quarter.

Can’t be sure but looked like he was pointing to his quad/hammy.

I feel like we will have to keep improving a fair bit from tonight’s performance if we are going to get close to say Sydney. Bombers won on expected scoring comfortably and that for me is a decent indicator for how the game was played.

Coulda, woulda, shoulda. Didn’t.

Yeah,nah.

Smashed them in 3 of the four quarters.

Would love to know from the coaches if we shut down in the third. Rucking Cripps & Kennedy was a little perplexing.
Stopped playing our way for most of the third, only time we didn’t look dominant in the game.

Something that hasn’t really been highlighted, and the most pleasing thing from my perspective, is we blunted every “weapon” they had that was going to give them a chance of winning the game.

Merrett, Stringer, Langford, Wright, Ridley were all beaten.

That’s good coaching and excellent execution.

The only time that got untidy was Martin getting off the chain in the third. Was acknowledged in the 4th and Cowan did an excellent job extinguishing that threat.

Came out in the fourth and smashed them. Same as last week so it doesn’t look like it’s a fluke.

We look legitimate. Get a couple back hopefully after the bye and set ourselves up for a real crack. Loving it.

Go baggers.

He was moving well, nothing iced, happy as Larry after the game.

Hoping it is something minor - our bye giving a chance to recoup.

Looks like a few need a freshen up - Batman & Robin especially.

I think it was the around the start of the 4th - TDK came out firing out of the centre square which resulted in a mark/goal.

I think he got us going in the last, followed up by the likes of Elijah, Hewett Kennedy etc

Cripps and Walsh were well held I thought and the new rules sort of took away their usual dominance - specially Cripps.

We played well, we kicked well. Thought Essendon had a massive chance to come back and get in the game but they were inaccurate.

Really like some of the changes. Cincotta playing half forward and playing on the +1 style attacking defenders is working a treat.

Williams is a good all round footballer wherever he plays and he adds a lot to the forward line.

E Hollands offers a lot in the middle, covers the ground well, uses it well. He's definitely a mid who can go forward and not the other way around IMO. Playing Cerra's role with forward minutes.

The backline was pretty good. Still think there is a spot for a CHB in there. But like what we are doing. Kemp did some really good things, had some moments he could not prevent and that's ok. Weitering is really out of form and has been all year. He's like to hold those marks. McGovern and Saad really good. Newman just such a smart player. Cowan getting better. Boyd was good as well.

O Hollands getting better, putting his body into the contest a lot better. Acres always good. Cripps solid but Hewett was really good tonight. Kennedy really solid.

McKay v MaKay. I think Ben probably would be happy with his game, kept Harry quiet up forward. Harry going into the ruck is a really good thing for us.

Owies was really good early but faded out.

Charlie is out of form but still a colman medal leader so goes to show that even at 85% he's still a gun.

Carroll couldn't get into the game, thought he was pretty ordinary. Durdin came on and made an immediate impact. I'd love to see Durdin get back to becoming the player he looked like he would become back in 2022.

We probably looked a little slow up front at times, the rebounded really strongly at times but gee did our midfield and defense do a great job at holding them up.

DeKoning again was again the player of the match for mine. Didn't dominate the hitouts, far from it but he nullified their rucks and around the ground he was electric. Gives us an extra rover in there. Has to play sole ruck, it's one of our biggest weapons.

We have done well to form a mini comeback in the last month to get to second place.

Next few weeks there is some talent to come in, it will be difficult to do that with plenty in form. Martin, Motlop and Cerra being the main ones.

Umps have a weird mix at the moment - paying 50s for almost nothing, not paying clear free kicks - holding, in the back, holding the ball - does my head in watching umps ruin these games.
Said it last week, but 4 different mindsets and interpretations is making decisions worse. AFL is best to go back to 2 umpires, that way the cream of the crop are umpiring and you only have 2 different interpretations. How the heck do you have 4 sets of eyes during a game trying to co-ordinate whose officiating what. 2 umps, 1 take each half for the game and make decisions for their half, without umpire 100m away making a decision.

You may lose off the ball incidents being pinged but for those the umpire in the other half can keep an eye out, or since everything is filmed just crack down hard on fines/suspensions for off the ball unsportsman behaviors to eradicate them.

It’s a tough one.

Less eyes might become frustrating with holds, pushes, high contact not seen from the wrong side of a contest.

It just seems to me like they’ve “corrected” holding the ball, but stopped paying incorrect disposal.

How many times do we see players being tackled handing the ball to ground - play on no opportunity!

It’s daft.

Tackled holding the ball requires prior yes, but they have to dispose of the ball legally also - seem not to be paying these.

My Collingwood loving neighbour popped his head over the fence yesterday Home Improvement style and said “man I hate Essendon I hope you belt them”.

It’s not the first conversation I’ve had with Collingwood supporters where we have mutual football hate for those scumbags.

Went out the back for a morning cup of joe in the crisp air and he said “that would have felt great”.

