With the other thread reaching 200 pages I thought I'd begin a new thread with the first post containing information of the 10 players that seem to be most in the minds of posters when it comes to our 2 R1 picks (currently 2 & 3) and also run a poll to get an idea of who the 2 most popular players are among supporters as the U18s start preparing for their finals campaigns and also the upcoming combine.

A talented player, Duursma has put his versatility on show in a range of roles this year. He has played a significant portion of the season as a rebounding defender, including in the two AFL Academy games against VFL opponents in April and through his national championships campaign with Vic Country. But some of his best football has come when he has played through the midfield, where he can be a damaging centre-forward player. Duursma was thrown into the midfield for Vic Country’s last match of the championships against Vic Metro and delivered a best-on-ground performance with 27 disposals and a goal, on his way to collecting the side’s MVP award. He has also had some big games playing as a midfielder-forward for Gippsland in the Coates Talent League, including a 31-disposal, seven-clearance and one-goal game against Sandringham in round 7. Duursma has got a few tricks, is clever around clearances, brings breakaway pace from the contest, can hit a dart pass by foot and gets one-two’s as a running link-up player. He reads the play well when behind the ball and can take a quality overhead mark whether in defence or rotating forward. Duursma has also been exposed to VFL football with Casey this year, logging 17 disposals from halfback in a round 18 debut. He is the youngest brother of Xavier (Essendon), Zane (North Melbourne) and Yasmin (Carlton AFLW).
2025 National Champs 129 ranking points, 24.3 disposals, 5.3 marks, 4.5 intercept possessions, 2 clearances, 3.3 tackles, 4.3 score involvements, 0.3 goals (4 games)

A gun inside midfielder, Sharp has been arguably the best-performed underage player in the country over the past two years. He played all four games for South Australia as a bottom-age player at last year’s under-18 national championships and went on to captain the side to victory as a top-age player at this year’s tournament, being named the All-Australian captain and winning the Larke Medal in the process. Long known as a big-bodied inside player, Sharp has also shown an improved outside game this year. He has been typically strong around the contest and has put his quick hands on display in tight, but he has also been able to show good decision making and neat ball use when in space, driving his side forward and finding targets inside-50. Sharp has also been able to impact during his own rotations forward, providing a marking target and applying hot tackling pressure on his opponents. Described as “ready-made” for the next level, he has featured at senior level for Central District this year and logged 15 disposals (12 contested possessions), five clearances and six tackles in a round 13 game against Norwood.
2025 National Champs 155 ranking points, 27 disposals, 11.3 contested possessions, 6 clearances, 6.5 inside-50s, 5 tackles, 7.5 score involvements, 1.3 goals (4 games)

A junior basketball ace, Duff-Tytler has had plenty of ‘wow’ moments on the football field this year as he has done things most other players his size simply can’t do. As a ruckman, he provides good tap work, has a big leap, follows up to become like an extra midfielder around contest and has the athleticism to get around the ground and support his defence or push forward and hit the scoreboard. There have been a couple of instances this year where Duff-Tytler has burst forward with the footy from centre bounce and kicked remarkable goals on the run from 50m. During the national championships with Vic Metro he had some good stints in the ruck but also excited with some of his work as a forward, including his ability to take a contested mark in the air and slot goals from different angles. The Calder Cannons product – who looks up to Fremantle’s Luke Jackson – was named at half-forward in the under-18 All-Australian squad.
2025 National Champs 93 ranking points, 14.5 disposals, 4 marks, 14 hitouts, 1.8 clearances, 2.5 tackles, 4.5 score involvements, 0.8 goals, 2.8 tackles (4 games)

Lindsay is a very skilfull playmaker with a kicking weapon who stands up in big games. The Geelong Falcons product's elite kicking was on show in his two medal-winning performances — one as a wingman in the under-17 Futures game last September and the second in defence in the second AFL Academy game against Coburg in April. Lindsay was an All-Australian at the national championships as Vic Country’s captain and designated kicker out of defence, with his ball-use, run and carry and composure standing out. The Newtown & Chilwell prospect has played most of his pathways football as a distributing defender, but he has pushed into the midfield this season with the Geelong Falcons and Geelong Grammar and had a serious impact. He looks up to Errol Gulden, who he draws similarities to with his left boot, and Scott Pendlebury. Lindsay has taken a leaf out of the Collingwood champion’s book with his ultra-dedicated approach – saving up $1400 for a pair of recovery boots.
2025 National Champs 94 ranking points, 22.3 disposals, 76.4 per cent disposal efficiency, 3.8 marks, 3 rebound 50s, 4.8 intercept possessions, 0.5 spoils, 1.0 tackles (4 games)

