Either way Richmond killed it
Remember when we got 4 picks inside 30 or whatever it was. And we were all

Turbo charged rebuild
Compare to us. How many players did we trade out when we commenced our rebuild? The club certainly didn't entertain trading out guys like Laird or Smith who would've fetched a decent price at the time.

Proof will be in the pudding but I back Richmond's track record over ours

Kane is a poor human.
Is he though?
Probably done more for charity than anyone on here.
Might have got this wrong but so did everyone else on here that laughed at a player bailing on a club.

they will be VERY likely be dead bottom next 3 years now though. need to factor that in and potential of players wanting out as they wont be in contention for another 5-6 years now

could actually be the worst result of any team since the new teams came in ie winning 1 or 2 games maximum and a horrendous % of 40 ish

At least a few of their top draft picks will have an immediate impact.

The results you're talking about are expansion era stuff and not even GWS was that bad. Richmond's squad is better than first year GWS.

2011 Gold Coast had an average experience of 23 games per player (lol) and still won 3 games with a percentage of 56%. GWS similar experience for 2 wins and 45% in their first year

Should we offer Pick 4 for Richmond's F1 and hope that gets us Dyson Sharp?
Well you know it’s about right because you’ve got people saying we shouldn’t and others saying Richmond wouldn’t.

Personally don’t think it’s in either teams interests as we need to maximize years with Dawson and Rankine and Richmond don’t want all their eggs in the one draft basket.

Or they could do a North and struggle to get out of the bottom 4 for years after losing all your senior stars at once. Richmond don't have a great history of getting the first rebuild right.
Exactly this. Who is even left to guide all of these kids, set training standards, keep them going when they're winning 1 out of every 10 games.

I'm confused. And yes its partly a smartarse response but are you saying players want out when teams perform poorly?

Because apparently our kulcha has allowed us to not only keep players but retain them on loooooong contracts

Looking back on the last five years, I highly doubt current performance is a big player in deciding on if a player wants to leave until they hit free agency.

Seems like when a young player leaves, it's either for more money or circumstance.

We got rid of five senior players when we commenced in 2019 to trades. Betts, Jacobs, Jenkins, Keath and Greenwood. Two of them were salary dumps. We also had Ellis-Yolman walk via Free Agency. Though, it's also worth noting that contexually, this comes off the back of us imploding in 2019, and there is definitely benefits to having a team bleed out instead of implode. We uhh, also retired Douglas without telling him which also deserves to be mentioned due to PR not being a strength.

If you're comparing us to Richmond, this is probably trade period two of their rebuild. Their first big draft pick, their first horrific year (in a while). At this point, we tried to get pick 2 from FA from Crouch. Atkins elected to take free agency and we traded out Hartigan. We also had Gibbs retire and spend a lot of this period cutting depth, think Gallucci, Poholke, Taylor, Knight etc.

We didn't trade Laird/Smith because you do still need some experienced players to be guides in a rebuild, and we had more pressing needs to get rid of. We did reach the point in 2022 and 2023 where we had the lowest number of 100 gamers in the AFL. We're only starting to normalise in that facet now, seeing we're now up to the 13th most experienced list.

Hard to say what will happen to Richmond in the future, and really depends on Yze for the short term. I'm not backing them, but that's because once you enter the rebuild forest, it's very easy to get lost. Losing Bolton is a disaster though, no matter what picks they get.