For that one moment , there was a known kinship nod between rivals at the demise of the mutually despised one.

TDK is worth every penny.
It’s great to see Z Williams find a new spark in his career and the last month.
Fogarty how can you not love that guy. So important in the forward half.

Good summation, and definitely need to figure out how to get Weiters and Charlie back into form. Weiters knows his not in great form so is just focusing a lot on his man (and doing it well) but we need Weiters to come back out of his shell.

With Charlie at least we saw him last night starting to read the play better and moving and being more aware of players around him (except when he burnt Cripps, but I think heat of the moment got to him and he wanted to nail that goal to rev himself and the crowd up as per norm). He did stop short on going hard on a couple of opportunities which makes me wonder still if he is carrying something significant and masking it well (he isn't running at great speed this year and is more content on wrestling).

We just need to get Cripps, Walsh, Cerra, Charlie, Weiters in cracking form by the end of the year. Need Saad, McGov, TDK, Williams, Fog, Acres to all remain fit (and most of the 22 who played yesterday). In a few weeks we have a few others starting to get back from injury.

What's important is holding on to top 4, as that will fuel fringe players to keep pushing, working hard and take chances and retain spots and give opportunity to rest a player here or there knowing someone hungry is waiting to dig in.

I don’t have a crystal ball but Pittonet is playing ressies for awhile. Undefeated when TDK rucks solo.

I only see like for like swaps from here.

Cerra > Kennedy
Martin > Durdin
Cottrell > Carroll

Motlop TBD.
Cerra for Hewitt; Hewitt, for all that he had a good game last night, is a risk when Cripps isn't firing because he's slower by foot. Cerra goes to Hewitt's role and Kennedy continues on around the ball. Cotts for Carrol is just money for jam, but...

I don't think Jack Martin is an automatic inclusion, not while Williams is tearing it up in his role. The pressure then goes onto someone like Fog or Owies, and honestly what Martin provides is closer to Owies role than it is Fogs. And Fog has made himself near impossible to drop, from a TOG perspective and tackles inside forward 50 per game. It's him, Boyd, Cinc, Hollands (both of them) and Williams playing a role and making it work that got us over the line yesterday.

Fog's goal was all about Williams halving two contests consecutively and getting it out to him once clear.

Just make sure you poison the neighbours roses when you get a chance.

Sounds like he’s getting cocky.

Yes agree, make this bs "he made an attempt" to not be grey. Did it hit the boot, or fist make contact on handpass? No, free kick for incorrect disposal. But I fear the correction for holding the ball is making it a problem as players are clearly panicking when around a scrum of players and are tentative to take the ball, or not hit someone high, tackle correctly etc. We have a contact sport where players in congestion have to calculate so many variables and the playmaker is at just as much risk of giving away a free kick as anyone.

Don't know the solution, could it be maintain positions somewhat? 2 players minimum in each third of the ground? during a ball up only ruckman and 2 midfielders can be in a protected zone to contest?

I do wonder how much the AFL spends in umpiring analysis and rule changes beyond just gut feel and media and public input.

TDK has been our best player over the past 3 weeks.

Fascinating to see what they do with Pitto next round.

Does Cerra come straight back to replace Carroll?

Any other changes are probably unlikely unless there was an injury.

Pittonet has to stay in the VFL. Nothing against him but he can't play forward and DeKoning has become such a point of difference for us. Need him in the midfield as much as possible.

Cerra's first game back has always been poor. It would be tempting to bring him back via the VFL but he's too good for that and that may not work.

I think there is a good chance we see Cerra for Carroll and Motlop could possibly come in as the sub, although I think we are trying to push his fitness so perhaps not.

Cottrell could be back but I don't think he comes straight back either.

Jack Martin is a possibility as well.

A lot has changed since these guys have been out. Cincotta has done very well in Cottrell's role on the half forward flank. Williams has gone forward and done very well so Martin and Motlop have to work around that. DeKoning has gone from mediocre third tall forward to premier ruckman. E Hollands has come in and done very well in the midfield so Cerra has to work around that. Even Marchbank has had a few games in the VFL in a row so could be considered although his form is not that good.

We might not see everyone come back immediately either.

My guess is that Cerra replaces Carroll and Martin or Motlop replaces Durdin as the sub. Martin could replace Owies but he may have to come back via the VFL.

A healthy list with talent in the VFL would be good to see.

It’s always a bit different when watching on TV, but TDK seemed far and away the absolute dominant player on the ground.

Cannot wait to see what a fit and firing Cerra and Cottrell bring to the running game.

Ollie Hollands has hit his strides the past month. Still not getting big numbers but his composure and decision making are much improved. The work-rate was never in question.

Reckon this has been Voss’s best month as a coach with us - he’s tried new things, worked on clear deficiencies and created a few new options across the ground. We were bemoaning our inside 50s earlier this year; last night we won on pure efficiency.
