An F1 driver isnt a mechanical, aerodynamic or electrical engineer though.

All of whom play important roles on a race weekend.

Most golfers know the courses they play like the backs of their hands, particularly on a professional level.

I know that, but basically you're saying it comes down to a subjective analysis of the skills of the two roles, not their actual function.

An F1 driver could learn to do the pit work. A golfer could do tactical analysis on the course. The F1 driver will likely have a much harder time learning the mechanical work.

Both operate as a team with a highly individual component, and yet broadly most people (including me) class motorsport as a team sport and golf as an individual sport.

I think it's much closer than those labels would suggest

You have to be on the field of battle - participating - to be in the team.

Nicks isn't in the team for instance, even though the coach is obviously important.

It's why they have to have a separate award for the manufacturers, because they're not in the team.

Neil & Buzz walked on the moon. Not those NASA guys
Your team is required to be there while the battle is on, you can’t get thru the contest without your team they are there to help, aahhh I think it’s a team sport that’s all that matters

But the mechanics do not sub out for any driving. They are performing a different role that is crucial to the success of the team

Caddies also perform a different role to the golfer and do a lot more than just carry clubs around. They're also important to the success of the team.

In both cases I don't think anyone believes the pit crew / caddy is anywhere near as important as the driver / golfer in terms of overall performance
As I said before Motorsport is all about timing and the driver stops and it’s all on the mechanics.
Not the same as a caddy, which is about scoring, the caddy doesn’t change the score.

It's widely believed Red Bull didn't have the best / fastest car last year. (They finished 3rd in constructor's championship).

Verstappen ran away with the driver's championship.
They did for the first 1/3 then it went away.
However they didn’t win the teams championship due to only having 1 good driver competing.

This is true, its why many expect him to have a much tougher time of it this year. Its also worth noting that Perez was so bad he no longer has a drive in the sport.

I dont think the car was as bad as the constructors title made it look.

Why do you keep doubling down, it's embarrassing.

Last year Mclaren won the Manufacturers Championship in F1. That's the champion TEAM Red Bull Racing won the Drivers AND TEAMS championship.

But yeah not a team sport.
McLaren has someone holding a spanner, and Nadal has someone to rub his hamstrings.

Everything in human existence takes support to happen.

Why do you keep squawking about this? I'm obviously mostly just messing around. Why are you so indignant?

Usually your posts are spot on and I really disagree with you and no I'm not just sucking up to a mod.

But question - on the "field of battle" - who changes the tyres in the pits? The driver?

Nothing further your honour

Especially when the timing of a pit stop and the speed of the pit stop can have a significant impact on the race, and who manages when those happen? It isn't the driver.

Ah no, not quite.

When Max Verstappen comes into the pits he doesn't jack the car and change his own tyres. He doesn't change his gearbox after practice.

The fact is, Max doesn't race on the weekend without his team. He can even turn his own car on without them.
What professional sportsperson can play their sport without support staff? Any?

Well, Nadal doesn't have someone to rub his hamstrings because Nadal is retired.;)

That kind of support occurs outside of play, when play is stopped.

The pit is part of the race track, the pit stops, and the actions undertaken by the pit crew occur while the race is ongoing, it is part of the race.

Drivers on the same team coordinate with each other.

It is a team sport.

Look, this has been the most fun we've had here for a while, especially with Cromulant getting so upset.

For what it's worth, I think motorsport requires a team to be successful, but isn't a team sport.

But it's fair enough if you do.

Anything I say on the matter is just filling in time, though. I don't think it's really worth getting upset about what opinion someone posts about it

Im laughing at your lack of basic knowledge, far from upset.

But like your mate Wayne you love a good narrative shift.

Wasn’t the original premise that Motorsport isn’t a team sport?
Ah sorry, I see what you mean

Yes, if one worked the pedals while the other one steered then yes they'd be working as a team

Who mixes the Gatorade? The players?

Got to keep fluids up but the Gatorade guy doesn't get a medal.

He's there to support the team, he's not in the team.

Again, youve missed the point.

During a race the team are actively involved in how that race is going for the driver. I get you dont watch much motorsport, but to compare them with the drinks person is just being deliberately silly

Malcolm Blight was actively involved in the match but he wasn't in the team

You seem to regard "off field support staff" as some sort of put down? It's no shame to be part of the crucial support crew for an individual sport.

The arena is empty except for one man
Still driving and striving as fast as he can
The sun has gone down and the moon has come up
And long ago somebody left with the cup
But he's driving and striving and hugging the turns
And thinking of someone for whom he still burns

He's going the distance

Not we're going the distance.

Not sure how you can say it’s not a team sport when one driver hops out and hands the car to the next driver?

How is a mechanic doing a pit stop off field though?
The time doesn’t stop before they go into the pits.