A tough and fierce competitor who has been likened to former Adelaide champion Rory Sloane, Cumming also brings power, speed and plenty of class. A vice-captain of South Australia at this year’s under-18 national championships, Cumming spent time rotating between onball and forward roles and performed well in both with his enormous workrate and appetite for the contest. He kicked goals in three of his side’s four matches, including two majors in one quarter against Vic Metro. The performances saw him named across half-forward in the under-18 All-Australian side. Cumming had won the SANFL under-18s MVP award as a bottom-age player with North Adelaide last year and was also dominant in the early rounds this season. He has gone on to feature at senior level in the SANFL in the second half of the year and starred with 21 disposals, five clearances and three goals in a round 13 clash against South Adelaide. Cumming is originally from Wentworth in New South Wales but moved to Adelaide for school.
2025 National Champs 89 ranking points, 17 disposals, 1.3 clearances, 3.3 inside-50s, 4.5 score involvements, 1.0 goals, 0.8 score assists, 3.3 tackles (4 games)

A big-bodied midfielder who has been compared to Richmond’s Josh Smillie, Greeves has been a consistent performer throughout his draft year. His strengths are clear to see with his toughness, clean hands and clearance, contested ball and groundball ability. He’s also got good footy smarts and the ability to go forward, take a contested mark and kick a goal. The great nephew of Geelong legend Carji Greeves, he was named Vic Metro’s MVP from the under-18 national championships, while also finishing equal-second in Larke Medal voting and being named onball in the under-18 All-Australian squad. A co-captain of the Eastern Ranges, he also produced some big games in the Coates Talent League earlier in the year and has monstered opponents in school football games with Caulfield Grammar. The knock on Greeves is his transition running ability, which is so important in modern footy. But he knows that and has been constantly working on it.
2025 National Champs 113 ranking points, 25 disposals, 5.3 marks, 11.8 contested possessions, 8 ground ball gets, 4.5 clearances, 2.8 tackles, 4.8 score involvements, 0.8 goals (4 games)

A medium-sized marking forward who is incredibly athletic, Marsh has flourished over the past two seasons and starred for South Australia at this year’s under-18 national championships. Likened to Geelong’s Jeremy Cameron, the lead-up forward has a huge engine and was the quickest player over 2km in the state squad’s testing earlier this year. But his biggest strength might be his marking. Marsh presents well on the lead and gives a strong contest in the air with his ability to take big contested marks overhead. He also has elite footy IQ, uses his speed to work into space and is usually an accurate goalkicker. Marsh was the leading goalkicker at the national championships, booting 12 goals for South Australia to be named in a forward pocket in the All-Australian side. He is the son of former Adelaide and Richmond player Ben Marsh, who was a premiership player with the Crows in 1998. However, Mitch is not eligible to join either club under father-son rules given his dad managed only 55 games at the top level.
2025 National Champs 100 ranking points, 8.5 disposals, 6 marks, 1.3 contested marks, 7.3 score involvements, 3 goals, 1.5 score assists, 1.3 tackles (4 games)

A classy halfback, Farrow has been linked to AFL stars Hayden Young and Jordan Dawson. Like those two players, he is a beautiful kick who went at 86.8 per cent kicking efficiency during his under-18 national championships campaign with Western Australia. Farrow is also a strong-bodied player who can take a nice intercept mark, makes good decisions, is composed under pressure and can provide some run and rebound when he does win possession. He was trialled through the midfield in Western Australia’s first two games, before returning to his natural position in defence and racking up 29 disposals and 803 metres gained in the side’s third game against the Allies. Farrow was named in a back pocket in the under-18 All-Australian team, before returning to West Perth where he has impressed at senior level in the WAFL. In a round 16 loss to East Perth, Farrow racked up 22 disposals, nine marks and six rebound 50s.
2025 National Champs 108 ranking points, 19 disposals, 4.8 marks, 1.8 intercept marks, 4.5 rebound 50s, 3 score involvements, 3.5 tackles (4 games)

A defender whose stocks rose during his national championships campaign for Vic Metro, Taylor stopped plenty of opposition forays forward. He defends well one-on-one, reads the play nicely to get to the right spots and intercept the footy and displayed some desperate defensive actions. A Richmond supporter who looks up to Nathan Broad, Taylor is a task-oriented player. His offensive game is still a work in progress but is improving and he can provide run and carry on the way out when he does win the ball back. Taylor was particularly impressive in Vic Metro’s last two games of the championships, winning 16 disposals, eight marks (two intercept marks) and five spoils in the final match against Vic Country. He has also played some strong football in the Coates Talent League this year, including in a round 7 match where he took on Sydney Swans Academy forward Max King and finished with 24 disposals, 12 marks (four intercepts) and five tackles.
2025 National Champs 84 ranking points, 15 disposals, 4.5 marks, 3.5 rebound 50s, 1.5 intercept marks, 5.8 intercept possessions, 3.5 spoils, 2 tackles (4 games)

19
Sam Grlj

Sam Grlj

Defender, Midfielder
A speedster who can break the lines with his run, Grlj can impact off halfback or through the midfield

A player with excellent speed, power, endurance and a nice step, Grlj has some real AFL traits. He was solid during the under-18 national championships with Vic Metro, without having a breakout game. Grlj spent some time in the midfield but was mostly used across halfback, where he showed he could be an accountable defender and was able to break the lines with his run. The final match of the tournament against Vic Country was Grlj’s best as he gathered 17 disposals, including 12 kicks at 83.3 per cent efficiency. He also showed some clearance-winning ability through the midfield with the Chargers earlier in the year, after being behind the likes of Jagga Smith, Finn O’Sullivan and Tom Gross in the pecking order during his bottom-age season in 2024. Grlj has drawn some comparisons to Geelong’s Max Holmes, particularly given his running power. He made an impressive VFL debut for Richmond in round 19, showing composure and providing some run off halfback as he gathered 18 disposals, six marks and five tackles.
2025 National Champs 73 ranking points, 17 disposals, 2.5 marks, 1.5 rebound 50s, 3 score involvements, 0.3 goals, 1.8 tackles (4 games)

Duursma looks best, but probably gone by our pick.

Sharp is proven, but might be a bit one paced and not be a great fit for our midfield alongside similarly one paced hopper and Taranto. Do we look to the future and get him anyway to pair with smillie, hotton, etc?

CDT has all the upside, huge potential, but perhaps unclear what position he would excel at in the AFL. We'd want a primary ruck after just having drafted 3 key forwards and having a stacked tall defence.

Grlj has a weapon with his pace, and has shown good aggression. Possible Butters type mid.

Bison could be a forward, or a marking wingman. I'm thinking potential to be like a Dan Curtin type.

I'm tipping Dursma to be unavailable. We'll want one of our 2 picks to be a pure mid. Therefore, if CDT is still on the board we take him and Grlj. If CDT is gone, we take Sharp and Bison so the SA boys can move together. I don't think the club has a problem picking high upside players with undefined positions at this stage, they just want to bring the most potential in to the club.

So many concerns with Dursma bloodlines and caving under pressure and expectations, his sibling role models are flakey AF. He’s not that younger Selwood type that scraps and fights. I hope WC take him as I think he’ll be a bust for a first rounder.

I think we need the 2 best midfielders.
Shades of the Mortons?

I can't see Eagles taking both Duursma and CDT - Eagles need a 99.99% guaranteed 'win' as a pure mid with at least one of their picks.

So I see Sharp being a certainty with one of their first 2-picks to help Harley Reid in the Eagles coalface - Yeo is cooked, Kelly is almost cooked, Sheed is retired and there are questions marks on other young mids.

Now whether they partner Sharp with Duursma or CDT is a big question. They do have a lot of developing young talls, many of whom have shown some promising signs....do they 'risk' another one?

I think they will take Duursma and Sharp in that order....

Given our need for a ruck and the fact he's got the most upside, I think we are certain to take CDT with one of our picks, and the 'next best' midfielder with the other.

With no clearcut top selections, I don't mind us taking just whomever the Eagles bypass...puts the pressure on them to get it right.

Way too many people under rating Sharp in this thread

He will be a 200 game player that gets 25+ possessions and 5 tackles a game and can kick goals
Runs defensively and offensively and screams a Mundy , Libba type player that may not be the Elite levels who knows but will be a bloody great player for a long time. I have no issue with taking him with 1 of our picks

Isn’t these stats just like Taranto’s, and god knows he gets criticism on this forum

He doesn't need to 'scrap and fight', he just needs to hold his own when required.

Based on who i think will be available - Lindsay and Grlj.

If Sharp slips past WC we absolutely have to take him. Then one of Lindsay or Grlj.

No to CDT.

Also not against splitting picks into 3 or 4 in the top 15 (or next year), and taking a spread.

With all your points its a certainty that WCE take Sharp pick 1 IMO.
He is a 200 game centre bounce midfielder.
